After a nice night stay in Monterey, I made my way out to Salinas to utilize my trip to the area and squeeze in some railfanning while I am at it. I had originally expected very minimal activity here at the Salinas Amtrak Station, and ultimately it would be the case initially, but luckily activity changed as the day progressed with a surprising meet ! This station in particular is rather distant from any other metropolitan area, where it solely serves the city of Salinas and Monterey area with only Amtrak’s Coast Starlight. Salinas also serves as the last Northern California stop for the Coast Starlight prior to its next stop in Paso Robles in Southern California. However, it is interesting to note that this station will soon serve as the terminus for the future expansion of rail service from San Jose to Salinas with Caltrain and/or Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains. Utilities can already be seen being installed with surrounding station improvements in addition to new stations being built between Gilroy and Salinas in the near future. Additionally, the Salinas Station still retains the original Southern Pacific Depot and Freight House while also having the Monterey and Salinas Valley Railroad Museum adjacent to the station as well; with a SP 0-6-0 steam locomotive, historic rolling stock, and railroad equipment on display. Although the action here was rather scarce, it is intriguing to know that future rail service will soon join this interesting station and see an equally prosperous transportation center !
Train 1 : Union Pacific LRQ31-13 with GP38-2 #1842(HLCX). After approximately three hours of waiting for a train, LRQ31-13 appears from the north slowly crawling into Salinas to begin its switching activities. Nice crew.
Train 2 : Amtrak 11 (Coast Starlight) with P42DC #63 & 132. This train surprisingly arrived twenty minutes ahead of schedule, making for a nice rest stop for passengers and a perfectly timed meet with LRQ31-13 and many photo ops ! Note the abbreviated consist with only coach accommodations and a lounge car. This is in result to recent track work and subsequent tunnel collapse in Oregon, where Coast Starlight service was shortened to only between Los Angeles and Sacramento. Awesome crew on 11 with some very friendly waves upon departure !
Train 3 : Union Pacific LRQ81-13 with GP60 #1096 & #1037. Nice crew on #1096.
Train 4 : Union Pacific LRQ31-13 with GP38-2 #1842(HLCX). After waiting an hour for Amtrak 11 and LRQ81-13 to pass, LRQ31-13 finally received clearance from the dispatcher to resume switching further south in Salinas while occupying the main line.
Thanks for Watching !
