In this video you will see a couple of features and limitations of Korg Electribe ES-1 mk2. It is not a complete 'how to' video but you can still find some neat tricks in it. There is also a performance at the end.
If you wish to skip the tutorial part and jump straight to performance click ▸ 3:32
The samples I have used are these amazing post-rockers:
▸i am no hero - Sunny days (Underwater Cities) - iamnohero.band...
and the absolutely legendary:
▸Tool - Eon Blue Apocalypse (Lateralus)
HAURU intro animation by Michal Zglinicki.

Back in the early 2000’s I had all 3 of the KORG electribes, don’t know what happened to the green ES-1 but I still use the blue synth to this day with my MPCX and Moog grandmother. Sounds tight!

with one pattern you did close to what another guy took somewhere near 30 patterns to do . and you didn't even used the sliced sample or much of the FX . solid work . my first bit of gear was the green ES-1 ,it's great to write with . some people thrive within limitations , others can't handle it and trade up for something fancy . the original electribe series stack up to a lot of newer smaller gear (volca) . thanks for the great vid and wicked song .

Thank you for your kind words. I completely agree - sometimes the limitations bring the most out of "simple" devices like this sampler. It's quirky but you experiment in different way than let's say when meddling on a MPC.

This gives me a lot of insight on how to really use my ES-1 mkii better. I have since gotten a Digitakt but I believe the Electribe is more user- friendly, especially for a novice like me, and it is also still a great piece of equipment. Thanks!

Maybe one day I will do a quick video on sampling on ES because it is far from intuitive in my opinion. But making songs is crazy fun. Completely different workflow to your ordinary regular sampler.

I had the original green ES & sold it to a friend for $400. While I do not miss the ES b/c I replaced with an MPC1K, I credit the ES with the first beats I ever made. I spent a whole year f$%$ing around with an old DELL running Cubase & a MOTU interface & got nothing done. I got a roland SPD and the korg electibe ES & started making half ass beats in 1 summer. To this day, I swear by the having the right hardware around. I purposely limit myself sometimes to just my roland MV [sequencing/sampling] and my korg EMX [bass/drums] to take me back to summer of 2002. I have ableton/PUSH & other tools but nothing is like grinding it out wih the right groovebox or sampler . . . . . . . . the ES was very limited but forced you to work with what u had & make music. Sometimes, I see an original ER on ebay for $100 & begin to think why not ;-). that unit had unique drum sounds NOT more 808 & 909 sample kits. Those old electibes had a distinct slapback delay.
@LegendaryHAURU

MPC1k is a completely different beast I agree - you can switch your whole music production to this instrument. ES-1 is like a toy in comparison but I still enjoy it as it has a different workflow which brings happy accidents.

I do not understand your first question. As for the second question: check out page 30 of the manual - www.korg.com/us/support/download/manual/1/103/1611/ Es-1 is quite limited in that regard, imagine Windows Paint in the world of graphic design :) You probably could re-record a new sample out of the sliced one if for example you would like to rearrange the original order.

H A U R U yeah it's just a drum machine :/ too bad it won't sample like a Melody or vocals or sequence external synths or be triggered by Ableton. If it could do all that then maybe you could use it for production :/ :/ :/
@LegendaryHAURU
@LegendaryHAURU 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it's a very neat sample based drum machine. The biggest limitations in terms of ES being a true sampler is the 7 sample limit per pattern and the low-fi quality of the WAV files it can hold.

Honestly I have never paid that much attention to getting samples upfront. Most of what I use was bundled with the gear / programms I have bought or I just sampled on the go. That said, here is a cool list compiled by matemi with lots of free stuff to get you started www.theflipsideforum.com/index.php?topic=11431.0 Just do not go all in with the downloading - less stuff is more manageable.

So would you say the workflow is intuitive with the two matrix menus? Any suggestions with setting up sample folders, I’ve read it’s all number naming of 09 samples per 99 sets, or kits? Sounds like a notepad should be around at all times. Lol. Very cool track, very early team sleep sound. Dig it!
@LegendaryHAURU
@LegendaryHAURU 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks you for your compliments, I have been a fan of Chino and co. since the 90'. As for the samples - it has never been a problem from me since I relied on the original storing convention, where the samples where grouped ie. 00-05 kicks, 06-10 snares, 11-15 hi-hats and crashes and so on... Workflow is not that intuitive if you have experience with modern DAWs or MPCs. It is not however bad, just a bit different. In 2019 I would not have chosen this tiny machine as a main sampler due to sample limitations and workflow.

An interesting thing about these is you can install the mk2 firmware on the original. The only difference is the previous wah effect becomes a modded delay. You can do the opposite, but I think most would prefer the modded delay over the wah effect of the original.

Yes it does have an audio thru as well as a knob to adjust the audio in level. You can also process external audio with the audio in button. Great piece of kit that is capable of doing way more than people give it credit for aslong as you know it like the back of your hand and have the patience to think creatively.

Have you got it figured? Sampling through the audio input on the back is relatively straight forward, though it takes some practice to get used to trimming them. I also highly recommend looking into resampling and just a couple of general and unit specific tips and tricks (like setting the master delay to the shortest possible time and kind of using it for compression), to me it really started to shine when I got the hang of that! Also there's a couple of things to keep in mind if you're loading samples onto the machine via smartmedia card (which is the only way to "load" samples into it, instead of directly recording), like that the files need to be named in a specific manner, I believe two digit numbers like 00 up to 99, and the sample rate is 32khz / 16bit, instead of 44khz / 24bit. Best to look up a pdf of the manual, though, because this really is just from the top of my head.
