I might have understood this wrong, but what I got from Robs explenation, is that the delay should kick in at the upbeat of the next note (so essentially 1.5 beats later) So at 120 bpm that would make for one beat every 500ms; that times 1.5=750ms (exactly double of what you have) Have I got something wrong here? btw i dont have a guitar and amp available to see for myself, so thats why im asking
@IgorsMetallicaFan
@IgorsMetallicaFan 8 жыл бұрын
FuguKing the delay start at 1.5, 1.5 - 1 = 0.5 (difference between the delay start mark and the 1st beat that is ignored), 750x0.5 = 375ms, I'm not sure about it. or it could be the just the tempo, the song actually in 60bpm but played in double tempo, it's a possibility too. IDK... Btw, trust me, delay time it's 375ms

So, my music teacher asked me to play some songs on a national celebration day at school. I went to the event's hall (where the celebration will take place) to practice the songs and warm up a bit. I started playing Rain because I was trying to learn it the day before and after a bit, I realised some people were sitting at the chairs watching me play and a girl told me that the song made her "travel out of this world" and it felt really good. Thanks for this tutorial Rob and the song. Keep it up and I'm looking forward to new tutorials of you!

@the_original_Bilb_Ono
@the_original_Bilb_Ono 4 жыл бұрын
8 years?? What? That's not good.. you should try singing and playing simple open chords. I'm 1 year and 2months in playing guitar, completely self taught online and I can play and also talk / sing, even while finger picking. Whatever you struggle with - do that more. I wonder in the two years since you posted this comment if you've improved. When you posted this comment I had never even held an I instrument of any kind.
@beepst

@@the_original_Bilb_Ono Why is not being able to talk and play at the same time "not good"? Some players don't even care about singing while playing guitar.
@beefybread5769
@beefybread5769 4 жыл бұрын
@@beepst because if you really have been practicing, muscle memory should kick in and you should be able to sing or talk while playing simple things. If you notice, lots of people while playing the piano will start off with some complex melody at the start and then switch to chords once they start singing. And you see the same thing happen when bands play live. The lead singer might play the guitar, but once they start to sing, they switch to normal chords. Now Rob Scallon's Rain might not be made of simple chords, but it is a pretty simple song, and he has played it enough to the point that its muscle memory.

Pro tip: if you have a delay that has a tap tempo with dotted quarter notes as a beat division, tap every other note. You don't need to rely on a specific tempo or BPM setting this way.

You and a bunch of other musician KZbinrs have inspired me to try to learn to play guitar again. I have tried multiple times and wind up giving up and selling it. The last time I tried was a couple years ago, and I was starting to pick it up but I was also going through a bad addiction to a hard drug at the time so I wound up pawning all my gear.... But I am now clean and am more determined than ever to learn to play!

I never really played with delay much until recently because I didn’t quite understand its applicability to give the guitar more presence. I got a DD-3 a couple weeks ago and have been digging it, definitely can’t wait to try this out on it. And as far as feedback on your lesson, it’s a lot to take in as a big picture but the individual chunks breaking down chord shapes and picking styles are coherent and easy to comprehend. To the point where I can probably learn this across the span of playing in a pit today just from remembering your explanations

Hi, 14 y/o guitarist here, I know you will probably never see this, but I just wanted to say thank you. I've had a terrible past few weeks and even the past months have been really harsh and difficult for me. I saw one of your videos on my recommended page and I clicked on it, I've been watching a lot of your videos and I love them. But today, I found your original, Rain, and I fell in love. I quickly searched for a lesson and I found this, I spent some time learning it and getting the delay right on my amp, and I finally learned it. I must've sat in my room for hours just playing Rain on repeat, its the most beautiful guitar work I've heard in a while. While I was playing it I felt calm and just really relaxed in general, which I haven't felt for a while now. The music made me feel like I was a baby being cradled by my mother, just the soft delayed notes echoing back through my ears, it was truly beautiful. I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you for writing this song, let alone even taking the time to make a tutorial. I feel better after just sitting down and playing this, it's quite possibly now one of my favorite songs to play on guitar. Love your music Rob, keep going strong. Peace.

Play guitar as a dare to her spirit to come visit you. 🤷‍♀️❤️ The friend who started teaching me guitar passed away before I could learn very much.... Been continuing to learn ever since, not just because I still want to learn but also to honor his memory.... He was only 47 at the time and there was no forewarning; more or less, a sudden heart-attack. 💔😭 Gavin Dunne's (aka Miracle of Sound) song "Convalescence" (written in memory of his dad) was a great lesson in how music can still connect us to loved ones we've lost.... Even cats. 😻 My border-collie was of course too large to climb up on my shoulders, but he used to lay next to my guitar stand like he was toying with me about maybe knocking it over. 😹 I miss that tuxedoed furball too... 💔💖💔 😔

If you're using software like amplitube 4 the rack setting I used were Digital delay: mode LR, Delay time in 356ms, feedback 20%, filter 9577Hz, mix 55% and volume as it is when you first put the rack into the setup. I'm using the CFH collection Jazz 120 with the Gates clean with the chorus on and the speed and depth at 5. Amp settings below Volume 2.8 Trebble 7.3 Middle 6.3 Bass 5.2 Distortion 0 Reverb 3 With the bright channel on. Cab settings are Stock for mic placement Both speakers are the Brit T12G Condenser mics in a venue setting spaced at 60% width Mic 1 vol lower 5 Mic 2 vol lower 5 Room vol lower 20 DI 0 Main vol centered at 0.

I don't have a delay. So I sort of created a similar effect just as if the delay was more instant by doing double strums on each string combined with palm muted open strings and "note kills" meaning I mute the string to the point of no note being played by just having enough pressure on the string with the finger when the string is as close to it's action as possible. Sounds really cool but a lot more technical. And I'm just an intermediate/camp fire level guitarist who just learns everything I like by ear :) I havn't even properly looked at his playing, I just get an general idea of his hand placements and figure out the myself from there because it's more fun for me.
