Love these trips to small towns out in the country! That kind of action is going away ware I live. Most of it is near the large cities now. A few of our towns have saved their depots but almost all of our rural trackage is just a memory . I should have grown up east of the Mississippi ware I could be enjoying this for real !

I hope folks will pardon me if I reminisce. I was a brakeman for the Houston & Texas Central [SP] back in the day. Terminal was Houston and turn-around was Hearne, Tx, a distance of 125 miles. I quickly had a regular job on the local. We were switching International Shoe in Bryan, Tx. The spur leading in to the business had a deep left curve. Once past the curve, then the tracks straightened, we could throw the switch, and then back straight down the unloading area to spot or pick up box cars. After doing the work, it was time to back out. The other brakeman had gone back to the service road to watch for vehicle traffic. I was riding on the left hand side rear car so the fireman....yes, fireman could relay my lantern signals to the engineer. There was a big gate there and some way some how a big gust of wind blew through and moved one of the gates onto the track. I was frantically giving the stop signal with my lantern, but the train kept coming. I dismounted and since the train was going slow because of the curve, I was able to get in sight of the engineer, who finally stopped the train but only after we had crashed into the gate. I climbed up the engine and entered the cabin all bent out of shape, only to find the fireman....yes, fireman asleep. There was some damage to the gate, and the conductor made a report. I didn't hear anything from anyone after that. I knew the fireman. He had grown up in my hometown of Hearne. He was former Texas DPS trooper, but resigned. He had stopped a vehicle with four occupants around Hempstead, Tx. Said occupants attacked him and the only reason he survived is the fact he was able to hang on to his service revolver and stick the barrel in the mud at the side of a road. He had no chance to bring it to bear. The occupants skeedaddled but were later apprehended. He decided life on the SP was much safer. Thanks, Jaw Tooth, for allowing me to reminisce about the ancient world of railroading.

Just to be clear, its not shunting (shoving cars and allowing them to travel on their own and to be stopped by either gravity or slamming into another car), its switching (spotting cars as needed by way of a controlled means such as a locomotive).
@JawTooth4 жыл бұрын
shunt /SHənt/ Learn to pronounce verb gerund or present participle: shunting 1. push or pull (a train or part of a train) from the main line to a siding or from one track to another. "their train had been shunted into a siding". This is the definition that I am familiar with. I looked for the definition where the railcars travel on their own and I cannot find that. Here is the definition from Wikipedia: Search Results Web results Shunting (rail) - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org › wiki › Shunting_(rail) Shunting, in railway operations, is the process of sorting items of rolling stock into complete trains, or the reverse. In the United States this activity is known as Switching.

Was there any interruption in service during the management transition? Also is that big unit the only power that remains from the CET? Thanks for sharing.73.
@1960gambit6 жыл бұрын
No interruption in service. They have 4 locomotives for now. There are 2 GE units that came from the TTI railroad in Kentucky that the new ownership has purchased. Once those are here, then the 4 current locomotives are headed elsewhere. From everything that has been posted on the Cincinnati Eastern Facebook page, the used locomotives they are getting are of questionable condition. Guess when they get here, we will see if they are in decent shape or not.

@terrywebb14635 жыл бұрын
The CCET is a short line right, how do they justify the use of those humongous locomotives;not that we don't mind,i love'em, but they've got to be costing CCET out the exhaust to keep fuel, up keep, insurance wear and tear on the rails. The longest train that i've seen was i believe was 25 car's long and the 4 axle units was more than enough power to handle the job. I would like to know if they use them or lease them out to other rail lines;and can you tell me what's been the largest, heaviest train you've seen.
@JawTooth5 жыл бұрын
CCET is the only one who uses those locomotives right now. I have seen them pull trains over 70 cars long due to storage cars. This line has steep inclines and sharp curves
@terrywebb14635 жыл бұрын
Do you remember back in the day when a lot of rail lines used of alco units, well my grandpa worked for the sp,i remember him talking about the different locomotives how this company liked these and this engineer liked these etc.etc, he didn't like the alcos, the sp didn't like them or the 6 axle emd's because the long wheel base was stiff and chewed the rails up on steep grades with tight curves. I was just wondering if you've heard about wheel slipping or rail wear on curves

Interesting how the European trains travel about three times faster than the US trains but the European trains have these little wussy whistles or horns. The US trains lumber along but have horns you can hear for a country mile! Just an observation on my part but I sure enjoy these videos of work being done in little out of the way places'' Way more interesting than seeing a frieght run by at 55 or 60 mph.
