Anthony was saying some off-putting things that made him sound like a douche and an egotist but what made it worse is that he said it while laughing in that circle of other dudes who were saying some vile misogynistic crap. If all I really knew of Anthony was overhearing that whole conversation, I'd also be instantly turned all the way off. Rizz minus a million. Obviously, the chemistry was planted earlier and we have the benefit of knowing Anthony in a deeper context so that's not the end of it, just the starting point. this season is literally my absolute favorite, absolutely incomparable. i relate SO much to both anthony and esp kate its crazy, this season is like therapy to me LMFAOOOO also, anthony is allowed to have standards but theyre a but ridiculous esp since he needs to look within and fix a lot within himself before demanding perfection from others and kate sees that and challenges that

@@Sjfyy_ I think the distinction there is standards in how a partner treats you versus standards in how a partner is perceived by society. Anthony is, understandably, treating marriage to the Viscount as a career- he wants the best applicant for the duties involved as Society Lady and future Bridgerton Matriarch. For emotional reasons related to his backstory, and for the way guys in this society(/fictionalized version of this period) are socialized to expect from marriages, it makes sense. But from the feminine perspective of wanting a husband who will treat her with respect/care, and the romanticized side (of the female leads' desires in-narrative, and also the audience watching a period-ish romance-genre drama), for all that there are duties involved in marriage, Anthony comes off poorly. He repudiates any notion of love in his marriage (even for cynics who don't believe in epic true love/romance, affection that strengthens into bonds of love is treated as pretty important in marriage), and treats women with various different skills as beneath him. For example, would I personally want to marry someone with no interest in reading? No, but that character clearly is an accomplished musician nonetheless who doesn't deserve scorn, especially since we have repeatedly seen some female characters on this show discouraged from reading "frivolous" novels- that is a hobby that was often looked down (my extremely educated grandmother and uncle have both at various times indicated disapproval because I read too much fantasy fiction). And for the woman who spoke Latin, but not Greek, is Anthony going to be speaking Greek to her regularly? Can he not afford a Greek tutor for his children, or to offer to assist in their studies in that himself? Maybe she speaks an additional language (like Edwina does) that he didn't think to ask about because it's not one he knows. Does he know multiple instruments, can he sew? Probably not, largely because there are different demands on him, but I think he would be understandably put off if any of those ladies had interrupted him or spoken to him in the way he did them. In the episode, that section is just a "humorous" montage, interspersed with him visiting and discarding sex workers and doing his actual paper work as viscount, but for a lot of women, that sequence can read as completely unhumorous and demeaning. He can have high standards- he just shouldn't be rude to/about women who don't match those particular standards, and he should realize that some of the standards are unrealistic and balance could be fair. Don't give up the standard for an intelligent woman, since it very reasonably does matter to him, but it doesn't mean she's unintelligent if her intelligence is in different subjects- he can then decide "I'd like to broaden my scope of things to know about and I can learn from her" or "while I respect her intelligence, I want someone whose interests more closely align with my own."

Most women are put off by men who only want someone who is beautiful and can bear children. Patriarchal and shallow reasons. Anthony definitely would have to get over such notions if Kate were to see him as anything but a walking red flag.

Guys listen to what Anthony and the men were discussing outside the ball. They all agreed that they gonna marry an amiable woman that they don’t love and then have sexual relations outside of the marriage. That was the biggest turn off for Kate. Not him listing the qualities of a woman. She’s not jealous of Edwina, she’s protecting her from a man who’s going to cheat on her.

I think it's somewhere in the middle of that. She wasn't gassing up Eloise because she didn't mention Eloise at all in relation in the article, but she as Penelope was trying to reappeal to Eloise and get her invested in Whistledown again because her ego was hurt by Eloise saying Whistledown lacked substance, and she also understood some of the true value in what Eloise saying about the measure/worth of women. I'm not sure Penelope quite realized yet the enmity she has created with the Queen and how her jabs to give herself more power are undermining the Queen/making her insecure. But Whistledown sure looks like an immature author for whining about how the Diamond hasn't yet been named, only to undercut the Queen for naming one when she finally does- fueling the expectation and demand only to make out like Charlotte was the shallow one, rather than acknowledging Whistledown herself had been egging on that system (which, for its many flaws in ranking women based on conformity and treating them as commodities, is also in this episode about that same substance Whistledown now claims to care about; Anthony, for all his awful unwillingness to extend real human connection here, is looking for a wife with a demeanor and skills that would suit what is a wife's career as a Viscountess). There's so much hypocrisy and cruelty involved in what Penelope writes, but because the show centers her perspective so much, she's let off the hook for most of it and treated heroically.

Sadly we lost Simon since actor chose to leave the show. Many reactors assume that Eloise is a main of this season because she has the same introduction to the Queen as Daphne did in S1 and one would naturally expect the show to follow a formula in that regard, but since you are 5 episodes in by now I'm sure you have realized that Anthony is the sole main 🙂 Each love story is very different from the other and the other Bridgerton-sisters won't necessarily have their main story in the same season they make their debut in front of the Queen the way Daphne did, so a general clue to identify who's the main Bridgerton of the season is if you can tell who they're gonna end up marrying from the first episode of the season. In this case they set up the Sharma-sisters and Anthony's relationship with them, while there's no big love interest set up for Eloise. Edit: Actually I just remembered that the easiest way to know who the main of the season is is looking at the text at the tree in the opening title where the name is literally written lol Bridgerton is currently aiming for all 8 siblings to have one season each so if they end up doing two sibling's main stories in one season that will be because they suddenly have to rush the ending of the show for some reason. With S1 currently at number 4, S3 at number 6 and S2 at number 10 on Netflix's top 10 most watched English series of all time, I'd say Bridgerton currently has a pretty good chance of lasting all 8 seasons. We shall see. I think Corey is very right about the reasoning for the hard focus on Pen as Whistledown in this episode, it was showing how Pen's existence as the wallflower underdog that people either ignore or look down on fit with her LW identity after it was just revealed last episode. I think them revealing Lady Whistledown to us at the end of S1 was simply because Bridgerton is based on a book series from like 20 years ago, so the information about her identity was already out there. Keeping it a mystery for S1 was fine under the assumption that people were gonna bingewatch the whole thing without encountering that many spoilers, but since people could find Whistledown with one Google search it would spread like wildfire and be common knowledge by the time S2 came around, so there was no point in keeping it a secret past S1. In the books her identity isn't revealed until almost halfway through the series.

Great reaction, fellas! For me personally, as a book reader, Season 2 is where Bridgerton gradually started to fall apart. However, there are other fans who consider this season their favorite, both from the fellow book readers and then non book readers alike. I'm of the specific bunch who wasn't quite as forgiving/accepting. Obviously I'll not delve into specifics since you guys are only just now beginning the season, but let's just say that the two stories deviate HEAVILY. The show leaves out sooooooooo much. It still makes me sigh in sadness of what could have been. Of course, then came Season 3, which makes Season 2 look glorious by comparison, but that's a whole 'nother ballgame.
