My absolute favorite Rage song. As a descendant of working southern Mexicans, that Zapata’s gun line always hits me. Emiliano Zapata tried to fight against the corrupt Mexican government but was thwarted by that government with help from their friends from the north. And look at Mexico now….

Ok, that’s technically true, but Tom modified his guitar to literally function and play as a theremin for that solo. That’s like attaching a synth to his guitar, only it works by waving your hand around it. I’m just saying.

Thank you to the person who pointed out that the powerful line "And tha riot be tha rhyme of tha unheard" is actually taken from MLK Jr.'s often-used line, "A riot is the language of the unheard." MLK Jr. is known to have first used this in 1966 but most famously used it in his 1967 "The Other America" speech given at Stanford (a year before his assassination). Zack also references 1966 in "Wake Up" although I don't know if this is a reference to MLK Jr., the height of the Civil Rights movement, or the founding of the Black Panthers (which were founded in '66), or all of the above given that he uses MLK Jr. and Malcolm X as examples in that song. I can only presume Zack changed "language" to "rhyme" for lyrical purposes. Regardless, thank you for your appreciation of RATM. Love your channel and RATM :D

What I like about your reaction is that you try to understand and dissect the lyrics meaning. That is one of the main thing that got me really interested in RATM and rap or hip hop genre overall. I pay attention to Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, KRS one etc. Meaningful lyrics, story telling, word play etc. I don't really follow rap that talks about ass, hoe and money. I don't get it. Just my personal opinion.

Zack always spits truth, he calls it exactly as it is - and he knows it's not just the US but the whole world...if anything they just get even more relevant with time, which is kinda sad in a way. Some tracks like this one are "sleepers" that take some time and a couple listens, but they didn't release a bad song imho :) "And the riot be the rhyme of the unheard"

Aaron De Jesus Henao yo, I comment constantly that yes, you are gonna be properly educated listening to Rage. It’s how I introduced my kids to reality in the 90’s. They went to school and when we were home and blasting music, singing and jumping to Rage, I’d break down the lyrics and explain why this message was there and they soaked it up, learned to question, opened up their minds....Rage was the best history lessons my kids ever had! Peace.

I agree its not as good as some of their tracks but its still great. The thing with Rock, like a lot of music is, much of it is written (especially the best stuff) is written/collated as an album. So some songs picked individually while still great don't work as well in isolation. They're album tracks and help you move through the album with a certain energy as well. Pink Floyd is a classic example of this. Their original albums were actually recorded in a different format so the whole album would be one track and be seamless. It was later cd releases of their albums etc that had the breaks between songs

Pretty sure "vultures" means european imperialism (which includes USA). In "people of the sun" he references "maya, mexica" (Which would be Mayans and Aztecs, respectively) and then "the vulture came to try and steal your name" Which would be Europe landing in the new continent.

think we're talking World Bank and IMF here. this band could not be allowed to exist after 9/11. See the 2001 Clear Channel Memorandum. Im guessing pretty much every lyric by this band would be considered "questionable." "Hope lies in the smouldering rubble of empire." Lines like that ain't gonna fly no more.
