I am getting ready to make a jelly roll rug and I just came across yours and I was thinking the circular ones and the oval ones look to be kind of complicated this looks a lot easier to do I might do this one

THANK YOU for telling us to trim those precut batting rolls need to be trimmed. I had been struggling with not being able to easily fold it. I thank you for telling me that! Makes a HUGE difference!

You are so awesome. Thank you for stating the obvious on this project. Age-old techniques are not a secret or owned by any pattern owner. Other creators are scared to death to give simple tips like however wide your strip set is, that’s how you measure where to cut a darn square. Love ya

That rail fence is nice. It almost makes more sense than making a long oval because I think the oval might tend to have a curl to it and would require some spraying and ironing to make it more straight. Thanks for showing how you make this jelly roll rail fence rug! Oh, the other thing is how you can decide what colors to put next to each other, so I like that too.

Could I just zigzag another 3-strip long jellyroll spaghetti strip around the rug instead of a traditional binding? The binding covers some of the strips and is very thick to sew.

When you cut your 6" segments, and before turning them horizontal and vertical, how do you finish the raw edges (created by cutting them)??? Or did I miss that part? Love the video, many thanks!

Not the author, but it looks like she does not finish the raw edges. Maybe zig zagging the edges is enough? (My heart hurts at that!)

When I start sewing strips together, I overlap the folded side, and when I sew the sets of 2 together do I overlap those too?

We typically do a tiny overlap, but it's really more about making sure there's not a gap beneath the zigzags (pushing them against one another as you stitch is maybe a more accurate description than a true overlap)

This seems like so much easier to make then a round or oval one because you don't have all the strips in the sewing machine at the same time to try and manage. I have not done a rug yet but I think I will try this type first. Do you find the are slippery, I am thinking they would be. Do you use anything to help them not be slippery....like glue gun drops? Thanks for sharing...great idea.

We haven’t had an issue with slipping but it probably depends on the floor more than the rug. We’d recommend a rug grip/rug pad over something like hot glue.

I made one of these. It sits on the tile floor in front of my dishwasher. I don't have any problem with it slipping on the tiles.

I’ve made an oval rug and it does slip on my tile floor. I’ve been using remnants of shelf / drawer gripper rubber under it to keep it positioned.

Question- How wide and long did your Rail Fence Jelly Roll Rug come out?

I don't think we ever got a finished measurement on this one, but you can add extra strips (even cut from yardage) to make it exactly the size you want! One strip set should get you to at least 24"x36", but maybe a bit larger depending on the brand/number of strips included in the set.

Yes, but if you're worried you can always shorten your stitch length for some extra coverage.
