I was asked to create some storage space out of a hidden area underneath the staircase in brother's hallway for things like shoes, coats and bags. This involved some cutting and demolition work, tiling, plasterboarding, woodworking and carpentry!

2:00 I had a little accident a few years ago with a disc cutter. It was set up in the same way as yours is... As I was cutting through the wall I got near to the bottom where the blade caught and kicked back violently, working its way across my chest and into my neck before the blade was caught by the fibres in my nylon jacket and stopped. I had the cover down, but as you go down the wall it rotates the match it and then when it doeskick back and hit you the blade is exposed. What I learnt that day is never sit in line with a rotating blade. Screw the handle into the top of the device rather than the left-hand side to facilitate this. You can still see your cut line, and it doesn't leave another one across your body for posterity. If you're interested in the follow-up from that drop me a message. I wish you all the very best, and a happy LONG life.

Thank YOU for this scary but informative Comment. It's amazing how quickly things car go seriously wrong with electric power tools, as I've learnt, but comments such as these serve us all well if they pre-warn us to think about 'What if' consequences. I'm glad you survived to pass this information on. Thanks again.

You did wonderful job of making extra storage for their family. It looks great. I enjoyed the "why, why, why, why..." session. Too cute! Well done!

These spaces are so low and annoying to get stuff out of that i think roll in roll out storage is the way to go. I built two wheeled shoe racks for my space, makes it so much more usable than the dump it was before.

When i'm faced with really rubbish jobs, like this one, I just remind myself that it only has to be done ONCE. I actually stopped building my shed, in a really difficult spot, and watched this, as a form of break from a really crappy job. Thanks for the break.

When I was young (10ish) we had a little neighbor who always asked questions about everything we were doing. We loved that guy cause he was tough as nails, and he'd always volunteer when we required a subject to put experimental theories to the test. It was the 60's, so everything was fine.

Great project! I did something similar in my house in Queens NY. Very similar stairs and orientation in the house to this house. I went a slightly different path. After clearing out the space under the stairs and removing the section of wall under the bottom 6 steps I ended up making a right triangle pull out drawer to make use of the space. The drawer pull was disguised under a faux vent and the rails were from an old IBM rack server that was rated for 250 lbs (US) or 115 kg. It was reclaimed storage and obscure too :)

Nice work "Keefy", that's such a useful space in a small hallway, I can't believe they would just leave it as an un-used void ! Those clinker blocks always seem to have a peculiar smell ! It's often good to talk to your neighbours before doing something like this, you're unlikely to be the first person in the street to have done this, can save time, money and agro learning from their experience. There is a technique in process improvement and problem solving known as the "five whys" used to get to the heart of a problem. Personally I've always encouraged my kids to ask lots of questions, it's a good habit in life, you shouldn't just take anything for granted, although admittedly it can be annoying when you're stuck in a small dark place trying to do something ! Good to see your niece involved in the painting too, she is very cute !

Looks great, jealous of those tiles! I did similar with my under stair space making a draw for shoes in the tight end of the triangle and a cupboard the other. One thing I learned in the process of renovating my house is it's usually fruitless to try and save bits of wall like that and better to start again. I had a builder damage the lath and plaster ceiling putting steels in, I tried to work around it but just ended up pulling the lot down and boarding it again.

Depending on the design of the house, this wall that you but the door in could be designed to withstand the spread of fire for a set period, an hour or 2 depending. So in the case of a fire it gives the people in the house (upstairs) the use of the stairs to get out of the building. But putting in a door that say is not rated to protect the stairs for 1 hour in a fire could compromise this. This of course depends on the design of the house, for example this is needed in a 2 story house with attic conversation as extra time is needed in case people in the attic room need to escape.

Looks lovely, but can't help but notice the push opener being used with a handle. That's adding an extra step in the door opening process since you could just pull the handle! A soft close hinge works better with handles as push openers are usually for clean aesthetics. I can't fault it though, I'd do it myself to avoid the annoyance of a push opener breaking!
