The all-purpose, juicy tomatoes make wonderful tomato juice. The juice can be boiled down to make sauce, eaten out-of-hand, or sliced on sandwiches. The juice is best! Big Boy and Early Girl both are good for that. The old fashioned slicing tomatoes are bigger, but I can't remember the name of them. Maybe beef-heart?

One year my dad had a bumper crop of tomatoes. I don’t know what variety planted but he had some huge tomatoes. 1 slice covered a slice of bread perfectly. He said the trick to his bumper crop was a friend of his brought him a load of chicken poo. I was over to his house one day and he was fixing him a sandwich for lunch. It was tomato and peanut butter. It totally grossed me out until he made me try it. OMG it was delicious. He said store bought tomatoes weren’t that good it had to be homegrown tomatoes. I laughed so hard at him but the combination of tomatoes and peanut butter was so good. I haven’t eaten that in years and just thinking about it brings a smile to my face. Miss you Dad and your crazy sandwich combinations 😂😂😂

You could also donate your unwanted seeds to a school that has a gardening program. My students and I garden in our huge raised beds in our courtyard on campus. We would love it if we had seeds donated to us, so I am sure a teacher who works with the kiddos and gardens would love the donation of unwanted seeds.

I had never heard of mortgage lifter tomatoes, and naturally, I had to look up how it got its name. Apparently Byles of Logan, West Virginia after crossing varieties for 6 years and selecting the best, he introduced this beauty that he named Mortgage Lifter in the 1940s, after he sold plants for $1 each and paid off the $6000 mortgage on his house. 🥰

Becky, the difference between the San Marzano 1&2 is that the San Marzano 2 is more resistant to virticillian. They make a wonderful both Marinara sauce and tomato paste because less seeds& water. I use to help my upstairs 80 yr old Italian neighbor when I was 6-9 years old and saw how she made both the Marinara sauce and tomato paste. I remember she did simply the best olive oil & little sea salt in the tomato paste and when I helped her she'd make it in an outsider wood burning brick oven in the yard. The results were just stupendously delicious. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I do a secret extra step and still do both the Marinara and paste in her honor and memory.

Google has an app, I'm not sure if it's available on apple or not but it's called Google lens, and it uses your camera to translate things in real time. So like the image you look at on your phone is in English. It's pretty cool! You can also snap a picture, and it will Google things similar/related. You can also use it to take a pic of a document and then it lets you copy and paste the words into a note on your phone or wherever you need it. So like say you hand wrote a recipe, it would take a pic and notice your handwriting and make it able to be copied so you can paste it wherever online. Just some tips I thought might help you day to day! I use it all the time

Botanical Interests always color codes their seeds in the blends or mixed seed packets so you can figure out what you're planting if you want to split them up. For that Brandywine Tomato, the pinkish seeds are the red tomatoes, and the yellow tomatoes are the natural color. I think it's a cool idea. I love that they do that.

I love the Cherokee purple! I planted them for the first time last year and they were absolutely my favorite. But I noticed it didn’t produce a lot of tomatoes which I was sad about. Hello Becky from a very wet and grey England. I missed the soap making when did you do that ??? For my birthday in January my husband built me two poly tunnels and hip high beds because I need to use a chair sometimes. It is a game changer for me. I have one set up for fruits and the other for veg. I grow my tomatoes in the green house in grow bags. It's easier for me to manage. For the first time EVER I managed to get hold of some seeds for Tomato Black Beauty. Yep BLACK TOMATOES. It’s the darkest tomato in the world with skin packed with anthocyanin (the same antioxidant in blueberries). They are delicious. I've just finished planting Garlic, Garden Peas, Broad Beans, Potatoes 3 different varieties this year. Radish Carrots, Parsnips Brussel sprouts. With more to come. Started on the fruits today until the heavens opened yet again. This channel is wonderful it leaves my brain in peace and happy. Thank You Becky

Hi Becky. Just wondering if you are aware that the reason Americans keep their eggs in a fridge is because the chickens aren’t kept in great conditions so supermarket eggs are washed to reduce the risk of salmonella. Europe’s n / British chickens are kept in better conditions so the eggs aren’t washed. The result is that American eggs have the natural coating washed off. They are no longer sealed so have to be stored in the fridge. As your eggs are free range the best thing you can do is not wash them ( or if poopy just wash them before eating) and store them on the counter top as we do in Europe. Refrigerating them actually increasing the risk of disease because of the higher moisture content. In Europe we keep eggs on the counter top for at least 3 weeks and for baking they will be fresh for at least a month. Hope this is useful. Most Americans I speak to are shocked that Europeans don’t refrigerate eggs. But now you know the reason you shouldn’t either xxxx

I listen to a lot of Old School information about when to plant the garden. I’ve heard that when the trees are budding then plant. Everything is blooming in Texas and it’s already been in the 90’s 😮 . I can’t wait to see your garden this year ❤ again you are a wonderful teacher ❤

For my sweet potatoes I did them in water and in potting mix like a side by side experiment. Laying them on their side in potting mix under grow lights and a heat mat has been amazing! I have so many slips. It's crazy. The one sitting in water still doesn't have any slips at all. Maybe next year you can try putting them in your soil under your grow lights.

I've been using a little more protective procedure. I'm using the same "tweezers" used for nails. I'm going to watch you. I'm planning on moving this year to a smaller home since I'm empty nesting but I love my gardening. Winter in Colorado is unpredictable. I love watching your choices because so far your choices have worked for me. I love having gifts during the holidays from my canning because we have been struggling since our Lay offs. You are Amazing Becky! I love you and your Family!!!!

I’m starting my tomatoes today also! Yeay! This is going to be a great year for me after having several surgeries to get my back where I can stand and walk. My heart is full. Thank you for this show that gets me through the in between. I am battling my Lupus & carrying on no matter what and sharing with my adult kids and grandkids. Learning from you every episode something new. You are a reminder of when I was younger. I am still learning and love watching you share your learning too!

Congratulations on getting your back fixed. Back surgeries are extremely intense. I took care of my sister when she had hers done. Hang in there. I have back issues myself. Too many years of taking care of patients who required lifting, turning and getting them up. Also dealing with patients who were extremely heavy. (900 pounds was our largest) Take care. Have a great day, Debbie Lavigne

@robertlavigne6560 I was an RN hospice nurse. I can totally relate to you. I'd get to a patients house and have to turn or lift them usually by myself. Sometimes a family member would help. Now I'm retired with extensive back problems. That also gives me nerve pain in my legs, along with muscle spasms. I tell my grown kids to get help when lifting anything heavy. No matter how strong you are, your back can only take so much. I would love to plant some tomatoes this year. I have to pot them in big pots because I just can't get up and down too easily. But they make me happy.

Hi Becky! I bet those slider buns are going to rise beautifully (with bread flour) and turn out nice and fluffy! Thanks for sharing your recipe & tips. You are such a character, you make me chuckle with your tomato seeds. No lie ~ one year I had 200 tomato plants!! My Mom jarred soooo many different varieties with tomatoes, but we were very healthy all winter long!! This past Monday I only planted 1 /2 pack of Beefsteak Tomatoes and 1/2 pack of Zinnias til I get back into gardening again! I do Love Cherry Tomatoes & my Mom Loves Roman tomatoes. Happy Gardening Becky! Don’t forget to feed your little feathered friends too!😊

Purple Cherokee is my go-to heirloom variety. I regularly get fruit over 500g each, and the plants are very prolific. Oh, and they taste incredible, too! Here in Australia we are coming to the end of our tomato season but I now have a freezer full to process.

you should draw a diagram of your garden and every time you plant something in the beds, fill it out as you go. Then you can refer to that throughout the season so you don't forget!

Hi Becky! Wanted to mention to you that you will get sweet potato slips that already include little root tendrils relatively quickly if you lay your whole sweet potato horizontally in potting soil. The slips start growing quite rapidly, much much faster than using the toothpicks with potato partially submerged in water. Have watched a couple of gardening shows on KZbin that have experimented with both ways of producing slips & both gardeners got slips growing much quicker planting the potatoes in soil than using the water method. I've personally tried it too & I had slips growing all over the place in a very short amount of time. Thanks & good luck with them! God Bless you & your family always!!!❤

The lather is still great, not a thing wrong with them and they last 5 times longer. Hope this little FYI helps

Hey Becky, one thing I tried this year was drawing a picture of my garden like a landscape map and labeling that instead of labeling each plant. Some of them ended up with labels but some didn't, so now I can refer back to my picture if I'm not sure! Maybe something like that could work for you too? 😊 Happy growing!

Tomatoes and peppers have been my most difficult to grow. Tomatillos, zucchini, corn, beans and pumpkins were easiest for me. I only put the seeds in the ground, I've never done the "grow room" thing, but it is certainly intriguing. You exhibit such joy, in the garden, grow room and kitchen, that you brighten my day. Thank you!

That's why your tomato and pepper plants have been less than successful. They need to be started indoors long before it's time to plant them outside because they take a long time to grow, fruit and ripen. If we were to plant only the seeds outside with everything else, we would get no harvest off them before first frost.

@@Sita1025 you said the "grow room" thing was intriguing and that you had a hard time with those particular plants. I was just explaining why it's so difficult. It doesn't take much space at all. I have a cheap 2 foot wide $20 plastic greenhouse from Amazon in front of a window and it allows me to start my entire garden inside before the last frost date so I can get a jump on things. For a garden as large as yours it seems a little strange not to start seeds indoors as recommended by on the packets by seed companies.

@@melaniecalderon8973 Honestly, until I found this channel, I had never even heard of anyone starting seeds inside, unless they were growing something illegal!! I did find that growing tomatoes inside tires is better - the black rubber heats up the soil and they are happier. Got all my growing advice from my MIL and FIL. I'm intrigued by the "greenhouses" that use a glass door/window on top to regulate the temps. None of the things Becky has for her grow room are familiar to me. Love learning from her and others here.
Plant it ONCE and Enjoy for YEARS to come!
