Nice job. I have had an Es1 for years and a learned a couple new tricks from watching this. One trick I love is turning off the bpm sync on the delay and turning the time down to the minimum, then cranking the delay level to max for a nice low pass bump. I even did a step motion sequence for the delay level for a nice pumping low pass effect recently that was killer. I have been looking at newer groove boxes with synth engines but the ES1 just has something special and fun about it. I also like to use the audio input gate on stuff like live vocals and synths for interesting effects. I don’t know of anything else that does that.

Sold mine a few years ago. Starting to regret it a little. Listening back to some old recordings I have I noticed it did something nice to drumbeats. Made them sound more analog, not every beat sounds exactly the same. A bit like what people try to do with round robin samples the days.

I think the ES-1 is more hands on than the esx-1. The knobs are not as stiff as in the esx and the the global delay is really fun to use. Nice track!

Bothers me slightly that you are switching between patterns using the dial instead of the 'pattern select' feature. You could also have used song mode if you knew exactly what order and how many reps each pattern had. But that doesn't leave much room for improv.

JR No you cant just type in how many times you want a pattern to be chained together in song mode. You can copy paste in a sense or just manually select the same pattern 2 or 3 or 4 or however many times. Its not hard at all and doesnt make for any more work really. You can also create a chain of patterns(song) while recording in real time. I am notpositive but you may even be able to tweak knobs while real time recording a song into the electribe so even if the same pattern is used throughout the song, the effects will be different and independant from the rest of the song, like adding clearcoat(effects) over the base coat(drum pattern chain).

seeing as this is a sampler, can one load in acoustic drum wav samples and use it as a 'rock' drum sequencer and to also sequence an external analog synth? I'm looking to buy one of these and i hope this is the answer. cool sounds here but one could totally do a minimal rock thing, no?

Yes your assumption is correct this is a sampler with built-in memory expandable via SmartMedia card, You can load your wav-files into it to create your arrangements. You can record samples too via mic and line in. And yes, via MIDI you can use it as an external hardware sequencer also. It's an awesome machine with a lot of creative possibilities. The only slight drawback is - as common with older hardware - the SmartMedia-protocol. You'll need a separate card reader/writer unit for your computer if it hasn't got any and data transfer is pretty slow too at least for contemporary standards. But that's it, no biggie. Besides that this machine is worth every cent even today.

Justin Ervin the sample rate might not be what you want. The roll button is good for it. The smart media for it are rare and sort of expensive now. A lot of 3rd party ones can fail. You probably have to get a smart media card adapter USB for PC to really drag and drop over files because the audio in on here is good, but it’s analog so it won’t be as clean sampling into it my opinion. If you can get the new reason 11 suite or just a standard that is a great starting tool for trap or any sort of music like that I know it might be a little spend he but it is worth it in the long run to maybe learn a daw at this point

I have an old roland multi track, now I'm looking for something like reason in hardware form, on a budget. Something that will let me import samples and sequence like reason, like the song playlist mode where you arrange your patterns to create the song. Is there anything like this out there?
