I had the same problem with a pole barn that I bought. The damage was caused by someone without roofing knowledge or being cheap. They didn’t use a starter strip when they roofed it. Did a lot of damage. I fixed it myself. Did a lot of research an a lot or procrastinating before I fixed the problem. Then I struck a chalk line, then I cut 2 foot of the roofing and sheeting off with a circular saw. Ripped it off, sister the 2 by 4’s with screws1 foot on the outside and 2 foot on the inside. Used the 2 to 1 ratio on the size of 2 by 4’s. I did cut the ugly parts off of the old 2 by 4’s. Turn out real nice. His example shows that it can be done with a little work. Just do the research and figure out the best practice way to do it..

My house has faux rafter tails. What’s the purpose of having faux as opposed to simply having a slightly longer rafter with a tail? Does it protect the Main roof rafters from getting rotted by the elements? Does it make the rafters slightly stronger by not spanning such a great distance?
@dekonfrost7 Жыл бұрын
Honestly… it’s something you would beed to describe better or post a link to a pic. Some are extended with a triangle, like french construction to extend the eves, some are merely extensions because the original modern built 75’ or later homes had eves that used to ice dam. So there are many scenarios with which this could be.
@mikezaloudek30118 жыл бұрын
The trusses are at an angle, do you cut the top of the fascia at a slight angle also? If not how do you keep the plywood from turning up at the edge slightly? I suppose you could drop it down 1/4". Wish you could have shown that part. Thanks for the video.
@dekonfrost78 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. For low slope like 1/4" of fall per foot like this video I simply pull it back a bit until there is a void between why would made a angle between the front of the fascia and slope of the roof. You could also let it pass by a little here because the drip edge would cover it. On steep slope roofing like 12/12" or greater I often dress the top edge of the fascia like you suggest. It makes for an awesome job and if you have a portable table saw is a relatively easy task. Albeit time consuming. Thanks for watching

The fact is that the biggest thing is that the paper go all the way to the eve as close to perfect as possible. To evacuate water that gets behind shingles best as possible.

While it would probably be a good idea (certainly not a bad one) to remove the rotted wood, Its important to realize that rot (which is a fungal growth) requires moisture to thrive and grow. The spores that seed rot are everywhere. The key to keeping wood from rotting is keeping it below a certain moisture content. There is no such thing as 'dry-rot' in regards to wood. It is a misnomer. This is not to say, 'yes leave all that rotted wood', only to clarify the mechanism of decay so it can be properly guarded against.
@logmeindangit11 ай бұрын
You're quite right. Calling wood that has decayed due to prolonged exposure to excessive moisture, "dry rot" is very misleading, and a better descriptor should be adopted by us all. "Wet rot" is correct. For fun, calling it, "Got damp rot" would at least give a chuckle to a carpenter having to repair the damage. My next quest is to get people to stop calling sublimation* of water in frozen foods, "freezer burn." Nothing was burned, it was just extremely dehydrated because it was not sealed well enough in a modern freezer that has a frost-free feature. That feature keeps the humidity in the freezer so low that the ice actually evaporates, so that it never builds up to the point where it has to be defrosted to remove it, like in freezers of half a century or more ago. *Sublimation: This is when a substance changes phases from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid in between. Tungsten, and some other metals with high melting points, can be heated to glowing in a vacuum, and will evaporate without melting. As they so, they radiate away their precious solid state as though melting and evaporating, and the metal "gas" radiates away from the hot source to land on whatever object is in the line-of-sight and is cooler. For fun, and a little science knowledge, do a web search for "tungsten sublimation pump." It is used as one step in creating a very low pressure in a vacuum chamber. Freezer burn. Pushaw. Dry rot. Nonsense! Military intelligence? Next time...

Water may back up into rafter again. Wouldn't it be wise to use pressure treated wood for the sistered rafter end, fascia and plywood edge? Yes it's a little extra money but in this country the cost of labor is horrendous and would justify its use.
@dekonfrost77 жыл бұрын
Treated lumber is for whennyou know that it will experience water. A properly built roof protects the framing from water. So I treated lumber wouldn't help here. The cost of highly skilled labor in America is the culmination of years spent in the craft and continual reinvestment in tooling and development of future generations of building. Competition makes these costs fair to consumers who wish to find good work at a competitive cost.

stanley siewierski ^ to add to that it depends on the wood itself, if your lucky and are in an area you can get cedar boards they will last a lifetime kept dry! The barn we have was built in the 20s the wood still looks almost new it's a mix of cedar pine and hardwoods depending on the feature your looking at, and the wood still looks brand new even in the weather damaged spot once you get past the damaged area on the door (door corner broke so it has some rot from the unpainted wood being exposed, because of how that was built it's an easy fix just have to pop a couple of the boards off and replace them) the interior of the rest of the doors look AMAZING still you'd never guess it was almost 100 off the look or condition of the wood on it (the concrete is a different matter entirely it's busted up pretty good lol)

Well done job, I live in Brazil, and I would like to make a roof like this in my house, and I would like to know, what is the minimum distance that should leave between the ceiling and the OSB, thanks in advance

The most important thing in this video was how to fix the rafter tail and you just skipped through it
@Heavyglare6 жыл бұрын
What happened to the rafter tails? Did you just attach to the rotted ones? Why did you go from start to finished without showing the middle which was the important part to me for watching this video...
@dekonfrost76 жыл бұрын
+Heavyglare Eyewear I'm sorry the video skipped that part. I've gotten a lot of criticism about it. But the fact is that I made this video as a point of interest, why something should be a certain way and not another. Rafter tails and bird mouth cuts ... I could make a series on them. And I've compiled a lot more videos since this video on the subject. But as I'm a working tradesman I find myself short on time to share it. If you have any questions I'll find time to answer them as soon as I can and as detailed as possible
@dekonfrost76 жыл бұрын
+Heavyglare Eyewear the simple fact of the matter is that this video explains the importance of having the roof decking lay securely on the fascia. With a fair amount of forensics, as to why the roof sheathing failed. You always should cut out as much rotten wood as you can. If you can't get it all but you cut off the supply of water then the framing will be just fine. I'm sorry I haven't had much time to make more of these videos. Please stay tuned unmade some more detailed videos this summer. This time I'll try and edit them better.

If by chance the rafter has rotted into the gusset area, is there a fix for that? Will email a photo, to get your opinion.

Oh dear, What does "Ballon Fran" mean?
@dekonfrost78 жыл бұрын
I apologize for the poor spell check. When the rot reaches the gussets or plates you need to replace that rafter.or at least add the strength back into the roof by adding a rafter back into the roof or by framing a new balloon framed rafter in place. Please research balloon framing. It means to frame from within an existing building envelope. A hassle but easily accomplished if the roof is open and being replaced. 3/4" or 1/2" plywood makes a good gusset as long as you use glue and some nails.

I'm not a carpenter so any comment is impractical overkill I'm sure. What was the situation that caused this? Would it be worthwhile to paint the end parts of the rafter tails, at least the end grain? Would it be worthwhile to angle the top edge of the fascia to fit tight against the plywood sheathing, maybe even caulk the joint when you put it together? BTW, which do you nail in first, the fascia or the plywood?
@bigpardner4 жыл бұрын
Very nice video. now I know what that area looks like.

Well what species of wood are your rafters made from? Sap wood 🌲? I bet not. Glad to hear how a totally dissimilar-structure doesn’t benefit from my explanation. I wonder if your building was made entirely of concrete or steel framing if you would have been ridiculous enough to comment.
@BlueGamerDude5 жыл бұрын
@@dekonfrost7 its made from pine i would say. All it needs is some paint and it will last. Pine is also rotressistant. Sap wood or heart wood doesnt matter on pine
@dekonfrost75 жыл бұрын
BlueGamer Dude might want to do some more reading. More then pine. And your lumber ist heartwood. Not sapwood. But thats why you are here to become educated

Drip edge? Flashing? There was a cause for all this rot. It is called water. If the water is allowed to leak in or wick back to the lumber, you get rot. Fix the underlying cause.

Why oh why did they ever do away with planks for the roof sheeting??! The older homes all had planks. Moving sheets of OSB sucks and you have to pull back the roof farther if you ever half to replace anything. Another example of the old timers doing it better.
@dekonfrost78 жыл бұрын
The simple fact of things is this. There are 7 billion people who need housing. And the osb provides a strong durable substrate for a roof, if installed correctly. Even the Mona Lisa is falling apart.

He didn't cut them off he left the rotten moldy wood inside the structure so the slightest moisture intrusion will cause huge blooms poisoning the inhabitants and causing the rot to jump straight in to the shiney new sister tails.

Keep the camera still while you're talking since it's nauseating to watch handheld video, and do alot more editing to keep on point (remove the rambling talk and jumble of video shots).
