The words are the best part! It's about a princess who has a contest to choose a husband. They must guess her name to win her. If they guess wrong, they're executed. This song is by an optimistic suitor who wants everyone to stay up all night and help him come up with the correct name. Nessun dorma means 'none shall sleep'. It seems that so many beautiful songs have such silly lyrics, they don't bother translating. Our imaginations work better for such songs.

@@monl28 uhm, no, actually, Nessun dorma is the opening song of the third act. In this the mysterious suitor Calaf has already won the contest, and since the princess doesn´t want to marry him, he offers her a way out of it by having her guess his name: she has time until the next dawn. But nobody seems to know who this guy is! So the princess orders that nobody that night shall sleep until they´ve found out who he is. He, meanwhile, sure of his victory, sings this song, saying that nobody will be able to guess his identity and therefore as soon as the sun rises he will win.

You have such a nice speaking voice you could be a light jazz or late night R&B love songs DJ. Nessun Dorma was written by a conductor named Puccini who lived in the mid-late 1800s and into the early 1920s. You were wise not to pause anywhere throughout the piece. It’s a masterpiece that deserves to be listened to without any interruptions. ❤️

I loved your reaction and the respect you paid to the greatest opera singer who has ever lived (or at least has been recorded!).... all English lyrics to all songs, opera included, can be googled. Since most operas are in Italian or French you can googled how to pronounce names and titles, in the foreign language of your choice. Pavarotti's Ave Maria--- when he was young, singing it to the Pope as well as later in life.... the Three Tenors is fun too Keep it up, I truly enjoy you.

I have a musician friend who played cello when Placido Domingo sang in La Traviata, an opera by Verdi. I asked him, after watching Freddie Mercury sing with Monserrat Caballe, if Freddie with lots of training could have made it in opera. He acknowledged Freddie's immense gifts, but opera is a whole other level. Basically, he said that if Freddie had started training when he was 10, and trained for 20 years, he might have been able to make it in the chorus.

You didn't butcher his name at all mate, just a bit of fine tuning and you are there...the 'c' in Luciano is pronounced as you would pronounce the letter 'c; in 'cheese', not as in 'sea'...enjoyed your reaction immensely, opera can be so rewarding, break yourself gently into it and see where it takes you...why notnext try Freddie Mercury's operatic partner in crime, Montserrat Caballe with 'O Mio Babbino Caro'...its by the same composer, Puccini (again, think cheese ;) )

"No one sleeps" is what 'nessun dorma' means. Saw him live at the NYC Met Opera in 1994 in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. His acting was supreme, and his singing was out of this world. He was so magical, and it wasn't even him at his "peak". (Supposedly he was at his best in the late '70s and early '80s when there is very little film or recording evidence, unfortunately. There is some out there, though, and you should go listen to it. It will astound you.) Please watch the video of him singing 'Cesti La Giubba' from Pagliacci - "put on the vestments" (of a clown.) It is incredible, and available on KZbin. His acting plus voice will break your heart, and the quality of the video is outstanding. The thing about Luciano as he got older - his soul and his life experiences seemed to leak into his voice (he lived life to its fullest and had many heartbreaks and challenges), and he literally could break hearts with his voice, even as fine-eared technical experts pooh-poohed a little, as his whole voice and persona gave way to a flood of recognizable humanity. At the end of Nessun Dorma, he sings "I will win. I will win. I will win." He sure did!!! Even if you don't want to do reviews of the videos I've suggested, I think you would truly enjoy viewing them (they aren't very long; arias are short because they are so demanding of the singer, and were composed to sing live) and it will help you understand the man and, perhaps more importantly - the music - at a deeper level. It was Pavarotti's passion to bring opera to the people, and it will enrich your life. I promise.

Yes, generally sung in the language written--Italian here--although in the past it wasn't uncommon to perform them in translation. Opera was an Italian art form first, so of course many of the most famous operas are in Italian. then then spread throughout Europe and more languages, including English. Live performances now have supertitle translations of the words (the "libretto") overhead. I find it distracting from the performance on stage, though. I'd rather read a synopsis and then just sink into the experience of the sound and mastery.

I agree, having the lyrics onscreen doesn't help. Opera isn't about the words, it's about the sounds they make, and the lyrics tend not to be any sort of great literature. You don't need to know what "vincero" means to hear the triumph in Pavarotti's voice.

You just experience the voice of the BEST opera singer in modern history. Period. Master Pavarotti makes you feel every inch of emotion every time. An opera song is called an "aria" and they are usually composse in italian because most compossers preffer it or where from Italy. Please don´t let it be your last opera reaction, it is an incredible world. Most reactor only make this one, but theres so much more, please keep the opera reactions as well as any other. I can recommend you by Luciano Pavaroti his version of "Vesti la Giuba", "La Donna e mobile" or "Ave Maria". And also the "Three Tenors" version of "O Sole Mio" that one is hilarius, and beatuful at the same time, and you have the best, Master Luciano Pavatori, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras sing this one aria. I hope you make them some day.

One thing that's easy to forget in the flow of music is that this is also just as much an athletic performance as any Olympic gymnast. Every movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, neck, and body is deliberate and practiced for a lifetime. Each breath is planned and executed to fit the needs of the next phrase and is sometimes used to swell a note up or down. This isn't raw talent you're hearing. It's the result of years of learning and practice. Pavarotti sang like an F1 rider drives a motorcycle - flawless and so smooth it looks easy.

What always blows me away about Pavarotti is how anyone can tell, just from the first note, how brilliant his voice is. Every single reaction video I've seen (and I'm slightly addicted to them) has had that "whoa" from the second he opens his mouth. Something about the power, beauty and control he will go on to show throughout the song is audible immediately, even if (like me) your ear is totally untrained. For him to start from such a high point, and then just keep escalating, is truly astonishing.

Over the years, I've listened to this masterpiece thousands of times, and each and every time brings tears, that's the truth. A bit of advice: take the time to read a brief synopsis of "Turandot", try to get the English words so you can understand his words, then you'll understand the meaning of the chorus, for example. I guarantee you won't be sorry. Love it so much will request it as my final aria at my funeral.

I fell in love with Luciano Pavarotti over 40 years ago and have been addicted to opera ever since. The English lyrics to this song are beautiful, I trust you have looked them up by now. This is the 2nd concert with the 3 Tenors, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Pavarotti. The first concert they performed together was at Caracalla, and ancient ruin in Rome, whereby chance they sang under a full moon. Now I'm a diehard opera fan and have been fortunate enough to attend many performances in Seattle. I recommend starting with more lighthearted operas like The Barber of Seville, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, then go on to Carmen, LaTraviata, Madame Butterfly, etc., and they all come with English subtitles on a screen above the stage. 🍃🌹💎 I will answer your questions: 🍃🌹I'm Italian and sang in full opera productions in my youth ~ until I became unable to even speak at times due to severe Asthma. "Opera" means "Life" in Italian. That is why all except for this opera, written by the Immortal Giacomo Puccini, the lead actors die at the end. It was Puccini himself who died while writing this opera Turnandot. It is set in China. "Turn-ah-nn-doe-t-ah" The Great conductor Arturo Tuscanini (Tusk-ah-nee-nee) laid his conductor's baton down on the last note Puccini wrote. The Greatest Opera House in the world "La Scala" went silent in unspoken prayer 🍃🌹 After a pause to remember this now immortal man, Tuscanini finished the opera. Only possible by using music Puccini had written in the earlier parts of the opera. "The city sleeps... under the stars... We will have victory at dawn." Luciano sings the words "Victory! Victory! Victory!" 3x's ending the aria (or song). Bless you for enjoying this now immortal man Luciano Pavarotti. Dying in 2007 before his 72nd birthday of pancreatic cancer. 🍃🌹💎 His name is pronounced Loo-chee-ah-no (know) P-ah-vah-rrr (roll the R) awe-tee 🍃🌹💎 Nesun Dorma Nnn-eh-soon-door-mm-ah 🍃🌹💎

That's not what it's about. It's about a cold Princess name Turandot (from the opera by the same name) who doesn't want to marry, so she sets a challenge that any man who wants her hand must answer three riddles correctly, but if he fails he'll be beheaded. Preceding this song, Luciano's character Calaf is the only one to answer all the riddles correctly, but even after that Turandot still doesn't want to marry him, so Calaf tells her that if she can discover his name before dawn, she can behead him, but if not, she must marry him. In this song Calaf sings about his assurance of his victory ('Vincero! Vincero!'), while the choir are all the Princess's servants that she sends out to try discover his name before the sun rises, knowing they will all be beheaded if they fail.

I too think it cool that LP sang with quite a number of singers out of his genre. I've seen several of those and enjoyed them. I saw him with James Brown, wow, what a combination. They did JB's "It's a Man's World". Stunning! He also sang "Too Much Love Will Kill You" with Brian May. I think it is great that LP was willing to bring opera to the masses in a way we can relate to. No matter what he sings it becomes opera. He can't help it it is who he is and it's great. I would love to have seen Luciano Pavarotti sing with Freddie Mercury. Freddie loved the opera world, all the costumes, gorgeous music, and dramatics. What is not FM about that? FM did sing a whole album with Monsaratt Caballe, famous Spanish opera star. Freddie admired her so much and loved the opportunity to sing with her. There are several videos of them singing songs from their album "Barcelona" available online. Check them out if you like goosebumps.

I have just discovered your channel, and I am so glad I did. For the past two hours I was going through your reactions, and I love your sincerity and unpretentiousness. I love the bands you covered so far, but I am also a great opera fan. I was both excited and surprised to see you reacted to Pavarotti, since I wasn't expecting it, at all :) Your love for music is so wonderful and time after time I enjoy listening to you and your ability to transfer what you're experiencing while listening. I have watched dozens of reaction videos to opera, and I am confident saying that there are a handful of you who spontaneously mentioned the composer and musicians. Dear Jarrett, you are a real deal! I was certain I will give you a suggestion for the next reaction from the pool of rock, hard rock stuff, but since you entered the opera dimension and Pavarotti waters... There is only one more video I would appreciate you watching, either privately or by sharing your reaction with us. The aria is short, and it beautifully invites you to the opera world and the emotion this world offers. The performance is live with English translation, and Pavarotti is simply unreal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKu4e2t-m5Wbo5Y Cheers

My dear you pronounced his name correctly. I want to thank you for the respect you showed to a man the was considered to be the greatest Tenor to have ever lived. If I might also say as a legally blind person. Voices are a thing for us. We tune into them. You my dear have a lovely calming and trusting voice. Makes me feel safe and secure. I would say I have heard two wonderful voices. One that touches the soul. The other reassuring that everything is alright. Well done.

The story makes it even more meaningful. He is trying to win a princess (Tirandot) whose conditions are riddles that stipulate no one sleeps, or they die... to win her hand. He is the hero, who sings "no one sleeps", and the last three words are victory, victory, victory. With the sunrise, he shall win her love. And he does.

Operas are always performed in the original language, here Italian, sometimes German, French or Russian. There exist some operas in English, from Henry Purcel, George Gershwin or Benjamin Britten. Bernsteins West Side Story is almost an opera. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oICscpxojdyojdE

how is this so powerful that his voice tells me a story even in a language I can't understand? Goosebumps is exactly what happens. There is something about it that immerses itself in my subconscious mind and by-passes my reasoned thinking. That's a reason I'll never need to translate the words. They tell me the story anyway

He deserves nd credit for doing duets with various artists for charity I think he did a few albums but Freddie Mercury and Montsarat Cabelle were the first to do an opera cross over and he was very critical of them five years later he embraced the idea and used the collaborations to raise money for charities which is a good thing but it's a shame he wasn't more supportive of them when they did it

Thank you for giving Opera a chance. It can be spectacular, but like anything, there are many arias (songs) that you or I or others won't like, just like in any genre. But yes, you have to train like mad to be able to sing like this and he was older doing this, you should hear him singing this in his youth, Its even more spectacular. This was Italian. Giacomo Puccini wrote this Opera, Turandot, and this aria or as you would say song, is Nessun Dorma. Puccini's best known operas are La Boheme, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. La Boheme's story was used as the template for the musical Rent and the film Moulin Rouge. He always wrote his opera's in Italian. British and American Opera composers did their's in English, etc etc. Actually you would already know a very famous Aria from an American Opera by Gershwin. It's been turned into jazz and pop and r&b etc etc. The song/aria "Summertime". That was originally from an Opera called Porgy and Bess.

Nessun dorma (Let no one sleep) is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot (1926) and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. Any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. In the aria, Calaf expresses his triumphant assurance that he will win. The Italian words are: Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Tu pure, o Principessa, nella tua fredda stanza, guardi le stelle che tremano d'amore, e di speranza! Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me; il nome mio nessun saprà! No, No! Sulla tua bocca, lo dirò quando la luce splenderà! Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio che ti fa mia! Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba, vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò! --------------------------- Here are the words in English: None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Not even you, oh Princess, in your cold bedroom, watching the stars that tremble with love, and with hope! But my secret is hidden within me; no one will know my name! No, no! On your mouth, I will say it when the light shines! And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! Vanish, o night! Fade, you stars! Fade, you stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
