Not sure why people are downplaying Wawrinka's win here by saying Nadal was injured. The first set he was fine and Stan outperformed him. His level was too high. I don't blame the crowd booing Nadal when he came back from a long time off court after that 1st set either, Nadal took many injury timeouts in the first few years of his career only to go on and win the match comfortably. This time, he really did have an injury.

The key to why the big three were so tough to beat is because the opponent often had to peak for three sets to get it done. And the mental pressure to get it done when they are ahead has made more than a few falter. So while Stan played amazingly and really cemented his quality after the RG win, it's hard to say whether he would have been able to win this one against an unimpeded Rafa.

Nadal’s back injury here was the end of his prime. He was never the same, he won RG but his clay season overall was so much worse than previous years. If you play injured don't use it as an excuse for losing because you obviously still played believing you could win injured.
