Interesting.....Let Down was voted their best song on a large fan poll a few years back. I think its amazing.
@samstevenson53288 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree with your take on "Let Down." That song for me is the turning point of the album and still hits me with the same emotional impact that tracks like "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" would. I really love how the song soars with the leading climax of Thom singing "You know where you are" and reprises the chorus once again. That always makes my throat tighten and immerses myself in Thom's shoes and really connects it to my life

I agree with The Tourist being musically disappointing as the closing track to Ok Computer, but consider the lyrics. Not only does it make a reference to the brilliant novel "Fahrenheit 451", but i also believe that this is really the second to last song; the last being Airbag. Let me explain why. The song Airbag is exactly about what the title implies, and the ineffectiveness of airbags, and "The illusion of safety. In reality, airbags don't really work, and they go off at random" -Thom Yorke. Its also about taking life for granted. But like many of the brilliant songs on this record, there is a double meaning. in 1987, Yorke got in a bad accident with his girlfriend. But they both survived, and in that period of time after the crash, he decided that he wouldn't just take his life for granted. This brings me to the song The Tourist. This song has a lot of social commentary about being a consumer and "Tourist-ing" places instead of going deeper to appreciate it. Its a song about how do get more, and faster and the quantity over quality mentality. But I believe that in the chorus, as Yorke sings "Hey man, slow down! | Idiot, slow down!" He is talking to himself. Picture this scenario. Your past self is doing something stupid, such as driving too fast, and you are witnessing the event from a third-eye perspective like an angel on the shoulder, but you cant get through, because, in reality, this whole scenario is in your head. In your memory. You shout to your stupid self who is about to have an accident or make a huge mistake "Idiot, slow down!" You get frustrated, because you cant hear yourself, and the inevitable happens. In the song, this is the little percussive ding of a triangle, which is the very last thing that happens in the whole album. The impact and the crash. And that's it. It ends on a cliffhanger. Except it doesn't. The album picks up at Airbag where the Tourist left off, ya know, when the CD restarts after you've finished, like its on loop and the whole cycle restarts. This in itself, I think, is kind of what the whole album's theme is. Many to most of the songs cover this endless loop of the mundane, technology-driven life, where you make the same mistakes over and over again. It is brilliant how these songs can be biographical, contribute to the dystopian, digital theme of the album, and hold double or triple metaphorical meanings. I find this all super intriguing as you can see, but its all just my interpretation. That being said, I feel like it works out just a little too well to just be a coincidence.

I wish I enjoyed Radiohead, but have never been able to stomach Thom Yorke's vocal style. I would never deny how great an influence they have been on many bands I enjoy though.

I agree, I don't know what it is I don't like about the band though. I think maybe it's just how over dramatic they can be, leaves me kind of feeling weird about it

Personally I have been listening to VIM for at least 4 years[maybe slightly longer]. You both put a lot of profound thought and insight into your reviews and I,for one,really appreciate what you have to say. I do not always agree with your viewpoints or perspectives but will listen and watch as its patently clear you guys do actually know what your talking about. A great idea on your Deep-Dive section,especially,on RADIOHEAD. Because of their brilliance and ineffable style I have had to change the way I would rate albums.I now split a point into 5.For example 5.2,5.4,5.6 and so on. Now my RADIOHEAD SCORES out of Ten. PABLO HONEY=8.8 THE BENDS=10 OK COMPUTER=10 KID A=10 AMNESIAC=9.6 HAIL TO THE THIEF=9.8 IN RAINBOWS=10 THE KING OF LIMBS=9.6 A MOON SHAPED POOL=10 Now without me being biased or one-sided that's my humble opinions on their Discography.They are without doubt the best band,group or collective musicians currentely recording music in the modern era.Their timeless work will stand as tall as the BEATLES,PINK FLOYD or any other forward-thinking creative past and present musicians. That is my personal and humble opinion.I do not expect others to agree with me.In life you have tall people,short people;thin people obese people,night and day.Basically what I am saying its great to have differences as life would be kinda boring if we were all the same.Its all these differences and diversity that makes life as colourful and rainbowic as it is.PEACE +LOVE to all regardless of shape,size,colour,creed or sexuality. PEACE and LOVE to Everyone.

Dudes - seriously. Let Down is as good as anything they've ever done. I find it completely bizarre that you don't dig it. I admit, I didn't 'get' it for a few years at first...then it suddenly hit me and completely blew me away. Listening to that is a spiritual experience. And the tourist? Guys...are you even Radiohead fans?!!

The Bends and Kid A are my all time favorite Radiohead albums but Ok Computer is also brilliant. The only thing that kind of bothers me on this record is the closing track "The Tourist" despite this i love all the others, even Let down that i don't think is a highlight but i'm still able to like it.

I'd personally rank their albums like this: Ok Computer Kid A In Rainbows A Moon Shaped Pool The Bends Amnesiac The King of Limbs Hail to the Thief Pablo Honey It's a testament to them that only Pablo honey is the album of theirs that I dislike. I think OK computer, kid a, in rainbows and a moon shaped pool are their masterpieces, the bends and amnesiac are great, the king of limbs and hail to the thief are good, and Pablo honey is okay.

Let Down a let down? Blasphemy! Certainly not a lesser Subterranean Homesick Alien, totally different mood, IMO. It's intricate, delicate, intense, honest and just.... gorgeous. But to each their own etc. :-) It's interesting, though, that you guys champion Electioneering but give Let Down/The Tourist a thumbs-down. While I do like Electioneering, I always thought it didn't fit well with the rest of the album. If you pluck out Electioneering, the album as a whole just flows better.
