I spent a couple of months fixing all the communal lighting on the estate behind the museum shown in the first bit of footage and kept saying to myself that if I get an early finish, I'll pop in and have a look. I never did get an early finish and didn't get a chance to visit so thanks for doing this, don't feel like I've missed out now.

Fantastic vid Matt. That Eurofighter is the real thing. Built 1993, first flight 6th April 1994. First British built Typhoon. Flew only as a trials aircraft, initially with RB199 engines (as in Tornado) but later with EF200s. Last flight 29th January 2007. Total flying time 614hrs 44mins. Arrived at Hendon in January 2008 and suspended in the Milestone of Flight Hall, replacing the plastic mock-up previously on display. RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK.
@SuperAshai
@SuperAshai Жыл бұрын
The aircraft's development effectively began in 1983 with the Future European Fighter Aircraft programme, a multinational collaboration among the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Previously, Germany, Italy and the UK had jointly developed and deployed the Panavia Tornado combat aircraft and desired to collaborate on a new project, with additional participating EU nations. However disagreements over design authority and operational requirements led France to leave the consortium to develop the Dassault Rafale independently. A technology demonstration aircraft, the British Aerospace EAP, first flew on 6 August 1986; a Eurofighter prototype made its maiden flight on 27 March 1994. The aircraft's name, Typhoon, was adopted in September 1998 and the first production contracts were also signed that year.

39:24 The Caudron G3 My grandfather flew those. I've a photograph of a group of them sitting on and standing in front of them. There's one still flying in up state new york. What's interesting is the throttle is on the outside of the cockpit so in the event of a crash the mechanics could turn the engine off. The other interesting bit, there are no ailerons. It using wing warping like the Wright brother's flyer. That its also interesting as to why they did that and not the far simpler hinge arrangement.

Great stuff Matt. My Dad did his training there toward the end of WW2. Had many visits there with him when he was alive and he said that the Hudson was positioned almost exactly the Sameplace that he did an engine change on one all those years ago. That hanger is a great example of the original WW1 wooden construction. Got some hangers up near me from the former RAF Bracebridge heath which are the same and still in use. Looks like the Museum has changed a fair bit since I last went a few years back.

Avro Heritage site at the former factory in Woodford Stockport is a great place to visit they have a Vulcan outside and a cockpit to go into inside along with other air craft built there including a mini version of the Vulcan to test the delta wing shape and fly by wire systems . i lived in the hills over looking the factory and they flow over regularly as kid . it was 5 miles away and the the sounds of a engine test could be clearly heard even louder when all 4 were going

A quick Google tells you all you need to know about the Typhoon Matt. It was the very first one produced by the British in 1993. First flew in 1994, but was mainly used for test flights, never saw active service. Last flight was in 2007, with only 615 flying hours on the clock. The coincidence here is that when it arrived at the museum it replaced the plastic replica that was previously on display at the museum. So it's the real deal, but it replaced a replica.

the plane at 23' has what was referred to as a toothpick and was supposed to limit tip over on landing. in practice it made things worse according to Eric "Winkle" Brown. The red jet at 9' is a Folland Gnat as it is mid wing and was used by the Red Arrows. It was later replaced by the Hawk which is low wing. The Frank Whittle Jet engine has combustion cans which are the tanks. Front is a centrifugal compressor which passes into the Combustion Can referred to as canannular combusters. The fuel and air is mixed here and ignited before passing through to the Power Turbine. The move to axial compressors meant the cans were moved in line inside the casing between the compressor and the power turbine.

@@TheSecretVault thanks for the feedback Matt, I have visted Hendon several times and the one thing that has stuck with me was the bomb thats was used to take an airfield out of service. This would have three main bombs, cluster bombs or scatter bombs as well as scatter mines. The mines would be of three different types. Some with delays some go of with vibrations and some triggered in the typical fashion by contact. What disturbed me most was that someone has actually sat down and thought about this and not just some disgruntled fireworks technician either!

The Blue Streak was tested on the Isle of Wight, but the missile on display is a Blue Steel. The red aircraft hanging from the roof is a Gnat that was used by the Red Arrows before the Hawk. Those "radial" engines are actualy "rotary", as the whole engine spins around !
