Cole's mental. Look at his press conferences from a few years ago: they're like therapy sessions. He's let Devers into his head - he invited him into his head because he needs someone like Devers in his head because Cole lives in his head. If there wasn't a Devers, he'd invent him. Most very good pitchers have a guy like Devers who has their number and most of them shrug it off and go after the rest of the league. It's professional sports; i.e., you can't beat everyone. Cole's in Cole's head. It's really his only weakness.

@@dajepson it happens nearly 10 times a season (on average; and obviously in baseball, especially, there are outliers), lots of guys do it to set up double plays if they are contact pitchers. sure there's some background to this because he hits a lot off Cole but that just makes it make more sense. Why would you risk a HR when you can make it into an innings-ending double play? Didn't work out for Cole but it does more than you probably even realize
