Wow I forgot what a fierce force this song is. I mean has anyone given a full-throated appreciation of this record as a masterpiece? It's more apropos now than ever. One of the best runs of first three songs in rock. While their first album has its charms, it can sound dated, a little clichéd. God knows it helped form my political and social views. But damn the leap to Evil Empire esp by Zach is huge. He's perfected his flow and the hip hop elements are seamless. Tom and the rhythm section are a battering ram. I hear elements of Helmet and Fugazi in these grooves but it's so signature RATM. In a sense the riffs are often variations on "Wanton Song", but that song is base, as the kids say. The slow bridge in "Wind Below" abt "Disney bought the fantasies and piles of eyes/and ABC's new thrill ride of trials and lies..." is masterful. This is agit-prop against the corrupt bastards who now have the levers of power now more than ever. Someday, a solo Zach hip hop record will appear to impugne and malign the worst of us who always rule the rest of us.

The difference between a band like Rage from a band like Rise Against is that Rage gets into specifics. Clearly, Zach knows his history and how to back up his points with specific examples. Although I love Rise Against, too, Rage never plays it safe. They get right into the meat of how people are oppressed by the government and corporations.
@keiramaudsley2828Ай бұрын
you get a hell of a lot more soapbox space in hiphop than punk too, like Zach spits a page a verse almost whereas poor Tim only gets like 4-8 lines a verse that have to rhyme and a chorus that has to be like a hook so I think he does okay given the handicap that said Zach is a legend and there is a reason I know their first album front to back lol
