At 6:20 that is a shop home made forged hand made link by your Grandpa. Those longer bigger links may be home made also... You need more practice on using bolt cutters.

I am trying to determine what the purpose of this video is. "How to wreck Grandpa's excellent logging chain in one KZbin video." If the old links are still on the chain, then they are not broken. If they are not broken, they do not need to be fixed. The test of these old tools is not what we "think" they should be, but whether or not they survive actual field use. I, too, have old logging chains that I use while logging hardwoods, that are full of all kinds of repair and quick links. I would not dream of removing them unless they were severely bent or damaged. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But the allure of beating on metal for KZbin is pretty strong...

Remind me NEVER to use any of your chains! And just an FYI we ended up throwing most of that pathetic excuse of chain away when I was done with this video!

@@radozeman I would not expect you to do any of the heavy and dirty work that I do in the woods, let alone use any of my chains. I am only sitting inside now because I am waiting for the rain to pass, and then I am off to skid logs using chains that you say are no good but which have worked fine for fifty years and which probably have another fifty years in them. KZbin has bred a culture of clueless know-it-alls who post utter nonsense in the hopes of being perceived as an expert. It is really an unbelievable sign of where America has gone (downward). You should get outside and actually use/ test those old chains before declaring them unfit. But hey, why not just post a KZbin video, it is easier...

@JAC 08 two comments in a year's time is not hovering. I do believe in the usefulness of a substantive debate, and so I will comment when I have time. I don't mock people, because that is weak. Last year marked one whole year I ran an ad in our local technology college's forestry program. I offered to take on a couple paid interns for the summer, and teach them how to select and safely fell and buck trees, skid logs, saw the logs on the sawmill, and grade the lumber they produced. Out of all the forestry students in that program, not one applied. None applied to any of the other local mills, either, nor to any of the heavy construction businesses in the area. General consensus among us older guys is your generation is not worth spit. You don't know how to work, you don't care to work, you don't value work, and you will give away America to whoever wants to take it because fighting for her is just too hard. Civilizations come and go, and while my age group built this country better and stronger than it was when we were little kids, your age group is sitting on your ass, posting ridiculous videos on line and posing as experts, while America burns to the ground. Good luck, idiots

exactly! and never underestimate an old logging chain because it "looks" old. If it functions, then it is not in need of repair. Jiminiy crickets! I am a roll on this youtube video, because it really symbolizes so much about youtube, the people who post on it, and the people who comment on the posts. anyhow, i will be logging today with my old rusty chains that all these keyboard experts say are junk....

@pamtnman pamtnman OSHA would probably seize every chain you have and ban you from having any. Links of chain must be removed, or whole tackle discarded, if the links are worn past the maximum allowable limit. Especially if it's used in overhead tackle. Cold shuts and other type links are not recommended for high grade chain. These types of connecting links are limited to light light duty. Jim fixed chains, like the one in the video, are on grounds for scrapping.

Bryan, that chain is very very far from whipped. I use a whole pile of chains while logging, and a chain is only "whipped" when the links are corroded AND bent AND cracked. The test for a chain's functionality is not how it looks, all rusty and gnarly, but how it functions in the woods, for example. Chain is expensive, but not when I buy used ones from people who tell me "You can have this chain, it is totally whipped."
