Fusee, not fuse. Road flare: A flare, also sometimes called a fusée, fusee. Don't let 'em get you down. Either description is correct. Nit-pickers will alaways pick nits!

We called them fusee’s on the railroad I worked on here in Maine.

Flare & fusee are interchangeable by most people. My 2 cents, I think a flare is what is shot up in the air for distress. Fusee is placed on the road or ground as a warning. Put either is correct.

I believe the word is spelled "fusee" for what is now known as a railroad fusee, and it's a safety flare (as opposed to a signal flare which burns quite bright for a shorter timeframe). Haven't been able to properly trace, but I think the word "fusee" was coined from "fuse" which was once the name of what we now refer to as a "match" or, more accurately, a large friction match. Would not be at all surprised to someday learn "fusee" was originally coined by a railroad conductor.

I'm in the UK and we don't use those things. However, I've always thought they were called fusees, as mentioned by several other people in the comments. I had a good chuckle at your throw-away line about people not running them over. Have a good Christmas. Over here no trains run on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (26 Dec), and the railways take advantage of that stoppage to renew lengths of track that might need upgrading. Perhaps the ELS could do the same thing.

Railroad rule books call them "fusees." They look like flares, but they will burn longer.
@buzz191saw8 сағат бұрын
Railroaders call them fuses, cops call them flares. Railroad fuses are usually shorter and burn shorter. Traffic flares are longer have a stand and usually burn approximately 30 minutes.

Fus-ie A Fusee A fuz-iee A fusee is a red signal to the following train. When it burns out then the signal is clear. The flagman drops 15 or 30 minute fusee behind his train if he thinks there is another train close on to his.

😢It is peculiar because if it was for an automobile it was a traffic flare and if it was for railroad use it was a fuse in the Milwaukee Road used to get theirs from a plant in South Beloit IL. Probably to avoid the SD40 on the switch they probably pushed the empties as idlers to grab the loads. I wonder if someone stayed late at Alter to operate their mobile crane to drag the empty . cars back in like last time as the small covered Hopper doesn't quite bridge the gap. Roughly 30 centerbeams going north for a week's worth of production and shipping. Yesterdays FRI DEC 19 Jaw tooth video @17:40. Appeared to have a center beam of siding 3rd car from the rear at night. Thanks for hanging with the train as they might try a quick Southbound Saturday to get rid of one last batch Before Christmas

Note the discharge gates. The car is set up for plastic pellets. Grain cars have a large flat bottom gate for discharge between the rails. I don't know if there is an online customer for the car.

Welcome to English Language 101: Words can have the same meaning, just spelled differently, and their meaning and spelling can change over the years. Both are right/wrong, it all depends on who you talk to and when you/they first learned the word. It helps to have an enforcer at large to keep things in line and simple. Does anybody want to go back to King James English? Anybody??!
@kittty20058 сағат бұрын
They're the same thing but it's french fus`ee, not fuses, Yes they are the same now but there was a time when they lasted much longer than road flares they also have a little devise called a torpedo which is a packet of nitroglycerin about the size and shape of a packet of sugar and is laid on the rail in 3 places at a certain spacing to give oncoming traffic a warning of something fouling the track ahead so they can stop intime. I remembered that I had studied the engineers manual so much when I was younger that I aced the examination ,but gave up because everyone I knew convinced me that railroading would be obsolete. I could have done most anything I had the aptitude for electronics in the navy, but I just gave up and went to building windows in a local factory. Always follow your dream.

A 'fuse' predates the word 'flare' by over 100 years! It a railroad and military term to describe part of the explosive powder used to explode a bomb! In RR terms a fuse was a light explosive charge or package laid across the rail by a brakeman or conductor as a warning to following trains on a track that an incident on the rails lay ahead! It exploded whenever a railcar wheel ran over it. Produces a loud noise and bright explosion to warn the crew
@cris_2613 сағат бұрын
Railroads referred to the light explosive charge placed on the rail head as a torpedo. At least that's what I've seen it called in print.

Why do people always have to mess up train cars by putting their marks on them? That should be illegal, because they are degrading public property.
@MrNorth694 сағат бұрын
You mean private property and it is 100% illegal. problem is they tag them under the cover of darkness..most of it's done in east LA, Chicago and Kansas City where they have huge yards. so I don't it's possible to stop it just based on the sheer amount of tracks and railcars..
