I did the downloadable pattern. Instead of cutting the original pattern, I traced it onto a large sheet of parchment paper so I now have the original pattern and the actual rug size. Thank you for this pattern.

I've completed rug #2 and have a few more hints that I think may help (or not) - it came out very nice. 1. I found that if I pressed each strip upon completion of the folding and stitching on Both sides on my pressing mat that has the lines my strips came out much less wonky - I then did the same as I attached one to another. Really happy with the results. 2. I found that the needle got dull after my first mat - saw skipped stitches - so be aware not only to clean your machine but you will probably need a new needle. 3. My second roll of batting was truer to size but i still did each strip separately - easier for me. I found that if I turned it over and smoothed the piece and batting from both sides that the strips seemed to come out more even width. Again - thanks for such a great project.

I have finished my rug and I love it! On to make a matching twin (ladies at quilt shop loved it too!). I will be try to be concise with hints/suggestions/observations. 1. My Kathadin batting strips actually measured 2 5/8 inches which threw me at first when I seemed to have excess when folding - I did but after a few different trials and realizing it wasn't me - I got the folding down - be patient and know you will have some excess in the center. I found that since I had some mini clips I used them on the opposite side of the fold which helped to keep things together. 2. I didn't find an advantage of laying multiple strips after each other - I didn't have to use as many clips (one less store trip as I had some from previous projects) and the strip was easier to manage at my machine - each to his own. 3. I HIGHLY suggest using a stilleto vs fingers near machine! 4. You may find it helpful to slow your machine down if that's an option. 5. Part way through, check your bobbin area for fuzz/lint as this project produces lots and its best to keep the machine clean. 6. If cutting your own strips, make sure to press the crease out before you lay the batting on. 7. When I was joining two rows of different lengths I used my frixion pen to mark the two rows where they would line up - easier than trying to hold them. 8. I'm NOT good at eye balling if I was pressing straight (found that out seeing the wonky) - got out my old press and cut mat with its nice lines and used that to straighten each row with iron. 9. I highly suggest before cutting the curve, once marked take it to machine and inside the cut line run a stitch - this will help so as not to pull any stitches out while cutting. Again - thanks so much for tutorial and pattern!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It took me a long time, but I did finish my rug and it turned out great. One comment on a 'potential' improvement. (My project went a lot faster after I tried this) I cut about a quarter of an inch off the width of the batting roll so that when I fold it, the two ends of the material actually come together. This makes it much easier to fold the project for sewing, and makes the strips much more consistent. It's nice not to have to fight the materials every step of the way. I wish Bosal would make a 2.25" wide batting roll. I would purchase that version instead.

I have just started putting together strips for a pot mat (trivet) for the table. I used 2.25” rather than 2.5” for the batting. The 0.25” allows for the fabric wrapping around the batting making the centre’s match so much better. I tried with 2” but felt it needed that little bit more to fill the fabric.

When I pair the strips, is there a reason that I can’t use the same method as the rectangle rug - that is, placing the stitched seams together then zigzagging them? I use my edge stitch #10 foot to stitch the fabric tubes with a 1/8” seam and am not sure that placing the tubes back to back as you describe will work for me.

I just finished my first jelly roll sliced rug. It was really easy and fun to make. I do have one comment....after I sewed all the strips together my rug was a smaller size than the pattern I used to trace on the rug to cut it out. I did sew the strips together as noted in the video and yes I did iron, iron and press and pressed it but still I could not get it to stretched to as big as the pattern. I was very careful making sure my seams were straight. I did butt my strips inside the double part of the strip. Was I suppose to just lay each strip right next to each other? I thought you nested those strips. Any suggestions?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 5 жыл бұрын
After speaking to our sewing specialist she mentioned that the size of the Slice Rug depends on how tightly Katahdin is rolled in the strips and how tightly the seams are nested. -Kyla :)

Curious approximately how much does the supplies cost? Meaning the jelly roll and batting.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 4 жыл бұрын
Jelly Rolls are typically around $40 from quilt shops like ours (you can find them on sale for a little less sometimes) and the Katahdin is around $15 for 25 yards. You can make one Slice Rug from 1 Jelly Roll (or 31 2.5" strips if you prefer to use yardage) and 1 25-yard roll of Katahdin. - Morgan

I am a beginning sewer and I’m trying to make this rug. I noticed as I saw my strips together they’re starting to curve and I don’t understand why as they’re all straight
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! That can happen if you're not sewing from different sides (i.e. feed a strip through with the bulk of the project to the left, then flip it around and sew the other strip opposite. We'd also recommend using your walking foot and not pushing/pulling the strip sets too much, as that can distort the fabric. There will be some curling/curving, even on the best rug, so after you're done, use a lot of Magic Sizing, press the rug, and leave under heavy book stacks or other similar item to help flatten after pressing. - Morgan
