I recommend anyone who doesn't need to move from machine to machine, to simply buy two cheap sata drives and setup raid 1 using windows disk management.

Very useful technology, all companies should use this for vital documents and files in my opinion. Great review Aaron and have a wonderful week my dear!

stupid question: why not SSD? price? not enough capacity?
@RudyVisuals2 жыл бұрын
There are SSD raid docks out there as well but they're not as common I think mostly due to SSD's at that storage capacity being too expensive still. From what I've read there are some issues with using SSD's in raid as well.

I was not expecting an intro like that for a video about hard drives !!

i needed that big storage for backups! haha.
@LifetimeTravelmates2 жыл бұрын
as video editor (on laptop (MacBoo) and travelling) I assume I need external drives. first we carried a couple of HDD of 1tb each. Now we use those Sandisk Extreme portable SSD and no problem at all! they are great! of course, at home or in a studio, raid is the way! 😉
@RudyVisuals2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments! In your case for travel and just for filming YT videos, yeah a RAID dock is overkill. Unfortunately with high resolution 10bit cameras, the file sizes are so huge you kinda need waay more storage capacity and my day job requires me to have backups of everything. It's really inconvenient but a neccesary evil :(

I cannot stop laughing with this video, love the intro, and the comments comparing things hahaha And this video cannot be any better for us. This is awesome for us, you know how devastated we were after the summertime. Good thing we travel in the van now, because we def would not be able to carry those on our backpacks lol

Glad you enjoyed it! I hope at the very least you guys are backing up all your stuff in multilple places just to be safe!!

@@RudyVisuals we are. We always do, but with the footage that has been used and not with new footage, that was out biggest mistake during the summer

Great and very informative video. I use two sata drives and setup raid 1, you can do it simply with windows disk management but like you say, it's not portable solution. I had a hard drive wiped from a bad torrent download a few years ago and learnt my lesson the hard way to always back up everything.
@sarag41872 жыл бұрын
I've always heard of RAID and NAS but never really understood what they were. I learnt something new today so thanks! I'll have to stick with a regular usb hard drive for now since my photography is not super important, just a hobby.

I've been researching this topic for a few months now but I've heard mixed things about Lacie in general. Thanks for the review. My main concern would be with the noise and of course the price too.

I have a drawer full of old usb hard drives. I think one is from 2008 and is a whopping 100gb. I have been wanting to adopt a system like this for my own design projects as well as my hobby video work so this was very useful to see. Shame everything has to be so expensive but I guess it's cheaper than losing all your work.
@RudyVisuals2 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely agree. The initial cost is worth it in the end compared to losing your files forever.

I'm looking for a drive with at least 5TB of storage to use for editing raw 6k video from a Red Komodo, but I don't have a dump truck of money to spend - Do you have any recommendations for this scenario? I've been looking at the LaCie d2 and 2big drives, but I am feeling very indecisive as hard drives are not my area of expertise. My ideal budget is no more than $500.

At the very least, people should backup their most important files. I almost lost a year worth of work when my laptop died but luckily I was able to salvage the drive inside.
@RudyVisuals Жыл бұрын
Yep and do it at least once a month!

Right now I'm using a 24tb g-raid shuttle 4. You can't put a price on protecting your files.

32tb!? Pretty sure my laptop has a 256gb hard drive and windows 11 takes up like 60% of it lol
