To get the cheapest fares on Britains railways you'll want to use a Railcard if you can ... which typically give you 1/3 off of the off-peak fare. But there are multiple railcards which all work slightly differently, so we thought we'd try and explain what they are.
DOWNLOAD the PDF which is the complete guide here: geofftech.co.uk/download/Railc...
(We'll update this over time as and when things change)

Just want to say that the 16-25 railcard does have a restriction in the form of a minimum fare before 10am on weekdays. This can be annoying for shorter journeys with fares under the £12.

@@aw7544 Its a mess tbh. I used to live in Switzerland years ago and they had a railcard available to residents only that cost IIRC 120 swiss francs this entitled the holder to HALF price travel for a year on virtually all the rail network in the country with no time of travel or minimum fare restrictions. I think it also allowed travel on some trams, buses and boats and maybe its metro at Lausanne. Very simple

The 16-25 Railcard also offers a 34% discount on TfL caps, both peak and off-peak, e.g. the Zone 1-2 cap with railcard is just 4.50. Also, while for rail tickets there is a discount during peak there is NO discount for an oyster peak fare... They really need to simplify the system

Register your railcard with your Oyster card at any TfL station (ask which member of staff can do this). Then the Oyster system deducts the discount automatically from fares and caps, but now that the bus fares, and bus only caps, are still full price. Also note that there seems no way to get the disabled railcard discount for a companion

One tip/trick with the friends and family railcard, is if you've got a child under 5 (ie doesn't need a ticket). You can quite often save money by actually buying them a ticket and using the friends and family card with them (assuming you don't have any >=5 year old children who are travelling anyway!)

The Gold card is available to anyone living anywhere in the country, and (correct me if I am wrong) the discounted fares apply anywhere in the UK The only geographical requirement is that the season ticket stations are both in the extended "South East" area. But you can buy that season ticket at any ticket office throughout the country.

Choosing the appropriate ticketing app and finding the biggest possible discounts is a useful way to save money. For those living in or travelling around the UK and Europe, getting a railcard is a good option. If I remember correctly there is a software that is discounting all train tickets in the UK and Europe and can also be used in conjunction with the railcard discount. It's very economical and I've spent 35% less each time I've travelled!

British Railcards. Without wanting to show off, Germany has a much simpler system. DB (German railways) offers three cards, Bahncard 25 and 50, giving either 1/4, 1/2 or full reduction of standard Flexpreis and also always 1/4 on advance Sparpreis fares. A bit complexity comes from that some, but not all, regional transport authorities sometimes grant a bit of discount on bus and tram fares as well. There's also a Bahncard 100 (costing €4270 a year in second class) that gives unlimited travel on almost all of Germany's railways and also in many urban transport systems

Another trick for cheap tickets is split ticketing: it can be cheaper to buy tickets from A to B with an intermediate stop than a direct ticket. It's legit as long as the train calls at the intermediate station. (I've saved quite a bit using that trick to visit my family in Manchester.)

The only thing to mention is that most jobcentre do not offer this anymore. Apparently according to a ex-employee it was scrapped at certain jobcentres due to costs and abuse. Now JCP gives claimants 100% if the journey is 90 minutes from their home address. That is regardless if it is an interview or a job (though they only pay upto the first month of being paid). Which was useful when I had to attend an interview in York.

I think one trick which combined with a railcard could save more money is ticket splitting. Example my station to where I work, a offpeak return is £46.70 (with railcard it is £30.85). If I split my journey, the split offpeak return would cost £30.30 (with railcard it is exactly £20.00) So if you look at both methods, with my railcard and ticket split, I have pretty much got 58% saving compared to a normal offpeak return.
@SFSEfartman

Also to whose who don't qualify for a railcard, ticket splitting can give you similar savings depending on the stations you use. Same with those who use season tickets, having a split season tickets can give you some more savings.

At the moment there is an added bonus with a Senior Railcard - GWR have an offer if you book before 17/04/18 and travel up until 23/05/18 there is a 50% discount rather than the normal 33% discount - there's always a catch though it's only on certain time trains but if your not bothered what time you travel it's worth having

The problem with advance booking is, you're committed to a specific time. Yes, that is the same "problem" that pretty much all air travel has, but at least with, say, a day return, your options are more flexible. Also, I discovered a problem when trying to use a network railcard on a ticket machine; even if you want to take a train that leaves during the valid period (e.g. after 10 AM), the machine won't let you - you have to get your ticket from an agent.

2022 - I looked at advanced booking online and came to the conclusion for me it wasnt worth it. Ok I would save a little bit of money BUT I would be restricted to travelling on a certain train at a certain time...no problem if there are not disruptions or anything but should something go wrong I think there is not even the chance of a refund though I maybe wrong on that last point. For me ultimately not worth saving 50p with the restrictions and potential for huge problems

Never mentioned the fact that disabled railcard has a 3-year option at £54 compared to the £20 annual fee which still gives great vfm.

Hello, I am 64, my wife is 58. We will be travelling in UK during the next 12 months. Would you suggest we buy a friends and family, two together or what card? Seems to me all cards cost the same and offer same discount. We will be travelling, Gatwick to London, around London, London to Doncaster and back and trips to East Anglia. Seems we can buy on arrival at Gatwick station with proof of age and identity but no photo required for physical rail cards. Thanks in advance

Just had an email asking me to renew my Network Railcard and was offered option of a digital version on my phone which I took upon. Unlike the Network Rail card, you have to provide a photo for the digital one.

I have the 16-25 and been told I cannot use it before 10am - which was great when getting the train from Leeds to Headingley at 10:01 and couldn’t use the ticket barriers until 10!

"A £12 minimum fare applies for journeys starting between 4.30am-10am Monday to Friday excluding Advance Fares. This minimum fare does not apply on Public Holidays or throughout July and August." (source: www.16-25railcard.co.uk/help/railcard-terms-conditions/ , point 7) I am a little surprised at being unable to use the ticket barriers before 1000 with your ticket - though it would not have been valid if you caught a train leaving before 1000.

the fare from LDS to HDY is a standard £2.70, so under the minimum fare David so it may not let them get through with it before 10 unless its over minimum fare?

I didn't know the fare, but knowing the geography I was aware it was a rather short journey and knew there was no way the 16-25 discounted fare being £12 or over. I was just surprised at the barrier programming apparently prohibiting entry with a discounted ticket before the moment the ticket was valid for travel, especially when this may well have the effect of preventing a passenger from catching a train they have a valid ticket for. Ultimately the passenger has the responsibility to be able to produce a valid ticket or pass at any time during their journey, supported by a railcard. At the very least, it would seem appropriate to allow 16-25 discounted tickets below the £12 minimum fare to operate the ticket barriers from 0945 or perhaps 0950 in order to allow people to be in place to catch the first train after 1000. If the passenger uses this small latitude to catch a train their ticket is not valid for, they are liable for the consequences of travel without a valid ticket. The potential for abuse of this relatively small adjustment in barrier timing seems small, especially if local students are aware that manual checks are made on trains they cannot use their 16-25 Railcards to travel on. Automatic barriers cannot guarantee any passenger holds the correct ticket and, where relevant, Railcard for their entire journey. A passenger could go to a ticket machine and buy a child fare ticket (50% of adult fare, so cheaper than a 16-25 discounted ticket which is 66% of adult fare) or a ticket for another railcard type that they do not hold (Disabled Person's perhaps being the favourite, as it is valid all the time). The child fare ticket might be picked up at the gateline if there is an obvious indicator to staff that a child fare ticket has been used as I would expect, but a Disabled Person's Railcard ticket probably would not be picked up unless there was a supplementary manual revenue protection check including inspection of Railcards. Of course, you must have the correct railcard for the ticket you are using - you should not buy a Disabled Person's Railcard ticket if you have a 16-25 Railcard, even if the fare is the same and you would be entitled to use your 16-25 Railcard for discounted travel at the same fare on the train in question. In practice, staff might let it slide as a honest purchasing mistake if the ticket would have been valid for your journey but for the selection of the wrong Railcard type, though you cannot rely on this. Finally, for amusement, I note that there are some local rules that can lead to very strange ticket combinations. www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/transport/bus-pass/rail.aspx is one such exception - a local rail travel concession that allows a Central Bedfordshire concessionary travel pass holder to travel to London on Thameslink via a split ticket combination off peak - a child ticket supported by the concessionary travel pass to the last station where the train stops no further south than Elstree and Borehamwood (this may well be St Albans City if the passenger starts their journey from north of Luton unless they change trains), then onwards to London using an adult ticket, perhaps discounted by a Railcard.

Is a rail card kind of like a "subscription" that gets you discounted rates on tickets?
@trueriver1950

Exactly. You pay up front for one year or three years, and get a 1/3rd discount. Only catch is you have to carry the railcard with you

Another possible way of saving money is by 'splitting' your ticket. You might want to do a video on that too!

Unfortunately your Network Rail area map at 3:35 is incorrect. Ipswich is actually just outside the Network Railcard area! The discount is only valid to Manningtree, when travelling from London on the main line. Whoever decides these things: please include Ipswich in the scheme!

Maxwell Day Advance tickets are ONLY valid on the booked train. So if you want flexibility better to use other more open tickets e.g. Rovers, Day Returns or Travelcards.

You can use the Gold card. Worth having if you spend around £500/year in railfares (including friends when travelling together). Note the stations you ask for in the season ticket have to be in the South East, but you never have to go there to enjoy discounts all over the UK
