Great interview! I get the feeling you could re-interview all the pilots and navigators you've had on this channel and they'd all have details and insights into their careers just as fascinating as their first interview. That Ian went from nav to pilot feels like a triumph for the little guy and especially those of us that have only ever strapped into a fast jet via virtual reality. If I had a wishlist for the future of this channel, a North Vietnamese MiG pilot or an Iraqi MiG pilot from Operation Desert Storm!

Hi fellas, I have a ???? I have the impression that navigators in the RAF receive fundamental pilot training in the trainers such as the Chipmunk and this is not the case in the USAF. Am I correct????? Actually, as a retired theorectical math guy were I fifty years younger and the RAF gave navigators fundamental flying skills I'd likely seek G.B. citizenship and leave the States to be a RAF navigator because the way I see it is they do the really interesting stuff.

I don't understand why such dangerous hazing of a visiting foreign pilot; maybe it stems from a chip-on-shoulder inferiority complex. Robin Olds bio reported the same thing when guest of a UK fighter group in 1950s; a near suicidal initial formation flight in an unfamiliar aircraft in rainclouds. BTW his riveting bio gives an idea for little known dramas in Viet Nam war. Interview tanker pilots who were forbidden to refuel in certain dangerous or inconvenient areas. When Olds F4 squad was on fumes there, he would seriously brandish his sidewinders at reluctant KC-135s. For a tanker who willingly refueled against orders, he saved them from court martial only by awarding them a silver star.

Consistently seems like Mirage pilots who flew something else all have A fairly negative view of it, particularly the lack of power. The exception being the Israeli variant with an American engine. French engines suck arse apparently.
