Diatonically speaking Bb and Bdim shouldn't be the harmonic part of Nattai scale because note d is absent from the scale. Unless you're working with borrowed chords...

So I have a question, at 3:46 when you're moving from a Csus4 to a C and then to a Cm , does that mean when we sing "ma ga ri sa" in nattai with the tanpura droning from Sa Pa Sa, we're actually "harmonizing" with the tanpura within these chords? It's an absurd thought but I was curious

Absolutely right. And it’s not absurd at all. The concept of harmony in Indian classical music doesn’t exist but the fact is that we do harmonize with the tanpura. In fact it is that very harmony that tells us whether we are singing the notes properly or not. Don’t you agree?
@qkbarbland43322 жыл бұрын
@@KarthikSekaran yesss!!! I completely agree!! I thought that means every note we sing within a Sa Pa Sa tanpura is harmonizing with either the sa or the pa, but now seeing your videos I think the shudha Ri purely functions as a gateway to resolution? or does it harmonize with the tanpura as well?
@KarthikSekaran2 жыл бұрын
@@qkbarbland4332 it’s both. There are dissonant harmonies and then consonant harmonies. While dissonant one’s build the tension and give us a sense that “there is more to come” the consonant gives a feel of coming home. The shudh Ri wants to come to the Sa but with the tanpura it is still harmonizing.
