By giving money to an iwi and not a hapu which signed the treaty they’re already in breach. The iwi is a corporation set up after the treaty was signed in order to corral Maori into easy to manage entities. These entities go for survival over divvying out the funds. It’s understandable. They do offer scholarships and other things you can appply for I’ve done it myself. So blame the iwi but blame the waitangi tribunal and also the govt for not giving money directly to hapu. Hapu whose land has been trampled and stolen and confiscated and we only got about 4% of it back so don’t complain to much we should take it all back.

I think the proof maori did cede sovereignty is the chiefs who didn't sign it as they understood it to mean just that hence they didn't sign it.
@joskempbaker8319 ай бұрын
That line of thought only works for those chiefs who signed the English version - and history tells us that the 39 who did were advised to by a the missionary Maunsell - a trusted and by all accounts, respected member of the clergy by Maori - as there was no more room left on the Te Reo copy which states Maori did not cede their Tino Rangatiratanga.
@jackiebiggs70719 ай бұрын
@@joskempbaker831 I believe Maori kept their chieftainship rights over the territories and boundaries they agreed upon at the signing. Do you really think the British empire was agreeing to 'co govern' with a few thousand people. New Zealand was a nuisance to them as there were no resources worth conquering the country for and they didn't need another war, they were already engaged in 4 separate conflicts and new Zealand wasn't worth the expense but I'm sure queen Victoria and the British government didn't see themselves as anything but the dominant party to the agreement.
@joskempbaker8319 ай бұрын
@@jackiebiggs7071 Yes Jackie, retaining tino rangatiratanga over their whenua, Resources and people are what Rangatira agreed to. The co-governance thing I would say not so much, as this word contradicts tino rangatiratanga of our leaders - in saying that, and this is my personal view - finding a way to co-habitate without trampling over each other has to be a goal we can set as a Nation. I have family members who served in the NZ forces who promised allegiance to God, for King and for Country, losing their lives in doing so. The expanse between isn't so vast that a bridge cannot be built. I have grandchildren of Britsh, Scottish, Canadian, Australian and American descent as well as Maori, I want their world and world view to be better and more than what is going on today. As for the supremacy of New Zealand Parliament, the basis statement of principle as a first principle of law can be found in Halsbury (3rd Edition, volume 36-statutes paragraph 559 at page 337 of that volume) as follows:. ‘559. Legislative supremacy of Parliament- The legislative authority of the Sovereign in Parliament is supreme (e), A statute, whether public or private (f), can define or override the common law (g), abrogate local custom (h), and amend or appeal the provision of earlier statutes (i). Since, however, every Parliament is supreme, one Parliament cannot derogate from the powers of a subsequent Parliament (k), and it follows that a statute can neither provide that it shall be incapable of repeal (l) nor dictate the form of subsequent legislation (m)’. 12.1 As can be found in (i) of above, [para. 12] New Zealand Parliament cannot derogate from the Sovereign supremacy of England and England cannot derogate from the Sovereign supremacy of the Maori Nation assembled in Parliament at Waitangi and following the principle found in (k) a statute does not need to state that it cannot be repealed because as found in (i) once put into force it cannot be repealed by any later Parliament, its provisions can merely be brought forward into current legislation, because a later Parliament cannot derogate from its forefathers legislation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The important section is below. Cool story. I can't speak french, but I don't go commenting that fact on French videos 🤣🤣 International law is pretty clear that the text signed by the natives, in their native tongue, is the document that holds precedent. If there are discrepencies between documents, then the one in their tongue is the one to be taken as law. If there is any misunderstanding, or any vagueness, then the interpretation also goes in favour of Māori. Again, international law. It's not that hard to learn enough to translate the text yourself. Google translate is pretty good these days, there are very reliable Māori dictionaries, and ChatGPT is specifically designed to understand language. No excuse for pākehā like you and I to be entirely unable AND unwilling to learn the language AND to comment on Māori texts in the same vein... We can continue being ignorant, or we can learn and read for ourselves. We don't get to do both at once.
