This is wonderful. Music, art, writing - all of these subjects should be in all our schools. Years ago when I taught Social Science at the high school level, (a class most kids hate for its boredom). I did two things which really made a difference. Every other written assignment was in the local dialect the kids spoke. They were so excited about it. I had talked with them about the importance of dialect as a identity and power. They started asking me “Doc in our dialect or standard English?” By the time they finished they could all write and speak the standard English they would need for interviews, tests, etc. Not all perfectly but for the 10 minutes I spent in every class teaching them they did very well. I remember giving them an assignment about the Constitution and the best answer, in fact one of the best interpretations I’ve had at either the university or high school level, was a rap written by a shy young man who never participated in class. He stood up in front of the class to present it. Decades later I can see his face lit up with joy and pride. These children are beautiful. They are a treasure. Many thanks to their teacher’s hard work and love.
