Seeing him break, lagertha leaving him, his daughter's death, brother's betrayl the first time, losing the settlement in wessex, losing athelstan, and his brother's second betrayl, all of this... it could drive someone mad, mad enough to commit suicide and yet, he still kept living with his broken heart away from his duty and his family. Then finally, to his death he went. I cant get over how broken amd shattered ragnar was. When lagertha left it was the start of his collapse.

I absolutely love how Ragnar tells Athelstan (his grave) that he didn't understand what a "martyr" was, but ends up having his death serve the purpose of a martyr. Perhaps, in the end, he understood & intended on going out on the same note as his friend; Ragnar always had a plan/agenda. His death served as the fuel for the Great Heathen army, and the death of two kings (King Aelle & King Ecbert). The fury of a patient man. Great writing & great acting at it's finest.

The Gyda death speech always gets me. For a man in that culture it's always about having sons to carry on his legacy. Ragnar had 5 sons, but the death of his oldest child, his only daughter Gyda is the one that effected him the most.. part of Ragnar died the day his daughter died. He would never be the same after that point in time.

For a “barbaric pagan” Ragnar is such a poet. Travis Fimmel performance in this cemented him as my favourite actor. Shame he never won an award
@ilprincipealexandre3 ай бұрын
the Norse populations were full of excellent poets and storytellers, fortunately their stories and poems have been brought together, many of which thanks to Snorri Sturluson, had a much more complex of what one believes to see the world and their gods, divided by many names, as if they were different entities and yet only fragments of the same personality, this process occurred for each Aesir or Vanir.
@SliceofLife-edits20012 ай бұрын
They’re one of if not the most popular culture for warrior poetry and also they’re gods and creatures have stories great enough to rival the Greeks While yes Vikings were barbaric and pagans they were very crafty and some of their culture still influences modern society. One example is the days of the week Wednesday was wodinsday wodin being another term for Odin. Thursday is Thors day and Friday is named after frigg

Travis nailed the Gyda scene. Watching the whole show after makes you understand how powerful this scene was, Ragnar was always pushing his sons to become stronger, but Gyda was his flower, he never intended on making her anything, except what she would have wanted to be, she was his princess, and the words he used in that specific speech did touch my heart and it made me realise how bad it is to lose a child, especially a little girl
