Since version 1.2 (Rule book), you can Kill one of your people & change it for one in your hand. Each column can contain a maximum of 2 people. New in v1.2: If you have no space in any of your columns, you may play a person but you must first destroy one of your existing people.

Question, can you move a person up or down a column if they are injured (damaged)?

Yes. A person can be upright or turned and you can move people in front of or behind them.
