A serious crash occurred with 67002 at Lawrence Hill (Bristol) on 1 November 2000, when a Royal Mail train passed two red signals and ran into the back of a coal train at around 3:30am. The mail train, hauled by 67002 "Special Delivery" with 67012 at the rear, was travelling at 50 mph when the incident occurred. The locomotive climbed over the back of the coal train, coming to rest 40 yards (37 m) later on top of a coal wagon and against the A420 Church Road bridge. The driver of the mail train suffered a broken arm and cuts to the face and chest, but there were no other injuries.[38][39][40][41] The incident was initially suspected to be caused by faulty brakes, but was later found to be caused by misunderstanding and incorrect use of the locomotive's brake pipe isolation valve by railway staff.[39][42]

Well since this happened in 2000, there has been plenty of time to ask: 1. Why was the mail train on the same tracks as the coal freight train, regardless if the mail train was a run-away or not. Number two. From the clips it appears that the "back" end of the of the mail train hit the locomotive and sending it over the coal cars. So why was the mail train going "backwards"? has this been explained? And number 3. Did you make any video of the clean up and locomotive being lifted off the cars and tracks?
@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways
@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways 6 жыл бұрын
All our trains travel of the same track if going in the same direction; don't yours? It wasn't a runaway until the driver could not apply the brakes on the decline. No 2. These trains have locos at both ends as they reverse into some stations and the driver changes ends. Clean up was at night and I live 60 miles away and do not work for the railway and would not be allowed on their site............hope this helps. Mike in Wales.

Fault was cause when the driver isolated brake pipe, trapping air, so brakes stayed released. Therefore train ran away. All he had to do was hit emergency brake plunger. Panic I guess, and did not do it , he fractured his shoulder I believe when he jumped off . Could have been a lot worse if that coal train was not there. Could have run into Bristol TM . Brake isolation and parking brake isolation notices not very clear on the 67's.

Most German built EMU's come by rail nowadays. Spain might be a bit further away but I'd be much quicker I reckon (including loading and unloading). Although the gauge difference might also have been an issue back in the day.

Dont Spanish railways use a different gauge to the rest of Europe or did I miread that somewhere else? That being the case they cannot be driven from Spain through France to the UK? Although the high speed trains run on standard, I dont think they'd allow effectively cargo to run on these rails.

I seem to have seen a video somewhere of the British Royal train being worked by 67005 / 67006. Seem to be part of the permanent rake formation. That aside , brake systems either the old vacuum or present day compressed air...if they fail brakes apply at once...in the one case loss of vacuum and the other ..loss of air pressure. And what happened to the dead man's pedal...now termed the vigilance alert button ? There can be no " runaway " train actually ! Like that moronic film " Unstoppable ".

Before I retired I was called for a light engine job and had to pickup a dead engine that had been dead for three days so no air pressure on her. My conductor described the settings in the cab and only hooked up the brake pipe couldn't get a proper brake test so I finally got out and hooked up the main resivour hose and after we charged up the mains resivour tanks she passed the brake test with flying colors. Be willing they didn't hook up all the mu air lines. If the had the engineman would have been able to stop her with the engine brake alone.

@marshallman7608 6 жыл бұрын
Yes you need to connect the reservoir pipe to build up air pressure in a dead loco to get the brakes working but the coaches on the mail train are perfectly capable of being operated on a single pipe, the air from the brake pipe cross feeds into the coach air reservoirs.

Force is a function of mass and velocity, with several hundreds of tons of train it doesn't take much velocity to create an awful lot of force. Given the laws of motion, it requires the same force to stop an object in motion as it already posseses.

AHHH SULZER! IN THE 1970s AT&SF EXPERIMENET AND DROPPED 4 SULZER V-16 ENGINES INTO EMD SD-45 LOCOS! THIS WAS DONE DUE TO FUEL USAGE IN THE 2 CYCLE 645 ENGINES THIS WAS BROUGHT ABOUT DUE TO THE SHORTAGE OF PETROLEUM FUELS DUE TO THE MIDEASTERN 7 DAY WAR AND ESCALATING FUEL PRICES. HOWEVER THIS WAS A SHORT LIVED UNSUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT DUE TO CRANKSHAFT PROBLEMS WITH THE SULZERS! ANOTHER SANTA FE SHOP DID THE INSTALLATION AND HEAVY MAITENENCE ON THEM, AND AT ARGENTINE ( KANSAS CITY) WE ONLY DID TURN SERVICING AND VERY LIGHT REPAIRS TO THE SULZERS! I WAS ONE OF THE VERY FEW ALCO MECHANICS AT ARGENTINE AND WANTED TO DO SOME SERIOUS WORK ON THE SULZERS! I ALSO WANTED TO RIDE THEM ON THE MAINLINE WHILE PULLING HEAVY TONNAGE UPGRADES TO SEE HOW THEY DID, BUT ONLY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE THEM DOING SO FROM TRACK SIDE! I ALSO HEARD THAT PIELSTIK ENGINES WERE ALSO UNDER CONSIDERATION BUT NOTHING HAPPENED! I NEVER WAS MUCH OF A LOVER OF 2 CUCLE DIESELS, AND THE MAIN COMPETITOR WAS GENERAL ELECTRIC (US) WITH ITS COOPER-BESSEMER DERIVATIVE 7-FDL 4 STROKE ENGINES! THEY GAVE BETTER FUEL MILEAGE AND GOOD POWER BUT WERE OFTEN QUITE TROUBLESOME! HOWEVER G-E AND SANTA FE DID A LOT OF TEST AND EXPERIMENTS AND FINALLY IN 1989 WAS ABLE TO HAVE A LOCOMOTIVE SUPERIOR TO THE EMD! I WAS INVOLVED WITH THIS WORK, AND TODAY LIKE TO BRAG THAT G-E S ARE BUILT IN ERIE PENNSYLVANIA AND PERFECTED ON THE SANTA FE IN ARGENTINE SHOPS!!

Did that old 47 haul 8 67s? If that is the case why are we buying locos outside the UK? We invtented the railways, so why is our government destroying our manufacturing capabilities, why have they been destroying our railways, why isn't anyone doing anything about it? why am i sitting on my ass watching videos on utube? I'm having a break, eating my dinner, then I'll back on facebook to campaign against building on the old docks in Porthcawl, I'm sick about them closing the Porthcawl Railway as it is. I'll soon be on the streets begging for help. I am doing this at 70 years old.

Hello Peter. I'm in my 80th year and can understand your feelings. We bought all our 66 from Canada, 67s/68s from Spain. All the loco builders in the UK closed years ago due to the fact they didn't invest in new plant etc so when EWS wanted 66s they was nobody to supply them in the UK. End of story.
