Rafter Ties Are Done! Started Installing OSB On The Roof!

I finally go the rafters done and began installing OSB on the roof. It went fast and I felt safe doing it. It's supposed to rain in the morning but I'm hoping I can get the roof on before it gets too wet...

You can be very proud of yourself. But even if you have done this for a long time you still need a safety strap . My father in law use to be a builder . When he was building one of our schools he fell off the roof and broke his back. That ended his building. Please don't let that happen to you. Peayers for your safety.

I get a bit of a chuckle every time I watch these second story vids. Only asking for help when there is a situation where you absolutely cannot do it on your own without killing yourself. After I get to watch myself in one of your vids... I get to come down here and look at the comments from people that will never be able to do anything on heir own and relying on a credit card. It's a great way to spend time with my morning cup of coffee. With that said... You could take that backhoe and build a pad to get the bucket up to the roof. Keep up the excellent work. Good luck. I applaud your work. There were so many home project I’ve done without outside help. I couldn’t afford to hire people for many years. I didn’t know how to do it but if figure it out, the rewards for me were wonderful. At sixty eight years old you have in spired me to do it again. I have been enjoying watching all the footage of your homestead progress, and admiring your positive attitude and work ethic. i so wanted to be there helping you on occasions like this one. i would have suggested just tacking a straight batten all along the rafters to simply sit the lower rafter ties onto. This would also have helped with keeping them all horizontally in-line with no risk of them falling... Then just pry it off afterwards. I could feel the frustration you were experiencing. Been there before myself buddy ! Hope you and the family are doing well. Keep going and you will be rewarded with all that self-satisfaction and independence which many of us aspire to ! I agree with many others on open cathedral. Maybe the use of cable instead of lumber to tie the trust. Great job regardless.

I know you've done a lot of research on solar.. But just to remind you.. What you already know... Solar panels put out less power with heat.. So putting them on the roof could cause them to heat up conciderably more... Second.. On the roof it would be hard to adjust the angle of the panels for the north (summer) to south ( summer). (One of the easy summer to winter adjustments i've seen on youtube.. Is to set a plastic cup on the panel face down.. Then tilt the panel until the shadow is the same or gone.. Some readjust 4 times a year..) Or some use automatic trackers.. Depending on wind... Third.. After watching Steve Robertson youtube videos... (Colorado) Even with the angle of the panels... The snow will set on the panels and need to be swept off.... He also has an easy way to get your south facing line for none tracking arrays.. If any of you haven't seen Steve Robertson on youtube He is a retired electrical engineer and been off the grid for over thirty years.. And very frugal... He has his system set up to use the power as it's being produced there by being able to use a smaller battery bank.. And inpacting it less at night.. He and his wife also have a good youtube channel.. off grid living really... At the present time they are helping a couple build an off the grid close to their house.. In that set of videos.. They had the well pump installer, install a simple fitting that keeps the well and water line from freezing up.. Any way, his ideas, fit his life style.. And personally it's opened my eyes to other ideas on solar.. (He thinks outside the box.)

Solar panels like to be kept cool then they work their best. On the roof its too hot in the summer. On the ground you can maintain your solar panels easy and I dont want any holes in my new roof. Solar panels make it leak. Man you must be in great shape to do all the work like that your the dynamo. I have been praying that you dont fall. I ll pray you dont get too tired too. I am going to pray you get someone to help you roof that house too. The tin will be hard to handle up that high. The rafter in the foreground looks split real bad and you may scab on to the side of it for heavy snow load insurance.

Well, those rafter ties sure would have gone more smoothly with a second set of hands. But you got her done, that's the important thing. So, tongue and groove on top of the tails, maybe? The open cathedral ceiling would of been nicer but great job! Its really coming along. I can’t believe how much you accomplish by yourself.

In order to have the cathedral ceiling, he needs a beam right at the top of the ridge (not just a ridge board), or two side beams. The problem is, the beam would span 40 feet, and that won't work. He would need to support the beam midway at the least. What he could do is build a wall near the middle of the room, perpendicular to the ridge beam, and then a wall directly below on the first floor, and support the beam with 6x6 posts. So, the room would be divided into two. But he could have huge doorways on that wall. He needs a post where he had that temporary post holding up the roof, with support all the way down to the foundation. It's probably not too late to make the change. But if that piece of LVL on the ridge is 3 1/2" thick, that's considered a beam. But it looks like the ridge piece is only 1 1/2" thick. p.s. Probably the easiest way at this point to have that cathedral ceiling is to turn each pair of rafters into a scissor truss, and pull those rafter ties off.

you should have a safety harness on. The Springs that are on the neighbors property could you go to one of those to get water and lay poly to a holding tank at the house then pump it inside?

A couple of parallel 2x4's nailed to the bottom of your rafters at the right height would sure make this rafter tie job easier.

What about nailing a 2x4 temporarily at the bottom of where you want the osb to end. Then you could toss up the osb and the 2x4 would stop it from sliding off the roof.. Or double up the 2x4 so that you could toss a few sheets at a time.

I'm the sameway. I truly get joy out of figuring it out on my own and working alone. I feel rushed when working with someone else and my anxiety hits the roof. I used to climb onto my parent's 3 story home which had a roofline so steep I had to make sure the garage roof was under me so when the rocks or whatever is on the shingles became loose and would roll me down I only fell about 10ft. The garage roof was not as steep. I was a thrill seeker and enjoyed climbing, also loved being up high and enjoying the stars at night. I don't understand why more people don't try to do more on their own, I want to do so much but can't get the free time because so many want my time to have me help them or do things for them. These videos make me happy and help me imagine what I could do if I had the time. I really enjoyed your video where you talk about why you do it alone and how rewarding it is. Also how you include your wife with ideas so much even when it means more work. You two are married and you both try your best to make each other happy. Reminds me of my husband and I. Keep it up!

In my younger days I did a lot of unsafe things, When my wife turned 72 I gave away her safety harness, The right kind of safety rope grabber minimizes the trip hazard. so she doesn't get on roofs any more. A good aluminum roll around scaffolding saves a lot of time,

I am really looking forward to starting my journey to live off the grid and I just wanted to say that watching your videos encourages me and helps ease some fears I have about getting my foot through the door. I feel that I have enough construction experience to build my own home as well but my biggest fear is running out of money. I am currently serving in the military and my contract will end in about 1 year. I have saved up some money but I don't think that it will be enough and I really don't want to extend my contract. What would be a comfortable amount of money to start for a small 3 bedroom home on at least a 1 acres lot. I am open to any state as long as it's near a small town. Any advice is much appreciated!

So far I've managed to save up 50k and I think having 100k saved up would be a good start but I am really itching for the life style change. I am thinking about buying land now but I am having a hard time picking out what state is best for living off the grid. I hear some states dont allow you to collect rain water, and some states dont like you being disconnected off the grid. Can you name a few states that I can start looking at for options?

Ratha ZAV Idaho. As far north as you can get. Other than the Yellowstone Caldera volcano threat, it is one of the safest areas in the world. You should reference a book called "Strategic Relocation" by Joel Skousen. Another benefit of northern Idaho is some counties have very lax or non existentent building codes. It's also gorgeous with abundant wildlife. Good luck on your journey, and thank you for your service.

no eave ventilation? Probably will be fine if using closed cell foam insulation, although I think roxul is much better with baffles and vents. otherwise bottom of the sheathing will mold.

Dude I love your passion and determination. But I have to say, for someone who doesn't want others to get hurt on your project, you take far too many risks with your own safety. It would only take ten minutes to fashion a safety harness from some rope and tie yourself off on that roof. A fall from that height is almost guaranteed injury if not worse. Wow! I have never seen someone cause themselves extra work for not working smartly. SkyTrac forklift rentals are so cheap; and you could of fed all those sheets from outside. Time is money especially when rain is coming. Wet OSB wraps inward causing pocket valley's once damp. Getting felt down asap saves major headaches. You just keep squeezing that buffalo nickel and the only thing you will save is a shit pile of headaches. "W.W."
