I agree, it seems very sarcastic - could be about love that can do miracles as well as put you down (saving or killing), about your desired importance versus actual insignificance in the world, about the illusion you may influence or outsmart your accidental indifferent fate. But it's just me. It might be a motivation or political song as well (we're on the edge, I don't have time for him etc). The more doubts, the better lyrics:-)

I first heard this song in Six Feet Under when Claire went upstairs to put it on while the family was watching a bucket of clothes burning outside. It was a ‘glorious’ moment. I like how every Radiohead song fits perfect in films and shows. They’re like just made for the life itself, sometimes in the shape of a requiem, and sometimes like a protest. This may not be my favorite Radiohead song but no doubt that there is a very profound meaning behind this song which makes it much more beatiful.

Essence Wolf it’s very rare that someone plays out of tune on purpose, especially Thom Yorke - like most rock singers don’t hit all the right notes all of the time, it’s really common and *not a huge issue imo

His voice just seems "better" back then, less whiny and nasally than now. Bit more beef! Not sure if it was an affectation back then and subsequently dropped in favour of a more real, honest mode of expression or if it's naturally changed over time. Just seems richer here than the later performances I've seen. Always amazing, just this is more faithful to the cd which is the first time I heard it and the version I love. Really nice backing vocals here.
@PandaThiefChannel8 жыл бұрын
Very interestingly and well put. I bet it's a bit of both. I think it's one part having amazing equipment and being able to get away with anything, so less air, where as he clearly is using a lot of air/effort here, and I think it's also what you mention about honest expression, but also that he himself is now less bombastic and more about being "subdued" both in voice and music style. I think he also is wanting to take care of his voice more by not pushing with as much air too. But yeah, that and possibly being out of practice (he probably doesn't sing as much as he used to), all of that...but yeah just my thoughts.
@Bangandthedirtisgone8 жыл бұрын
PandaThiefChannel all interesting points, thank you. Yes, I'd agree their style keeps changing and exploration and subsequently evolution is natural in method of expression. Guess I fell in love with the big booming numbers off the bends and OK Computer and just prefer them to later work. Though I Will and others do it for me in a different way. Regards.

Originally I thought that Amnesiac was just a series of outtakes from the KidA sessions. But I was very wrong. It is a great album that stands up in its own right - a synthesis of the experimentation of Kid A with the great songwriting of OK Computer. In Rainbows is paired right back to the essentials, and stands up because of the great songwriting skills of Radiohead and their ability to turn the simplest song into a journey.
