I periodically bleach my rain capture barrels. I use garbage bins & flip the lid over & drill a giant hole and cover & seal in fine screen to prevent mosquitoes.

The black is going to make the water hot all the time in the summer. Living in Texas this would be very hot water. My chickens love cool water when it’s 110°.

Black is to keep the sun from making algae grow in the storage. Try placing it in shade otherwise.

Isn’t blue the accepted color for potable water?

You can use either…blue is better for long term storage but I have a lot of chickens so they’ll go through this often enough. It’s also in the shade 👍

Is there a way to heat this system in the winter time? Or will you switch out for heated waterers? I’m definitely gonna do this.. i have many coops/runs that will need water supply. So this maybe the easiest way to achieve it for them all

I’ve been talking to rent a coop. The plan is to drop in a heater and then wrap the pipe in their insulation wraps. Also thinking about a pump that keeps the heated water circulating

I tried 4 different water feeders and failed miserable when the nibble breaks and you lose all the water out of your barrel.in 100° whether or in 20 ° whether you are definitely screwed.

I’ve had it set up for a few months and no issues with it being slimy or dirty. The rent a coop system unscrews very easily so I’ll probably pull the barrel off a few times a year to wash it out

Keep the barrel 100% out of the sun. Also make sure it is food grade plastic.
