The original Raiden series has some of the most well known shmup games out there. Raiden DX was released as a sort of "arranged" version of Raiden II with 3 different courses and other new features.
Novice course is basically a lite version of the first 5 stages from Raiden II that doesn't loop, unlike the Training and Expert courses. Scoring mostly comes from medals. When a medal is uncovered it'll gradually "rot" and decrease its score value, when it reaches the lowest value (10 points) it'll flash for a brief moment before returning to the lowest value again. Collecting a flashing medal gives you 3,000 points (10,000 for the blue one), while simply grabbing a medal as soon as you uncover it will only grant 500 points. Furthermore, every 3 medals that you time successfully a Miclus will spawn in place of the next medal. Miclus items follow the same rules as above except they only have 2 states, 10k for the default state and 50k for the flashing one (or I guess "cringing" in this case), so there is an incentive to time the medals and get a few Miclus items even if you don't go for their 50k values.
This is why I'm using 2P side instead of 1P side. The 1P ship has faster vertical movement while the 2P ship has faster horizontal movement. Faster horizontal speed is better for medalling due to their placement and can be helpful in some dodging whereas faster vertical speed isn't much of an advantage for these situations.
Other scoring mechanics include finding the gold radars and the end bonus. Each stage has one gold radar and they are found by just flying over the spot where they're hidden for a few seconds and destroying them. The end bonus is comprised of:
-Enemy destruction.
-Gold radars (15% for uncovering, 5% for destruction).
-Guts.
Guts system is fucking weird. It is calculated based on your average vertical position on screen, your proximity to enemies upon destroying them (although I think this goes for big enemies more than anything) and how long you've been pressing buttons. Holding start rules out the last condition and usually it'll give you a high guts percentage, but the guts still assigns a random value and there is a chance you'll just randomly get a low percentage even if you bothered with holding start button the whole run lol
Another scoring aspect is the usual surplus items. Bombs in particular give you 50k but only if they're all of the same color otherwise you'll get 10k, which I didn't get as this run I fucked up in stage 3 and 4 and you only cash-in on surplus bombs during stage 5 due to item order shenanigans (several powerup carriers will give you bombs if you get there without dying).
