Midnight Mass is my favorite, too. The commentary on false gods and not always being able to tell a good thing from a bad thing, the power of the mob mentality and peer pressure and cult-like society. It's, in my opinion, such a beautiful commentary on todays society, in both religion AND politics. Brilliantly done. And Erins monologue as she dies is impossible to NOT cry during.

When this was originally released, some accused this show of being “anti-religion”. Flanagan had said this is more of a commentary on how religion is co-opted by “fanaticism”.
@kenjinpiniteu2 ай бұрын
Which is so funny because I don't think an American tv show has shown so much respect for religion than Midnight Mass. It criticizes fanaticism (Bev) while showing genuine people of faith (Riley's parents, Erin, Sheriff Hassan) and of dignity.

@@kenjinpiniteunot to mention it's very respectful of Islam as well. I think Flannigan did a wonderful job. I am catholic so I appreciate he actually got everything right except for the whole vampire thing obviously 😂. I know Flannigan is also catholic which is why he choose it; also Protestants don't believe it's the actual body or blood of Christ they believe it's representative and they they don't take it regularly so the show wouldn't work. It's nice to see my religion represented as mostly with American film they only ever depict Protestants.

I read somewhere that Mike Flanagan actually came up with the idea of this story when he was like eleven or twelve because he was reading dracula on his own but at the same time he was learning about communion in church or maybe it was Catholic school but he realized the similarties of drinking the blood of Christ and Dracula drinking blood. So he thought of the merging of the two.

So many fantastic ideas! My favorite parts are the fact that Erin got what Riley described as his image of an "afterlife" (becoming one with the universe) and Riley got Erin's description of Heaven, being receptioned by a friendly face and being forgiven as he follows on. That was a great idea on many levels, and very respectful Also, the Sheriff and his son praying before dying is symbolically marked by the fact that the son took the place of the one conducing the prayer for his weak and dying father, who had, in a previous episode, mentioned he felt sad that his son didn't do that anymore and also by the fact that Muslims pray towards the holy city of Mecca which, in America, will be also praying towards the rising sun, so the prayer had this other level.

Hill House was all about unprocessed trauma and its consequences. Bly Manor was all about memories or their loss. How and whether to remember people, when memories become faceless either due to time or dementia. Midnight Mass was all about religion, but even deeper mass mobilization through blind following. How easy it is to turn normal people into fanatics through manipulation, regardless of what faith they follow. These series never revolved around ghosts or vampires. They were just a distraction or a Trojan horse. This is about social behavior and things we deal with every day, far from any imagination. This is reality. Btw. The fanatic witch here is the same actress who played Steve's wife in Hill House.

Midnight Mass, my favorite show by Mike Flanagan, is closely followed by Hill House. For his movies, Doctor Sleep is his best, followed by his first movie, Absentia. The cultural contemporary of Western vampires has always been associated with Christianity, particularly those stemming from Vlad the Impaler, who fought in the Crusade and drank the blood of his enemies and victims. Midnight Mass effectively flips the vampire narrative in a new and bold way by drawing from this perspective. Additionally, Midnight Mass holds personal significance for Flanagan, who was raised Catholic. The show’s title is a reference to a novel written by Kate Seigel’s character in Hush (which was on Netflix but is now on AMC+), and the book is read by Carla Gugino in Gerald’s Game, another fantastic movie by Flanagan on Netflix. Regarding the ending and the fate of the Angel and Leeza’s leg, here are my thoughts and what Flanagan has said in interviews. When Leeza mentioned that she could feel her paralysis returning while the island was burning and the Angel flew away from the sun, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the Angel died. Leeza’s paralysis returned because the vampiric blood in her system was slowly dying since she didn’t drink from the communion chalice (since we last saw her drank) and participate in the last rite. The island’s burning and the Angel’s distance from her may have also contributed to her paralysis. As for the Angel’s fate, Flanagan intentionally left it ambiguous due to its symbolism of fanaticism, suggesting that it never truly dies.

The beauty of this show is how it really has nothing to do with religion, at least not in the sense that you think at first. This vampire like creature was not an angel or any other type of biblical figure but rather a predator smart enough to use their faith to its advantage. In this Flanagan world it is a completely normal thing masquerading as whatever the people wanted it to be to get what it wanted from them. Similar to how the religious ones (especially Bev) took what was going on and used it as a sign or a way to give reason to their madness but were too foolish to realize what was really going on. Such a brilliant job done by Flanagan and the other writers to create this fantastic show.

This show was fantastic. I haven't seen Bly Manor or Hill House yet, but obviously now I have to. Using the same roster of actors seems to have worked out well for American Horror Story, and these actors were definitely worthy of being reused. The "angel" is so ancient it is practically feral, but not completely. It understands Paul, how else would he have smuggled it over in a crate. But the blood obviously creates an insatiable lust and drinking it is all consuming, which explains the angel's indifference to the gunshots and the knife slicing its wings, and the townspeople's blood frenzy after they turned. Only Riley's parents had the sense of self and strength of will not to give in, which is probably where Riley got it. Interestingly, the usual trope of the vampire shunning judeo-christian symbols like the cross and holy grounds and such is the one trope not used here. That may be one reason no one uses the word vampire, because such a thing couldn't possibly be in the house of the Lord. I think Lisa losing feeling in her legs was meant to show the angel didn't survive the sun, which also implies if the kids die now, they won't turn. Best death monologue ever. Needed Bev to suffer in frustration and terror of her ending a little longer, but still so satisfying watching her trying to dig a hole then scream and burn.

Some of you guys seem Christian or like you were raised that way so you might appreciate this. Part of what makes this so brilliant in my opinion is that Flanagan is retelling the Christ story, but he’s turned it on its head. Erin is the analogue to Jesus’ mother Mary. Instead of being the divine virgin, she comes into the story already pregnant out of wedlock. Instead of a miraculous pregnancy, she suffers a miraculous miscarriage. The night she spends with Riley before he dies seems like a pretty clear analogy to the garden of Gethsemane, but instead of Jesus’ disciples repeatedly falling asleep we have Erin staying up the whole night. I’m pretty sure that Erin wailing in the boat after Riley dies is meant to be Mary at the foot of the cross. You also have Riley managing to drink no one after being turned (Jesus fasting in the desert), Riley absolving himself of the sin of his drunk driving accident by an act of self-sacrifice, and Riley being met with forgiveness from the ghost of the woman he killed after the sacrifice is made (Jesus caught up to heaven by the angels - I mean, just look at the change in color scheme). Also literally Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. And then there’s Bev. I’m not sure if she’s meant to be the devil or the Pharisees. Maybe both. Bev sucks.

Usher uses some of the same actors, but the characters are SO different it gives the actors a chance to show some range (except for one blaring miscast that I’ll keep to myself until you finish Usher.) Second, Mass is my next to least least favorite of the Flan-a-verse. To ME, it was very predictable and had no surprises. At the beginning, when a crate of dirt shows up, that’s usually a good tell right there. Do us all and yourselves a favor. After you finish FotHoU, watch “Gerald’s Game.” You’ll understand why it should be right after Usher.

Hill house is still nr 1 flanagan for me, but midnight mass GROWS ON ME. The only downside to midnight mass are the overly long monologues. Yes, the speaches are beautiful, but it's just too long and theatrical(for me personally). Other than that I really love the themes and the performances and the writing and the production, all of it!

except for erins final monologue on death, i ADORE it.

@@Marina-cq2yt, for me the final monologue is the worst offender. I find it kinda pretentious, and it’s placing in the episode awkward. And it breaks the immersion for me, I start to feel like it’s not the characters talking but the screenwriter preaching at me. But it’s a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things. Midnight Mass is incredibly ambitious and unapologetically talky. Most of the times it works great, sometimes - not so much.

I'm glad I'm not religious because this show would've triggered me sooo bad.
