I had one of these briefly during my first DAWless period, around 2010-2011 or so. I can't really remember what drew me to it other than that I got a good deal on it. I listed it for sale on craigslist and got an offer the same day. Went to meet the guy in a parking lot near my house, up pulls a (definitely self engineered) lifted pickup truck, out steps a guy wearing overalls, sandals, and no shirt, who runs up to me enthusiastically and exclaims "Man I've always wanted one of these!". I think about that interaction a lot and I often wonder what kind of redneck EDM he came up with.

I bought the ESX-1 as the brain for my setup and it was a huge mistake back then when I didn't have as much gear, but now that I have more stuff, I'm so glad I kept it for it's absolute filth and workflow that always inspires me in some unexpected way.

@@inthefade the best brain for setup is the EMX1. (5 midi channels) You can control 5 synths parts and connect to midi whatever you want. I have the Red and Blue from 2007. One of the first pieces of gear I could get my hands on in my late teens/early 20s and actually liked... Sat next to a novation x-station and a JV-1010, all of which played along well. The whole setup has been featured on the channel by now, if I'm not mistaken. Never sounded clean or modern, even for the time, it just did its own thing with a gritty, boomy, almost bicrushed sound to it. But it was crazy fun, hands-on, and guaranteed to put out something groovy whenever given some time. Jams were hot. So much better than the grey/blue faced snoozefest that now holds its name. This is unironically good gear in my book, Mr. Pilz. Greeat video as always, by the way ❤

Key to understand the electribe aesthetic is the pattern copy feature. Instead of making a song from one cut&mute pattern, you can copy it to the next slot, modify it, and repeat. This also forces you to commit. Sounds are bound to pattern slots, so you can't really have control over it across all patterns. This makes the songs made in this way sound ever changing. Of course, you can emulate it on any gear or daw, but here the device boxes you in with limitations.

bad gear that I wouldn't mind having for 90s beats, but I was not thinking it could sound as good as what you did with it. Especially great sounds when you paired it with its sibling. Anytime the first image I see on a video is Bill Murray, I know I'm in for laughs but had no idea how hard. Great episode, as always.

This was my first groove box and I still sample it all the time… The delays and FX are super fun too. I really hope you get the the green one… It’s probably the most unique sounding of all 4 and is perfect for show, because it’s both awesomely fun to use and a low bitrate, smart media disaster… and I think watching you sample, chop and “truncate” on that frustrating little beast, would be incredibly entertaining.

Used the ES1, ESX-1, and EMX-1 for almost 10 years touring and these things are built like tanks and have a ton of different sounds you can create with them, esp if you added your own samples. Loved this video, reminds me to pull the ole ESX1 back out every once in a while, cheers!

The only electribe with no audio thru, damn that. Still limitations aside its simplicity and characterfulness inspire. Fun episode and I love seeing you feature old school gear. Still waiting on Yamaha dx200 to feature. Also the roland SH32 would be cool. Even dare I propose an Emu XL7?

Something about the tonality of it is just like the green one. Fun to own and muck around, but could never seem to squeeze the clear sound out of it compared to if I'd just sequenced straight out of the DAW. +1 for bringing the retro vibes home to me.

The EM-1 (and EMX-1) are both old school favorites in my collection, so thank you for giving them their proper respect! Yeah, the Electribe2s were other later grooveboxes that lost the original workflow in favor of a project/DAW approach, like Roland’s MC-101. Roland’s SH4d has filled an alternate Electribe2 approach, but the motion sequence is not as stable as Korg’s among other quirkiness and sometimes buggy firmware. The EM-1 is a classic despite not being able to store or export patterns/parts. When it fills up, you must erase (or pull some sysex maneuvre). GREAT SHOW and jams!!! 8:33

The best of the series are the valve models. I had all series but not the electribe2... because It seem to hear a daw. Very far from the valve's warm sounds.

hey i own the korg EMX its actually the first piece of gear i ever bought and shortly after i got it i started watching your show actually. one of my favorite instruments ive ever played. i forgot the EM-1's existed but due to their limited features, thats kind of why i avoided getting one lol but i hope EMX doesnt count as bad gear!!!! idk!!!! maybe if it does count ill just relish in the 2000s cheese 😂❤❤ love you AudioPilz!!!!! fantastic as always 😊

I started out making acid sounding techno, rave music when I got into using a daw which was acid pro back in 99/2000. I was dumb to analog gear other than guitars and pedals back then. But a few years later I considered getting one of these or one of the mk2 versions. Wish I would have now. Used to see all kinds of old analog stuff in pawn shops in the 90s for low prices too. 😮‍💨
