The Spektrum has two external antennas and only one is used to transmit on. The second antenna which is in the handle is used for telemetry receive. The TX16S has the same set up but the receive antenna is inside the transmitter housing. Both transmitters come stock with the same output power as specified by the FCC for US transmitters. The only way to increase transmit range is to modify the transmit antenna to focus the energy more line of site to the aircraft. Most transmit antennas are omni directional meaning there is no concentration of radio signal in any direction. There are aftermarket antennas that will make the signal more directional. Much of the effective transmit range depends on receiver design and receive antenna design and placement in the aircraft.

I own both Spectrum and Radio Master. Both are great radios. I moved off Futaba after 30 years. I wrote letters to them and felt stupid for sticking with them for so long. With express LRS and telemetry Being standard now. I think Radiomaster is the clear winner. If you want an easy-to-use out-of-the-box solution and just want some fun, Spektrum is a great choice. I own Spektrum for one simple reason the Wireless Trainer. You can use it with a radio master. Nothing extra. Some people are sticking GPS and Bluetooth into the Radio Master.

As an old timer RC'er pondering Open TX vs Spectrum or Futaba to replace my orphaned Hitec Aurora 9, I think that beginners who buy Open TX , and are overwhelmed with the technology may not be willing to say so on YT or RC Groups. For those who are not interested in multirotor drones, or flying with goggles and telemetry, and who are not concerned about the initial higher cost of Spectrum or Futaba and cost of receivers, may be better advised to go with Spectrum or Futaba. You can peddle your Spectrum later and convert to Open TX if desired. Customer support is important to many RC'ers for model setup, trouble shooting or repairs that may become necessary. I find Spectrum ads hard to follow when trying to choose which system best suits my rather basic needs. I have lost trust in Horizon Hobbies and Tower Hobbies during recent years.

No doubt! this is very good advice, and it all depends on the experience you desire in the hobby. Some people have $500 to drop on a radio and want a reliable, well-known, simple experience, and a spektrum radio is great for that. I'd say in terms of ease of use spektrum is running laps around radiomaster even in 2023... keep in mind this video is 3 years old. If you simply want to buy a plane, charge it, fly it, and then land it and repeat over and over to your heart's content, thats a great case for spektrum. Radiomaster obviously has the cost advantage but it also has a much greater "potential" for features and use cases, depending on how invested you would like to be. Yes, it has a steep learning curve in the beginning, but you can do crazy things with open/edgeTX... and thats huge. A lot of people get into flying to learn, and take that learning curve with stride, but its totally understandable that something simple and reliable has great advantages too. Thanks for watching!

Think carefully about what you need. I came back to rc after a break of almost 10 years. Watched some videos, lots of videos, decided I needed to upgrade my perfectly functioning Spektrum DX8 with a TX16S. Big mistake. The Spektrum did everything I needed, and need now, but without the huge learning curve, the 'Why wont it arm?' and the 'Did I miss something critical in the setup?' anxiety. It's the 80/20 rule, 80% of the people only use 20% of the functions of any given piece of technology. I don't need, or want, most of the stuff that the TX16S does. What I need can be done in the Spectrum or the flight controller, mixes, flaperons/spoilerons etc, all simple in the Spektrum. Not hard in the TX16S either, but I already had it and didn't need to upgrade to a lower quality tx, all whistles and bells that I'll never toot or ring. Too late, sold the Spektrum too cheap, bought the TX16S. Gradually getting to grips with it but wasted a lot of time when I could have been flying and a bit of money that could have bought another plane.

@CustomRCMods, At 12:30 you said you wouldn't trust the Radiomaster for longer range flights because it only has one antenna, but then you said that Radiomaster is the one that supports crossfire. @CustomFPV4 жыл бұрын
It would be about the same, but the versatility on the radiomaster-xfire offering yields a much better deal imo - I filmed this video 6 months ago. Since then I have been flying and pushing the range of the internal module to its limits. I have only had one brown out, which is better than my luck with the dx6/6e. I would say the radiomaster is still completely sufficient for anything you would use the DX6 for.
@garygullikson6349 Жыл бұрын
@@CustomFPV Your credibility suffers when you misuse much misunderstood term "brownout". Brownouts are not really the fault of the RC system, but are related to problems with the current capacity of the BEC part of electronic speed controls or flight battery packs used in IC powered models (or) number of servos, operating simultaneously, exceeds capacity of BEC or flight batteries causing reduction in voltage as seen by the receiver causing receiver to go into reset mode with loss of control. Some receivers were more sensitive to low voltage dips and are more prone to go into reset mode "brownout" . Use of flight stabilizers causes more servos to draw more current with possible "brownout" problems. Not a simple subject!

Fair. I have had little experience outside of the spektrum ecosystem, and Yes, I did encounter issues with range and brown outs on my DX6E before upgrading to my dx6, But then the diversity antenna kept signal strength strong. Spektrum has Model Match. TX16s has not (*). This means you can start flying a model with reverse servo output or other critical parameter. This can be so dangerous especially flying helicopters like I do. We are not talking about taking a brand new helicopter blown out but blow out someone`s head. So, no, while I have a TX16s I cannot compare it to the Spektrum line no matter the price difference or the good things I like to the Radiomaster. They should not be compared. Model Match itself leaves no comparison room. I bought a second TX16s, it`s on its way, only to check this: If I have set receiver ID to eg 1 to one TX16s bound to say receiver A and to the other TX16s receiver ID again 1 but bound to a different receiver (B) then will each Tx be controlling only its own bound receiver or will be a disaster of two radios controlling a receiver even if it was not bound on that radio, just because they have the same ID on radio. (*) it can be set if you KNOW that you MUST set it and if you REMEMBER each time to do so and still there is the unknown above mystery. So, the real question is: Is the receiver ID a GUID or just an ID numbering that is same to each TX16s ?
@CustomFPV4 жыл бұрын
Fair points, and just like anything, if there is a feature that really appeals to how you use it, and seals the deal, thats good for you, but not for everyone. And yes, these two can very much be compared, thats exactly what I did here. They each have their own pros and cons, thats a given for two different products on the market. The Model match function is very nice, however, If you set different IDs for each of your RXes (as I do) this is a non-issue because the radio simply won't connect if the ID doesn't line up. That is a really good thought about the RXes on certain IDs being controllable from different TXes, but we must remember that the other TXes don't have bind to the RX, therefore will not be connected to them (its not just a broadcasted signal anyone can tap into like a radio channel, you need to bind) so I am pretty sure the ID numbers is just a way of partitioning and organizing the list of bound RXes on a certain transmitter, but because the other txes arent bound to those RXes. I may be wrong, thats my understanding of it, i am yet to have any issues
@loc47253 жыл бұрын
I'm nearly a year late but oh well..🙄 With Frsky and quite possibly Spektrum your radio has it's own Globally Unique IDentification (GUID) and it's this + the slot number which gives rise to what is known as model match. And I believe this feature is present in the multimodule code.

There wasn't even nothing to compare here, the same as comparing a calculator vs a PC. Anything spectrum or other radios can do, the TX16S can do better, further up to 100km (ELRS 868-915 Mhz), with a higher refresh rate and with endless features. The only downside to the TX16S is that if you want to use at least 10% of the features, you'll need to study at OpenTX university or better at EdgeTX university. Ha-ha just kidding :P

Sorry, No. You see, the TX16S and the iX20 are very comparable radios in the features department, but when it comes to price there is no question. I don't know one person who has enough money to just throw into a radio like that, or someone who would rather buy a 1400 dollar radio rather than a 140 dollar radio and a bunch of quads/planes/helis. you get the point. There is simply no comparison. The DX6 is one of the closest in price to the TX16S, and obviously it lacks in comparison, but thats just what you get with a spektrum product. Its quality, but very overpriced in comparison. And you know what? I'm just gonna say it. I would rather have the TX16S over the iX20 price aside! OpenTX is much more powerful than Spektrum's Android OS and also lets not forget about the multiprotocol module inside, and the JR Bay that natively supports crossfire... The fact that I am saving 90% of the money is just the cherry on top. That's my opinion, maybe money is no object to you and you are willing to pay however much it takes to have a spektrum radio that is barely comparable to the TX16 or T16 or other openTX models. The TX12S is ONLY suitable for ALL Spektrum planes if you add a FULL 4-in-1 Multi Protocol Module in the JR bay on the back. It is ONLY sold as either the ELRS Internal Module Version OR the single chip CC2500 internal version. The single chip CC2500 DOES NOT do Spektrum! Great question! I still use the TX16S! I actually gave my original one to my buddy and upgraded to the max edition 2 years ago, and both TX16Ses are still working great! I highly recommend it!! My multiprotocol module still works great and I had excellent luck flying all my planes on the channel (at the time of this video) on DSMX without any brown outs or weak connection. I pretty much use ELRS for everything these days and have an external module for that. I really like the switch to EdgeTX over OpenTX, EdgeTX allows the use of the touchscreen and has a much more graphical look with on screen buttons which is great. The touchscreen is responsive and although its not a super high quality one it is pretty responsive and is pleasant to use. I never had issues with the stock gimbals but I swapped them out for the AG01s on my TX16S Max and it feels amazing. Super robust and precise while being smooth as well. I use this radio mainly for tiny whoop racing these days and I have very little bad to say about it. The internal battery charging circuit failed on my original one for some reason, that was after 2 years. Not a huge deal to just charge the pack on a normal hobby charger, and i even think you can get replacement parts. I haven't had any issues over the past 2 1/2 years with the max edition though, and it has been used way more. I'm charging it up on the internal circuit as we speak lol. Overall a really solid radio. I think spektrum is pretty much out of the picture at this point, this is just a way better value. I have flown with the NX8 a bit and although it is a nice radio It is so much less capable than the radiomaster at a higher pricepoint, the value isn't there like it is with the TX16S If you're looking to buy a radio and don't know what to get, I would say that spektrum is only a good option if you are strictly going to be flying airplanes with spektrum gear and most likely SAFE and AS3X and all that on board.I have had trouble getting all the functionality of SAFE with the 4in1 module on the TX16S. In most all other cases, I would say a radiomaster or jumper radio is the way to go. The different models between those brands come in all shapes and sizes but they all use edgeTX with the same button layout and therefore have most of the same capabilites, so depending on the grip you are looking for you can choose from those. I really like the TX16S grip but I have friends who prefer the boxer and zorro. All personal preference. Hope that helps! sorry for the long post!

Not a fair comparison at all. A better comparison of options would be the DX i12 to the radiomasterTX16s
@CustomFPV4 жыл бұрын
Hold on.... wait up... How much is an iX12!?!? 500 for less features than the radiomaster?!?! what?!!?! Yes. The radiomaster is more comparable to the iX12 than the dx6, but the comparison is the Radiomaster and Spektrum offering based on price. the dx6 is almost 100 more too!!! that’s the point of my comparison. not apples to apples of course, but for people looking to put 200 bucks into a radio, here are 2 options, and the TX16s is way better. Spektrum fanboys have been calling this unfair since i made the video months ago, but it’s not fair how little features you get for how much you pay when you fly spektrum....
@timblankenship78174 жыл бұрын
CustomRCMods you made some valid point and I understand the cost associated with the ix12. But, I’m more concern about how you are comparing two TX that and way different in technology. The DX6 was designed in 2008 and the TX16 in 2020? That’s like comparing a PS4 to a Commodore 64. So pick a comparison between two that are in the same league of design. Like maybe the TX16 to the jumper or radio link. I was saying ix12 for the tech side. But your right, that is a much more expensive radio but same generation of technology

Background: I dont have experience with programmable spektrum radio, nor with open TX. I have used Jumper t8sg (with devation software), but its cumbersome for more complex settings and i havent seen that many videos on it lately. I have also try use it on simulator for long time and found out it wasn't very comfortable even compare to rtf spektrum dxe radio.

Of course! I actually have 2 setup videos on that very topic uploaded already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYqyZJWEZtt_nZY kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5exZmmQrMSngNk As for openTX. The learning curve is certainly there, but learning the software is very rewarding. If you are super concerned, Spektrum’s interface is guess free and overall robust for beginners to find success with. One thing that may have frustrated you about your old jumper is the small screen and basic interface system running advanced software. Thanks to the big full color screen, the radiomaster is much more well laid out and it’s easier to navigate around in my opinion. overall, youtube tutorials will be invaluable, and after a few of those, you will be well on your way. As an example, I can program my DX8 to talk to me, giving me a running time count down, love it!
@CustomFPV4 жыл бұрын
Its expandable via the SD card, so is the sky is the limit. I would't be concerned about it, I have 50 models on the stock SD Card without issue, but you can get an upgraded one for a few bucks and you will be set. In terms of the voice, yes! Same answer. With OpenTX, again the sky is the limit, there is a decent variety of default phrases and options available, but you can configure it in the OpenTX software for it to say anything you want, you can switch the voice, I think you can even record if you would like and use that. In short, spektrum voice alerts may be a little easier to set up, but.the OpenTX interface wins all day in the features realm, and as an experienced hobbyist I think thats what you want if you don't mind a little learning curve. Even when they fix something, like the floppy sliders on the first version, it is a pretty poor attempt, the sliders still have very little resistance and almost no positive centre. There are videos with tips how to fix it but why didn't Radiomaster fix it? Use a Crossfire module and the TX buzzes like a hornet in a bottle. The fix is to move a cable and put in some shielding. Again, why didn't Radiomaster do that? And in the Radiomaster FB group I see as many 'My TX16S doesn't work anymore or arrived broken' as I do questions about function. I will be keeping mine, it's the recent version with two speakers and touch screen, but a small lottery win or a tax rebate and I'll get something with a bit of quality, something that doesn't feel like it came out of a Xmas cracker.

Actually with an additional 4-in-1 module in the JR bay, it is NOT a 16 ch radio - it is a 32 ch radio that can use a VERY wide variety of different (up to 16ch) receivers, including Spektrum. Can your current preferred Transmitter do that? And at what price ratio to the TX16S? 🤔

This guy sounds like he is trying to knock down the Radio Master TX16s. I am flying big expensive RC Warbirds with my RM TX16s with no problems.and wile it has a bit of a learning curve it’s nothing that a determined individual cannot learn. Also after having purchased a Spectrum Ix12 and Ix20 at two and three times the price of even the most expensive version of the TX16s which both Spectrum Ix radios greatly disappoint me. And I learned just how shitty that Horizon Tech support really is. How they refuse to communicate with their customers and would not talk to me and help me out. I have dumped Spectrum transfers. Because I don’t need my flying radio to have a cellphone built into it to be able to fly quite well. Having a cellphone built into the radio is just more unnecessary complexity that most RC pilots don’t need and just one more thing to screw up and brake. The RM TX16s is a computer radio but it doesn’t have a cellphone built into it. Thank God! So I do highly recommend the Radio Master TX16s transmitter.

Nope, this video was me switching away from the spektrum DX6 for the TX16S. I absolutely love the TX16S, im on my 2nd one now. My main point with this video is that the spektrum UI is much simpler and easier to use than OpenTX or EdgeTX. It also is better for using with Horizon's proprietary technologies such as SAFE and AS3X which are found on many planes that people own. For a beginner flying some sort of BNF horizon product the spektrum radios are a preferred choice. Now for nearly everyone else, the TX16S is the best option, no question. The EdgeTX interface can be confusing but once you take the time to understand it it is quite intuitive. The 4in1 Module is great for binding to nearly any protocol of 2.4 link and of course ELRS is really where its at these days especially for FPV. The TX16S is also far more adjustable and customizable for each pilot's flying style. So overall, the TX16S is the clear choice, but not for everyone. Its all about what fits your personal application best. Thanks for watching!

I wouldn't own a SPECTRUM Radio their Crap the have Binding issues and if it needs 3 receivers (Satalights) is surlly CRAP. I bought Aurora 9X - 9 Channel 2.4GHz Aircraft Computer Radio 25 years ago because they had a reliable system and Telemitary. Granted it wasn't built in but it worked. GPS was mostly what I was concerned about Ground speed distance and Altitude. all there 25 years ago.

I'm certainly very happy with my radiomaster. I'm on my 2nd now (sold this one to a friend and got the MAX version for myself with the AG01 metal gimbals) and I don't have any complaints. I will say there is a time and place for spektrum, typically when flying a Horizon Hobby plane (eflite, hobbyzone, etc) that comes with the spektrum gear and all the smart features integrated, as well as when flying other planes. But yeah I still fly planes with the radiomaster without issue. Thanks for watching!

Unfortunately I sold my transmitter off months ago, sorry! Look in the "radio equipment" section on the RCGroups Classifieds, there are a lot of good deals on there. That or FB Marketplace, Ebay, etc. Good luck!

The DX6 is an excellent starter radio - I wouldn't recommend an OpenTx radio to a novice unless they were very computerate . If you don't like the stick tension or mode then you change it - nothing about doing that voids the warranty on either radio. I noticed that you adjusted the stick tension on the Radiomaster didn't that void the warranty? The DX9 HAS auxiliary trim switches. The Radiomaster is only 16 channels with two receivers or SBUS with only one its an eight channel radio. You talk about Spektrum locking you into its infrastructure but let me ask who's receivers do you use - I'm betting they're FrSky or possibly Spektrum. Other receivers are available but rarely used. Its interesting that you say you don't trust the Radiomaster with anything other than foamies - speaks volumes. You say you are going to use R9 or Crossfire to increase the range but these radios, certainly the Spektrum, have a range of around 2Km (6500 ft) I have 20-20 vision and I cant see a plane with a 8 foot wingspan at much more than 500m (1600 ft) enough to accurately control it and my recollection of your's and my legislation is that a plane / drone must be in line of sight at all times. Have you compared it with the radio that this one is copied from? Have you considered comparing apples with apples - just putting it out there.
@CustomFPV4 жыл бұрын
All valid points, Just things to consider. Let me just start off by saying that I have flown spektrum for 4 years now, and driven with them for 6 before that. I have had zero complaints, they are great systems, this just changes the game. I agree, open tx is definitely not a good starter, and thats where I can truly recommend spektrum. Their menus are straightforward and the whole interface is just a breeze. I touched on that in the video. And I have been refused warranty support after opening up another one of my radios to adjust tension, the warranty issue was months later and unrelated. Maybe the support team member was wrong, but either way I was refused assistance. And no actually, it doesn't void the warranty to open up the TX16S. If I recall correctly RadioMaster actually has recommended people to open it up and do the fix themselves rather than waiting for it to ship back and be repaired, but that has been the second option if things didn't work out. I've been hanging around the TX16S RCG Thread where RM has gone above and beyond to satisfy their customers. And okay, I didn't know the DX9 had aux trims, but you are still paying $480 for that... In terms of my RXes, I use a mix, mainly all DSMX, but very few genuine spektrum. A lot of my planes run LemonRX units, which have performed excellent in comparison to my genuine units. Obviously I just switched from the DX6 so it makes sense I am running spektrum at the moment. I usually just try to find what is cheapest, and the Lemons continue to be the best option for me because like their TXes, spektrum's RXes are over the moon expensive. About the module and worries about range, I stand 100% corrected on that. Reason I initially said that was because I had issues with brown outs (Spektrum TX to Genuine Spektrum RX) at my field with my DX6E, as well as my DX6. The cell tower in the corner sometimes doesn't play nice :). Its an easy assumption to make that the DX6 would be the best performer, as it has a genuine spektrum TX Module running diversity antennas. So on the bench it seems like a downgrade to go back to a single antenna and run an aftermarket module. However, so far I am yet to have an issue with the range on this thing. I don't know if it is the output power, antenna quality, or what but It has outperformed the Spektrum TXes so far. One other person in the comments also touched on this and corrected me as well. As for the foamies comment, I only fly foamies, so I guess that doesn't mean much. But if I had a multi thousand dollar plane at this point I wouldn't hesitate to trust the RadioMaster to control it. Like I said, I fly at a field with a cell tower, that has greatly reduced range on my models. All of my models are easily kept in line of sight, but again with the spektrum stuff I had brown outs for some reason even at comparably close range. Anyways, I do think this is an apples to apples comparison in some respects. If you have the money, I am sure you can have a great experience with a DX9, iX12, DX18, iX20, etc. So maybe money is no object to you and flying a $500 dollar radio is a piece of cake, and you buy $100+ RXes every day. A lot of my viewers on this channel are money minded individuals, who are new to the hobby or at the intermediate level. My point in making this video is to show that in comparison to other TXes in this price range, I believe the TX16S reigns superior as a good (preferably 2nd) radio for most people. While I could go out and fly a 4-500 dollar radio myself, that doesn't show my subscribers that there is something Just as good in the $140 dollar range. Also, lets not forget how the RX opens up the playing field for other RXes... people really trying to save money could easily spend under 10 bucks on a FlySky RX and still have a great experience, where if you have a spektrum radio you are limited to getting a $20-30 LemonRX model at the very least, if not a $50-100 Spektrum depending on the model. The goal of my channel is to provide an inspiration for people to get into this hobby and show them that they don't need to completely empty their wallet to do it. I think the TX16S does exactly that, or at least helps someone grow from more of a beginner TX. Thanks for watching, sorry that got a little long. Have a nice day!

I use the specktrum dx6 and the range is terrible. I cant even fly my micro quads to the back of my house without them falling out of the air. I get failsafe's in my 60ft x 60ft backyard if I fly behind something. I took apart my dx6 once and noticed the transmitter is less than 100mw so I don't imagine there is any way that the radiomaster has less range than the dx6.
@richardlong36154 жыл бұрын
@@MrKeith5021 If your DX6 is not reaching 60ft there's something seriously wrong with it. I've flown with mine out to to 300 to 400 yds with no fail safes. The range is said to be up to 2.5 km. If you fly behind a tree or a building on 2.4 GHz you will loose signal and that applies to any brand. FYI all radios have an output of 100 mW.

@@kwhopper1100 I think I read that back when I was adding my BNF models. There were a couple of posts on RCHaters though, one from a Spektrum employee who stated that the Spektrum telemetry range is comparable to that of FrSky and another on the (IIRC) Multi thread which stated that the RSSI warning hadn't been calibrated, so either do your own tests or just turn it off, which is what was recommended.

all the negatives you said about the dx6 were false. so how can you compare when your just guessing?
@CustomFPV2 жыл бұрын
That’s not false. that’s my opinion. this comparison is a no brainer to me. You are watching my video, you are getting my opinion. The only “facts” are for the TX16s. the tx16s has more features that’s a fact. 16 channels, touch screen, multi protocol module, more adjustability, module compatibility, etc. It’s a fact that the dx6 only has 6 channels, it doesn’t have as much adjustability, it doesn’t have a touch screen or a full color lcd screen, etc. see what i’m saying? If you like the dx6 more power to you but that doesn’t make it better than the tx16s, that’s supported by facts and just is my opinion after using both at length. Maybe you are a spectrum fanboy. That’s fine. But that doesn’t make my opinions or the facts I talk about in this video invalid. Thanks for watching!
