Unfortunately, I had a stroke and lost mobility on my right side, which had been my strongest and dominant side all my life. My therapist recently told me that they were going to try a new therapy that I would enjoy, and when she said, "Garding in small spaces and house plant potting. " I couldn't have been happier. Thanks for keeping me company while I was in the hospital. And, continuing to give me hope that I will one day be able to grow my own foods and cook in my kitchen again. GOD BLESS YOU ❤

Becky just an idea the next time you plant potatoes. I am 80 years old and my dad taught me to cut the seed potatoes where they will have 2 eyes(not plant potatoes whole), you won’t need as many potatoes and it will save you money. Also I am sure it was fun to have the clam digger, but dad just made a long trench 4 inches deep and planted the potatoes 12 inches apart(no digging individual holes) and that is how I plant my potatoes to this day. God bless your wonderful parents and Josh for helping in the garden.
@natashamoore4030

I was going to suggest chitting the potatoes as well. Need to leave the cuts to 'heal' for a bit before planting, though, so they don't rot.

That digger was more trouble than it ws worth, a trench would be much easier, didn't seem comfortable for Dad's back either. Anyway why have your parents work in the cold rain, I am their age and would have said I will help but not in this weather, no planting is that important surely.

One thing I learned while working in a kitchen is, I wear small, form fitting latex gloves under my garden gloves when I'm working with anything that can get them wet. It keeps your hands dry and much warmer. You can wear them over your garden gloves as well. It's a little overkill, but your hands won't be cold and wet while playing g in the garden.

I think I’m capable of climbing in the Himalayas at 73, needing 2 years for getting ready! Most people would say no way, I always think the impossible❤🦋🙏🏻

Next year if you haven't been getting rain before you plant potatoes, use your irrigation system to water the bed you decide to use.

I feel like you needed to rake all the fertilizer into the soil. It's just sitting on the top.

I got the seeding square last year and it is so helpful in small gardens! I put my leeks in the garden today and did a direct sow on my celery. This weekend, I'm gonna put my zucchini and acorn squash in my garden,

We cant have in ground potatoes this year. I noticed last fall that ours had been munched on by wireworms. So no root crops in the ground. We will have lots of containers this year 😅

I plant with my Daddy too. My Momma was the one to can it all up, but we lost her in 2015. One of our therapies was learning how to can the 2015 harvest. We have done it ever since. My Daddy is 82 now and I know, if things go like the universe plans, then I'll be doing it by myself one day...I am learning ALL I can from his knowledge.

@karmenmiles Sorry for your loss. Maybe you can teach someone in the younger generation how rewarding gardening is? And canning,too. Then you won’t need to do it alone when Dad passes.
