I think this is one of the few videos that really shows off the brute power of these machines. Still one of the nicest looking jets.

Yes , the Typhoon is a wonderful aircraft, but there is something special about the magnificent Tornado.

When they were operated in Afghan, they didn’t need to launch any missiles, as a low ‘show of force’ used to scare the bad people and shake to buildings to the ground, so a win.

One of the loudest military aircraft I've heard when they performed at the Bicentennial Airshow in Richmond AB in 1988 Australia

I used to go to school between RAF Kinross and RAF Lossiemouth and the Tornado was by far the loudest plane. It used to shake the windows. Clearly see why it was named the Tornado.

Lovely video, no afterburner on uk military, thats a yank thing! Called reheat here, a Tonka never took off without reheat, hence the reheat was always tested on engine run-up (the sometimes failed to ignite then takeoff was abandoned)

That plane is such a unit. It can start with an all around weight of 28 tons. Without anything on it, it already weighs around 14 tons.

Used to holiday near RAF St mawgan in Cornwall which had these monsters Stationed you could hear them firing up at 7.30am we where roughly 2-3 miles from the runway but when those burners kicked in best sound ever. Also got treated to low level fly overs through the valley especially when with USAF F15 and F16's where there on training as young lad it was nirvana

What exactly does great mean though? More Tornados? I mean it depends how you define great. Culture/Identity(pretty good still generally, though of course there’s the political identity crisis which affects everyone unfortunately), Empire?, that wouldn’t be a popular one I don’t think, military strength(some issues definitely need sorting and funding but generally these things eventually get solved, e.g systems get replaced, training improves etc, and even then UK is still a top 5-10 power), standard of living(probably as high as it will be typically, so this really comes into how you define great). But more aircraft is definitely a good idea so cool.

I wonder if the 1960's QE-class carriers had been build, if we'd have been a naval version of the Tornado.

Wow, welcome to 2020 when KZbin actually recommends stuff I would have watched years ago. Are these the dual engine, one for high and one for low speeds or are these the proper tornado?
@THE-BUNKEN-DRUM3 жыл бұрын
The proper Tornado? :-/ Well...it's not the windy kind, if that's what you mean. Unless you're standing behind it, that is.

How do they manage to retract the undercarriage so quickly after leaving the ground - is it an automatic system?
@ukfriendtoall7435 Жыл бұрын
No, not automatic…. But some crews ‘pre select’ AC up, and as soon as the aircraft is off the ground the safety WOW switch allows up selection. WOW = weight on wheels
