Only just now tuning in, haven't heard the episode. My current take is that there are two possible culprits for the Doom: The Maesters (and by extension, House Hightower), and the leadership of Braavos (Sea Lord and/or Iron Bank.) Personally, I lean towards Braavos. Really looking forward to your take! The mechanism of destruction was pretty obviously the Faceless Men - but they only kill on contract. The connection between them and the Iron Bank is....interesting. They were hired to eliminate a competing banking family by the Iron Bank....so we know there's a history of cooperation there...and of course they're co-located. At the same time, there's good evidence that the Maesters have long been attempting to kill all the dragons. The Valyrians had a prophecy that the gold of Casterly Rock would destroy them...which probably explains why they almost entirely avoided the continent of Westeros, even though they could easily have conquered it - after all, a single family managed to do it on their own with only 3 dragons. Meanwhile, Valyria seems to have been actively searching for Braavos - perhaps, given their race's gift of visions, they had a related prophecy? Perhaps they knew that Lannister gold was somehow related to Braavos? I have to think that Valyria was responsible for the destruction of hardhome - the whole place exploded and all the survivors were apparently enslaved. Classic Valyrian blood/fire magic. I think they must have thought that Hardhome was the "free city" of Braavos that they were looking for. Maybe that's even why Braavos was never found - Valyria assumed they'd already destroyed it? So....how did the gold of Casterly Rock wind up funding the kill-contract from the faceless men? The gold in question was almost certainly the price that House Lannister paid for Brightroar. So...who did they pay? It seems unlikely to me that House Lannister paid the Maesters. That's just not how the Maesters operate, they swear off personal belongings and everything. I think the Lannisters must have paid the Iron Bank to source Brightroar....and that money was then used to hire the faceless men, to eliminate Valyria, who was actively searching for Braavos so they could destroy it. It's still entirely possible that the Hightowers, through the maesters, were responsible, they DO live on Battle Isle....but my money is still on Braavos, acting to save themselves. The Valyrians appeared to have feared Braavos - they never targeted Old Town.

Same place Pycelle gets ice for his milk in AGoT 😉 It’s never specified in story but pre electricity, ice was cut and moved from freezing locales to storage wherever powerful people wanted it to be.
