Just watched Rainman on Tubi TV for about my 100th time since the 80s. It never gets old and the acting always amazes. Timeless classic.

Shame that Tom Cruise still hasn't won an Oscar yet. He was really credible as Charlie, and it's one of the strongest performances of his career so far.

Rain Man is one of my favourite movies and a very underrated performance by Tom Cruise - who at the time was overshadowed by the showy performance by co - star Dustin Hoffman.

I saw this movie in theaters when I was 10 years old, I went with my grandma and aunt then I begged my mom to take me to see it again a week later. This movie’s so important to me, Rain Man took the love I had for films and cranked it to 11. A classic of classics.

Cruise is solid actor: my faves include Color of Money, Eyes Wide Shut, The Firm, Rain Man w some legendary costars in some films. Watch again and you'll notice in some films he starts out somewhat a despised character but eventually transitions to a hero towards end of films. Very underrated 🌟

I only watched Rain Main tonight for the first time and as an 80's kid I'm honestly ashamed it took me this long. I think 80's Tom is the best version of Tom. No big flashy stunts and sprints. Just acting and nailing it.

Thanks for touching on the point that this film did some harm to the autism community, a group that I'm a part of. To this day in Hollywood autistic characters still demonstrate some of the traits Hoffman displayed, although it has improved quite a bit. When I watch a TV show I pretty much know instantly when they're about to introduce an autistic character by the way they act, and I always groan to my wife. I'm not going to lie, though: sometimes I wish I had gotten savant traits in music or math. I did pick up writing fairly easily and intuitively in school, but I'm not sure if that's in the same league.
@Elora445 Жыл бұрын
I know the feeling - I'm autistic, too. Not a savant either, but I picked up reading at age four. Hollywood has never been and will probably never be all that good at writing autistic people. My favorite autistic characters in series and movies are probably characters that are not actually described as autistic (see: Bones), but that are behaving in very autistic ways. Sometimes it makes me roll my eyes, but sometimes they really nail it. Wish they truly nailed it a lot more often. But sadly, savants seem to be the more interesting side of the spectrum that people want to see.
@SynthMusicWorld Жыл бұрын
@@Elora445 yeah, I was reading at a really young age, too.
@jliller Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on how strictly you define "savant." (The term is often used to refer to someone with exceptional skill in one specific field, not only those with Savant Syndrome.) People with ASD are more likely to have either dyslexia or hyperlexia and either dyscalculia or hypercalculia. If Raymond has hypercalculia and his special interest is numbers then it seems kind of plausible, if exaggerated for the film.
@Elora445 Жыл бұрын
@@jliller Yeah, it depends on where your dysfunctions lie, how high your IQ is and so on. I think what people think of savants only rarely fit with the actual savant syndrome. Also, not all autistic people have one special interest. I have always hated that part. I have not simply one special interest - if one doesn't count knowledge itself as a special interest. Seems unnecessarily rigid to specify it like that. I think it's hard to specify what Raymond might have had or not had. He's more of a stereotype of what people think autistic people is like.

Sometimes I'll watch a movie years later and realize I missed a great performance because it was upstaged by a big star. The Way We Were is a case in point. Robert Redford was amazing in it and had a much more challenging role than Barbra Streisand. He played an unsympathetic character with weak morals, and did it believably by underplaying it. Now when I see it, Barbra stamps and screams, while Redford's character just "is" - which is what it's all about.

Rain man was not very realistic. They promoted the stereotype that autistics are all really good at Math. We are NOT all Math prodigies. I have Asperger’s and I can’t do Math to save my life! I hate it. I have never met an autistic who is extremely good at Math. Some are good at basic Math, but, not anything higher than Pre-Algebra. Most of them that I know can’t do advanced Algebra or Calculus. I don’t act anything like Rain Man at all. Check out the movie: “Please Stand By”. It is a very realistic Autism movie. Much more realistic than Rain Man. It is from 2017 or 18. Staring: Dakota Fanning. They had several autistic people on the set, while they filmed it and the Director was also autistic. That helped a lot to make it more realistic. The autistics on set could tell them if something is not realistic in their experience. The Director really did good to, because he is autistic and he understands it. The only thing that could have made the movie better is if they had used an autistic actor.
