I love the Dirty Harry series to death. When the first movie came out, I was one of these avant-garde intellectuals who only approved of films that had little mass appeal and/or that were widely popular but only as a niche film category like Kubrick's. To me "Dirty Harry" epitomized everything that I hated about American movies: ultraviolence, revenge politics, outlaws defending the weak by short-circuiting the police, etc. Films like Bullitt, Dirty Harry, the spaghetti westerns, etc. I loved indie films, too. Some 50 years later, now that I've watched thousands of movies, including all Dirty Harry entries and a large number of popular violent films that I used to despise by sheer politics, I can honestly acknowledge my mistakes and errors of judgment. It's seldom too late to see what's good in movies that are mass pleasers, and in many cases, I had missed absolute gems. I learned to forget prejudices at the theater door and to appreciate the entertainment part of movies. Which doesn't mean I now hate the more "niche" films which have little mass appeal. I love all kinds of cinema, and I opened my mind to everything which has originality AND humor. "Bullitt"? My God! Another gem which I just love. Its violence doesn't detract from its actual interest. I also became a huge admirer of Eastwood as a director.
