Tip for the eggs: they keep longer (3 to 4 weeks at room temperature) if you do not wash them. Just give them a quick wash with antibacterial dish soap directly before you use them if you want to eat them raw. Washing them takes away the protective membrane of the shell and refrigerating them makes the inside shrink, thus "sucking in" air and germs that would usually just sit on the outside without doing any harm. We've had chickens since my early childhood (over 50 years) and have used and eaten dishes with raw eggs without any problems.

One year my dad had a bumper crop of tomatoes. I don’t know what variety planted but he had some huge tomatoes. 1 slice covered a slice of bread perfectly. He said the trick to his bumper crop was a friend of his brought him a load of chicken poo. I was over to his house one day and he was fixing him a sandwich for lunch. It was tomato and peanut butter. It totally grossed me out until he made me try it. OMG it was delicious. He said store bought tomatoes weren’t that good it had to be homegrown tomatoes. I laughed so hard at him but the combination of tomatoes and peanut butter was so good. I haven’t eaten that in years and just thinking about it brings a smile to my face. Miss you Dad and your crazy sandwich combinations 😂😂😂

You could also donate your unwanted seeds to a school that has a gardening program. My students and I garden in our huge raised beds in our courtyard on campus. We would love it if we had seeds donated to us, so I am sure a teacher who works with the kiddos and gardens would love the donation of unwanted seeds.

Becky, the difference between the San Marzano 1&2 is that the San Marzano 2 is more resistant to virticillian. They make a wonderful both Marinara sauce and tomato paste because less seeds& water. I use to help my upstairs 80 yr old Italian neighbor when I was 6-9 years old and saw how she made both the Marinara sauce and tomato paste. I remember she did simply the best olive oil & little sea salt in the tomato paste and when I helped her she'd make it in an outsider wood burning brick oven in the yard. The results were just stupendously delicious. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I do a secret extra step and still do both the Marinara and paste in her honor and memory.

Fiasco: the last time I spoke to someone and didn't realize he didn't understand I was trying to explain to double-bag my collected garbage bags and leave the room stripped as is. Don't re-make it: the exterminator is coming for bedbugs. And the door has to stay closed for positive virus-room. He nodded. He was in there a long time. I checked and he was sitting in a chair toward the window in a perfectly remade-up room smiling and filming himself on the phone with his gf in his best light. ugh. I had to tear it all apart and try, try again. Better translation would have been KEY! ; )

A trick I do for flat buns is to place another sheet of parchment on top of the rolls and put a cookie sheet on top of the dough to bake. They flatten out beautifully and look more like store bought buns. I bake them close together so you can pull them apart when they spread.

I started tomatoes for a friend and myself. I only wanted 1 indeterminate and the rest were going to my friend. I put in 2 seeds per cell and all of them germinated. I actually ended up with 9 tomatoes plants. I used a heat mat and grow lights and they germinated in 4 days. They are sweet 100 cherry tomatoes. I have already had to up pot them and now I have to do it again. All my other tomatoes are bush tomatoes. My last frost date is April 8. My grow area is in the laundry room which is warmer. I think that’s why they are growing so well. I’m waiting to start my zucchini and squash another 2 weeks. Happy planting!!!! Blessings❤️🌺

If you get some plastic dome covers for your starting trays, they will germinate faster. Plus, the domes are tall enough to not contact the plants. The domes retain moisture like a mini greenhouse.

The all-purpose, juicy tomatoes make wonderful tomato juice. The juice can be boiled down to make sauce, eaten out-of-hand, or sliced on sandwiches. The juice is best! Big Boy and Early Girl both are good for that. The old fashioned slicing tomatoes are bigger, but I can't remember the name of them. Maybe beef-heart?

Now I'm retired with extensive back problems. That also gives me nerve pain in my legs, along with muscle spasms. I tell my grown kids to get help when lifting anything heavy. No matter how strong you are, your back can only take so much. I would love to plant some tomatoes this year. I have to pot them in big pots because I just can't get up and down too easily. Google has an app, I'm not sure if it's available on apple or not but it's called Google lens, and it uses your camera to translate things in real time. So like the image you look at on your phone is in English. It's pretty cool! You can also snap a picture, and it will Google things similar/related. You can also use it to take a pic of a document and then it lets you copy and paste the words into a note on your phone or wherever you need it. So like say you hand wrote a recipe, it would take a pic and notice your handwriting and make it able to be copied so you can paste it wherever online. Just some tips I thought might help you day to day! I use it all the time

Hello Becky from a very wet and grey England. I missed the soap making when did you do that ??? For my birthday in January my husband built me two poly tunnels and hip high beds because I need to use a chair sometimes. It is a game changer for me. I have one set up for fruits and the other for veg. I grow my tomatoes in the green house in grow bags. It's easier for me to manage. For the first time EVER I managed to get hold of some seeds for Tomato Black Beauty. Yep BLACK TOMATOES. It’s the darkest tomato in the world with skin packed with anthocyanin (the same antioxidant in blueberries). They are delicious. I've just finished planting Garlic, Garden Peas, Broad Beans, Potatoes 3 different varieties this year. Radish Carrots, Parsnips Brussel sprouts. With more to come. Started on the fruits today until the heavens opened yet again. This channel is wonderful it leaves my brain in peace and happy. Thank You Becky

Apparently Byles of Logan, West Virginia after crossing varieties for 6 years and selecting the best, he introduced this beauty that he named Mortgage Lifter in the 1940s, after he sold plants for $1 each and paid off the $6000 mortgage on his house. 🥰

Becky, I don't care what kind of tomatoes you're planting. I just love watching your excitement and inspiration! Also, do you ever use the molds for hamburger and hotdog buns? If so why and what do you recommend?

Hi Becky! I bet those slider buns are going to rise beautifully (with bread flour) and turn out nice and fluffy! Thanks for sharing your recipe & tips. You are such a character, you make me chuckle with your tomato seeds. No lie ~ one year I had 200 tomato plants!! My Mom jarred soooo many different varieties with tomatoes, but we were very healthy all winter long!! This past Monday I only planted 1 /2 pack of Beefsteak Tomatoes and 1/2 pack of Zinnias til I get back into gardening again! I do Love Cherry Tomatoes & my Mom Loves Roman tomatoes. Happy Gardening Becky! Don’t forget to feed your little feathered friends too!😊

Botanical Interests always color codes their seeds in the blends or mixed seed packets so you can figure out what you're planting if you want to split them up. For that Brandywine Tomato, the pinkish seeds are the red tomatoes, and the yellow tomatoes are the natural color. I think it's a cool idea. I love that they do that.

I've been using a little more protective procedure. I'm using the same "tweezers" used for nails. I'm going to watch you. I'm planning on moving this year to a smaller home since I'm empty nesting but I love my gardening. Winter in Colorado is unpredictable. I love watching your choices because so far your choices have worked for me. I love having gifts during the holidays from my canning because we have been struggling since our Lay offs. You are Amazing Becky! I love you and your Family!!!!

I love what you are doing to your grow room. I was thinking when you bring the back metal cabinet back in if you put it back closer to your water heater you may have room for another growing stand to the right of it. Good luck this growing season!

I love the Cherokee purple! I planted them for the first time last year and they were absolutely my favorite. But I noticed it didn’t produce a lot of tomatoes which I was sad about. I also had the brandy wine hated those. Those were like I can’t even explain the middle of those but to me not enjoyable. But you might have better like with them. Maybe I did something for them to turn out the way they did.

I know Google has a voice translator. I have used it to understand what someone was saying to me and I was able to utilize reverse translation so they could understand me. You may want to see it Google has a similar app to help translate your seed packets into English so you could understand what the requirements are to grow them. Happy growing!

For my sweet potatoes I did them in water and in potting mix like a side by side experiment. Laying them on their side in potting mix under grow lights and a heat mat has been amazing! I have so many slips. It's crazy. The one sitting in water still doesn't have any slips at all. Maybe next year you can try putting them in your soil under your grow lights.

Purple Cherokee is my go-to heirloom variety. I regularly get fruit over 500g each, and the plants are very prolific. Oh, and they taste incredible, too! Here in Australia we are coming to the end of our tomato season but I now have a freezer full to process.

you should draw a diagram of your garden and every time you plant something in the beds, fill it out as you go. Then you can refer to that throughout the season so you don't forget!

I know you aren't wanting to grow small tomatoes this year, but if you haven't grown Black Crimm, you should try them. They are a dark purple color and very dense in flesh. They are the best flavored tomato I have ever eaten and I'm a tomato connoisseur.

Becky I have been making soap for about 10 years now. I never use my soap before 6 weeks and really the longer it cures the longer it lasts. I have some bars I made years ago and they are rock hard. The lather is still great, not a thing wrong with them and they last 5 times longer. Hope this little FYI helps

Hey Becky, one thing I tried this year was drawing a picture of my garden like a landscape map and labeling that instead of labeling each plant. Some of them ended up with labels but some didn't, so now I can refer back to my picture if I'm not sure! Maybe something like that could work for you too? 😊 Happy growing!

Hi Becky! Wanted to mention to you that you will get sweet potato slips that already include little root tendrils relatively quickly if you lay your whole sweet potato horizontally in potting soil. The slips start growing quite rapidly, much much faster than using the toothpicks with potato partially submerged in water. Have watched a couple of gardening shows on KZbin that have experimented with both ways of producing slips & both gardeners got slips growing much quicker planting the potatoes in soil than using the water method. I've personally tried it too & I had slips growing all over the place in a very short amount of time. Thanks & good luck with them! God Bless you & your family always!!!❤
