@@vijayla21um not really. Nadal beat Stan just 2 months ago in straights at indoor atp finals and also completely demolished Stan in all their other meetings. And idk if you know, but just a couple months prior nadal had the best hard court season of his life where he was unbeatable against djokovic and Federer. I would not say that Stan could’ve “clearly” beat nadal had they both been healthy

@@vijayla21 ok. Rafa himself said that this match hurt him mentally for the longest time as he was not able to compete at his whole, which supports your argument that we would not know what happened had that back injury not happened. The back injury also caused him to start playing more passively, leading to worse performances against Federer and djokovic except on clay for the rest of his career

Not sure why people are downplaying Wawrinka's win here by saying Nadal was injured. The first set he was fine and Stan outperformed him. His level was too high. I don't blame the crowd booing Nadal when he came back from a long time off court after that 1st set either, Nadal took many injury timeouts in the first few years of his career only to go on and win the match comfortably. This time, he really did have an injury.

The key to why the big three were so tough to beat is because the opponent often had to peak for three sets to get it done. And the mental pressure to get it done when they are ahead has made more than a few falter. So while Stan played amazingly and really cemented his quality after the RG win, it's hard to say whether he would have been able to win this one against an unimpeded Rafa.

Nadal’s back injury here was the end of his prime. He was never the same, he won RG but his clay season overall was so much worse than previous years. Then he missed the US Open and his form collapsed completely The way Stan played in the 1st set I think he might well have beaten Nadal anyway, but their overall H2H makes it hard to be certain. Nadal came back from losing 1st sets at that AO already. But Stan was hitting so hard

The whole "Rafa was injured" excuse doesn't fly with me. If you're really injured you shouldn't be playing. If you play injured don't use it as an excuse for losing because you obviously still played believing you could win injured. You can't have it both ways - take extra credit for winning injured but use it as an excuse for losing.

Nadal in this match was supposed to be the youngest player to ever win the double career grand slam at the age of 27 which would've made him the undisputed greatest player of all time but unfortunately fate turned on him and he suffered a back injury in the warmup before the final which got progressively worse as the match went on. This was without a doubt the most painful defeat of Nadal's entire career and he was never the same player again.

Djokovic changed the game in 2011. Hitting it deep constantly, painting the lines, down the line from both wings, impeccable drop shots and seamlessly changing directions was the norm now. Rafa didn't polish his game. He stayed poor in changing direction, and hitting it deep.
