Well Jay, rain is a recurring metaphor for (usually) one of two things: - a great sadness around the subject - a purification process that cleanses your soul, sins, mistakes, bad stuff ... Somehow they show you the roller coaster of a paranoid man: sadness and depression (in the quiet parts), madness (the voices/noises/chorus), the rage and anger (frenetic guitar parts) and his sudden changes of mood. Is it not beautiful how they put all that into a song? Anyway, Radiohead is, in my opinion, one of the smartest bands out there and you can appreciate that through their lyrics, complex compositions, instrumentation, the production details ... Absolutely brilliant. I have attended their concerts 4 times since '98 and LIVE they are completely incredible, MASTERS!

"Rain" is also wordplay for the homophone "Reign" (to hold royal office; rule as King) ... as in they who 'reign (hold power) over' their subjects ~ the general public (tax slave masses). _"Reign down on me ... from a 'great height'"_ (i.e. "hold power from a position of superior authority") ... Such as was alluded to earlier in the song: _"When I am King, you will be first against the wall, with your opinion which is of no consequence at all."_

I can't ever just listen to one song from this masterpiece. When It stopped I heard that beautiful open guitar strum of Subterranean Homesick Alien in my head, and was disappointed to not hear it through my headphones. I have a wall of music at home: vinyl CD's, tapes. I have a closet full of guitars and a number of keyboards. I live for music. I listen to all kinds of music from Medieval music to Electronic Ambient and Dance music. Radiohead and Yes are tied for my favorite musical acts of all time. There are similarities. They put a lot into the composition of their songs and while that makes them a little difficult to digest on first listen sometimes, the benefit is you can listen for decades and still catch some new nuance of a song, and the songs remain fresh and timeless. Thom Yorke is an absolutely amazing song writer and singer, and Jonny Greenwood can play any instrument he picks up - that was him on lead guitar and the keyboards, but I think his real talent is as an arranger. After Thom writes a melody and chord sequence, Jonny (with input from the rest of the band as well) comes up with ideas on what sounds to use, breaks and transitions, scoring, whatever he thinks will make the song better. He is classically trained and has worked with classical composers (Penderecki) and has scored quite a few movies, most notably for Paul Thomas Anderson who has chosen Jonny as his go -to film scorer. Try "Let Down" or "Subterranean Homesick Alien" (an homage to Bob Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues') next. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF

Radiohead and Thom Yorke make songs that need more than one listen to really appreciate how fantastic they are. Once they get under your skin there is no turning back.

So glad you reacted to this one, cheered me up quite a bit. Their albums starting with Ok computer, through Kid A , Amnesiac and lastly Hail to the thief, changed my perspective on just how intense music can be. Have a great weekend.

Jayvee, we don't know each other but you are such an important person to me because of your genuine reactions and I want to share this song's meaning to me with you- I was in college when 9/11 happened. Many of my friends were in school in New York and I could not get in touch with any of them that day. I went about my business, going to my classes, not fully understanding what was happening. I went to work that night after school and was watching the black and white TV in the restaurant break room, seeing replays of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over again. When I was driving home after work that night this CD was playing in my car. The gas stations had lines around the block. No one knew what was going to happen around the world and I didn't know if my friends were even safe in NYC. And Paranoid Android started playing in my car. "Rain down from a great hight. That's it sir, you're leaving, the crackle of pigskin, the dust and the screaming, the yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit, God loves his children". And I broke down and sobbed on my steering wheel. That was when it all hit me. Thank you for what you do. You are magic.

I had the joy of hearing this when it first came out. I'd never heard anything like it before, helped shape my worldview on music and art.

An amazing album and an amazing track. There's not many ballad style tracks that energize me but Paranoid Android really does it for me. One of my favourites
