To manage steep grades to the coal mine, try using switchbacks. You can't run a long train through unless you leave the tails long, but it allows you to take a shorter route over higher terrain. It was a common strategy used by logging and quarry railroads of this time period.

Yes , zig zag railroads were very common for steep elevation change. Japan has modern versions of these for mountain passenger services.

I made it to the end of the video but it took me two days. Thankfully I had enough firewood in my train to get to the logging camp to refuel my train as I had asked you how to do that earlier. Then today they add fully stocked firewood depots as default! Oh well, at least I did it the hard way once. :P

A KZbinr called Sevex2020 made some videos about Gradient testing. The Porter can actually manage a 10% Grade with eight loaded cars. The Eureka can only handle up to 5% but then again it's a passenger locomotive not a freight. He hasn't done the other engines yet though. Also perhaps a geared locomotive like the Climax and Heisler would be better suited for the more difficult terrain.
@jamesneumann2003
@jamesneumann2003 2 жыл бұрын
The Heisler is probably the better locomotive for the Iron Ore Mine track, I've hauled 12 flat cars up my track at 55% regulator, no sand and didn't slow down at all. The only thing about the Heisler is it doesn't like being above 59% regulator due to a bug, if it happens just put the regulator to 0 then back to what you need. As slow as the Heisler is, it is definitely worth the purchase.

@@chaos6313 Not really. IRL they have good tractive effort. The thing the game isn't doing a great job of limited speed for the Porter. With the small drive wheels you either over speed the pistons or you just derail at higher speeds. You would also run out of steam at higher speeds as the small boiler just can't keep up with the exhaust rate of higher speeds. The Eureka has small pistons so it doesn't have buckets of torque and it has even larger drivers lessening the torque further. What it gains with the 4 wheel pilot and large drivers is much higher top speed. Really the Eureka is at home pulling an express car and some coaches. We just don't have those yet.

I've had what seemed like random derailments, especially near switches. I found out there is sometimes an invisible object in the track causing derailment. I found it by deleting the track but not the groundwork in that short section. Then I walk very slowly over the area and my player model will "hop up" onto the invisible object. It will only be a few pixels wide. I delete it by slowly panning the delete tool over the area until it also "hops up" onto the object and then deleting it.

An empty hopper is 8,000 lbs. The black Porter has 6,110 lbf tractive effort and is itself 25,000 lbs. So that's 57,000 lbs you were trying to pull up that hill. The Porters are overpowered right now, but not that OP.

I had a similar derailing accident on one of my bridges. After some investigating i discovered an invisible object on the track by walking along it and at a certain spot my player stepped up onto something. After demolishing the invisible object there was no more problem. So what i now do is after i complete a new line i'll take the porter down it with 2 cars going good and slow to check for invisible weirdness. I think the object was a super short piece of track that i accidentally placed down which was too short for the game to render but still physically there.

I have really enjoyed watching your series Kerbo. You mention as a solo player, spotting cars is tough on the some of the narrow drop zones. Even harder the more cars you're dealing with in the consist. Ore mines being one of those. I started putting trestle decking instead of standard rail only where the zone is. It has let me hit the mark 99% of the time now. Much easier to see from a distance and at odd angles. Just wanted to try and give something back :)

Yeah, I watched all the dev streams and they said something about they are still kind of learning UE4 and the built in physics engine doesn't play the way they want it to so they wrote their own but the two systems are fighting. Hence the weird slack issues and wobbly hunting cars. Also, never accidently delete track out from under a pump car. You can't re-rail or move it after that. I even laid some new track under the stuck pump car and it yeeted several hundred feet up in the air but even after it landed it wouldn't let me re-rail it but at least it's no longer in the way. I've just left it where it is for now as an eternal reminder, lol

something something air generator something something maximum power something something cylinder cocks something something On a more serious note, I appreciate the long episode and quite enjoyed it. It definitely looks like the 4% gradient on that portion of the track is a killer. In my world, I managed to get away with following the mountain ledge and maintaining a 3% grade the whole way, but 90% of the route is on trestle at varying elevations above the ground (between 1 and 20 meters). Your route looks better. Curious to see how you lay the track for the Coal Mine.

I don't know how well it is modeled, but to me the Tier 2 Porter would perform worse on pulling a hill. My reasoning is that it is heavier than the T1 by 3k lbs due to the rear truck and mini bunker. It doesn't have any extra tractive effort at all though. I consider the T2 Porter more of a long range version rather than an upgrade in any way. Useful but not better. Greetings from a fellow fedora wearer. Stiff grey felt with a wide brim.

It would be nice if the devs since the puffing along with the simulation of loose steam packings, rod clank, brake squeal, dynamo sound and the sound of the air compressor. Also simulating a boiler explosion. That happens when you let the engine run dry for too long, thus making the crown sheet cave in, thus creating a fatal explosion. Finally, I hope they model in the proper use of the reverser steam cutoff, dirt and grime, along with the ability to clean the locomotive and rolling stock. Plus having the ability to clean out the smokebox and firebox after a hard day's work.

Drop a cut of cars, pull ahead, shove back into an industry, pull ahead, throw the switch back, shove back to the cut you dropped, couple back up and head on down the line; that's real-life railroading for you if you work a local and of course without the local jobs you don't have road trains to haul

@@KerboOnYT I just bought the game because of you still only have Betsy and just finally managed to connect the logging camp and saw mill together. I think I will skip over the Champ and go for the classic 4-0-4 Wild West Engine for my First new one. Wish me Luck with her.

Hey, Kerbo just a heads up when you upload your video it automatically selects Train Simulator as the game you are playing. So you will have to manually choose the game each time you upload. Just so you aren't potentially making some who aren't of some sort of age buy the wrong game.

Well Kerbo :-) Been with you since "The Abandoned Forest" Back in spring '18 and on that series I felt that vibe that I feel from you again now, and that were also around in the beginning of C&C, and that exact vibe is what have kept me around, even though I don't play most of the games you do. BUT, the vibe. :-) Love your videos, especially when that vibe is flowing through to me. I'll hang around and enjoy, your enjoyment of this new "toy"
