Sadly that is how the story goes. The baritone never gets the girl!!! Which I think is unfair as I can name a lot more great baritones than than tenors. But there you go. By the way after Verdi finished the opera he said all it needed to be well performed was the 4 best singers in the world. He is a fantastic baritone and she is also a very good Leonora

Sondra Radvanovsky is a great singer. I herad her Tosca last year at the Met.Her Vissi D'Arte was a great piece of singing. The voice has similarities to a number of singers: Rosalind Plowright, some overtones are reminiscent of Callas and Souliotis, and there is a touch of Gheorghiu in the sound. With virtues come some imperfections similar to those singers. Now about Dmitri Hvorostovsky. His is a lyrical baritone and I lack here bite that was there with his Italian predecessors.

This duet has to have one of the most over-the-top lyrics in opera when Leonora sings: "Uccide me, svena me, beve il sangue mio, calpesta il mio cadavere, ma salva il trovatore" "Kill me, strangle me, drink my blood, abuse my corpse, but save the troubadour." The essence of operatic melodrama. Just great!

Just listen to this recording from time to time and compare the duet with other versions as they become available; then you will know even better why Igor Krutoy said of Hvorostovsky after he passed away "There was no one like him". Here he is perfectly matched in vocal quality and temperament with Radvanovsky. Maestro, can it be almost two years since you joined the choirs of heaven? R.I.P., Maestro, the whole world misses you.
