I had the same thoughts about Riggs’ immune system. Becky’s diet during pregnancy, the fact that he was breastfed, and the fact that he will grow up on organic home grown food, including fermented foods along with exposure to the rich soil in their garden pretty much guarantee that this baby is going to have a very healthy gut biome…and immune system.

The eclipse was amazing but the timing was awful for gardening. We returned last week from our own road trip and family visit. After hitting the ground running, most of the direct sowing and transplants are in, but there's still bulb onions to plant. That drill trick looks handy. It's fun to see your sweet baby helping himself to strawberries. What a good job you are doing with your family.

You're right, pill bugs have made me decide to get my strawberry plants off the ground, somehow. I've seen them piled up inside a strawberry chomping away, so I don't believe the experts, either, lol. Go, Riggs, Go!! 🙂 Everything looks so beautiful, great job!

Idk if you do this already but instead of thinning the carrots, wait & do it when youre making smoothies so you can use them in it. That way they get to grow a little & you get to use them. Being organic you can use the whole thing❤

I've had the same issue with pill bugs, even without the plants being covered. I've had them eat several of my young seedlings before. People in Facebook groups told me it couldn't be them until I presented evidence (pics) showing them actually on the seedlings chomping away... putting holes in them.

Carrots are hard to get going but well worth it. For the first time ever I'm using my own seed saved seeds. Last year I had some carrots that survived the winter so I let them bloom and got tons of seed heads. Now to see what they will produce. My strawberries are all outside and have blooms and small green strawberries. Just a couple more weeks here in zone 7. The #1 goal of every gardener= less weeding! God bless y'all and keep growing.

Great start to this year's garden! I hope you update us on your experiment with the strawberries (in tunnel vs. outdoors). I've had the same problem with pill bugs before in the past. Everyone said it wasn't the pill bugs. But I came out at night and saw them myself. It was the pill bugs.

In Germany here and we had -0.5 degrees celsius this morning haha and my husband put the frost cover on my car. Our 'official' last frost date for our region is 8 May. It was rather scary to see white all over the fields these last few days. I am so thankful I was too busy to direct sow and definitely pleased my babies are all happy and warm in the greenhouse haha! This weekend we will get outside and start sowing onions, carrots, leeks and the rest of the gang. If we are 'too early' and frost hits... all good, we will sow every week.

So jealous of the strawberries! I had to restart my patch this spring, so I doubt I'll get many this year. I understand the rushed feeling. I feel very behind as well. I forgot how much work a newborn is, and trying to juggle her needs with starting the garden has been rough. My tomatoes and pepper seedlings mostly failed to thrive so I restarted some last week and will pot up the survivors and see if they will keep going before going outside next month. I'm hoping my Utah summer doesn't get too hot and make a mess of things 😅

You are so lucky you know what's in the dirt/grass that you put your baby on. Many of our neighbors spray their lawns and it rains so much here...I get nervous about what my son could be in contact with. We still go outside but it's on my mind.

pill bugs have been the biggest pest issue i've had, DE doesn't work for me. ducks do, though! and the hot weather. i don't dare mulch around my plants until around june-ish when the sun really starts baking the soil because of the pill bugs. i've lost so much due to those stinkers. thank you for your videos, whenever i get down about my own garden, i see others like you doing it well and it gives me renewed motivation

Pill bigs are my biggest pest too! I have to put cardboard or plastic “collars” around most things that I direct seed or they will just mow all the new starts down. Very frustrating!

Last year was my absolute worst year for pill bugs. They ate all of my green bean and okra seedlings. The only thing that ended up working was putting cardboard or plastic “collars” around all my direct sown seeds, and sometimes they climbed those too 😢

@@anonanon1982 I noticed anywhere near mulch (flower beds) or concrete near soil was WAY worse. I had some pots on my porch last year that got decimated. I think they hide in the mulch or along the side of the concrete and come out at night. I tried the potato trick and it kinda worked. I think it was more of a distraction for them lol.

@@letssummondinner I resorted to getting a container of Sluggo Plus from Home Depot this year. I haven’t really used it yet so I don’t know if it will have an impact. It’s not only that they eat my little seedlings, it’s also totally disgusting for me to go out anytime between dusk and dawn and see hundreds of them crawling all over my food. I mean, I know bugs are on veg gardens, but this was a whole other level.

When you were preparing soil for planting potatoes. Soil was very packed together. It is better to turn soil before winter. It will be much better to work with it in early spring. I like your videos abd wish you all the best.

put mowed grass at the base of lemon trees for better fruit, my lemon trees were not bearing fruit for 3 to 4 years, heard about this method from someone and after doing this they started bearing fruit like crazyyyyy.....

Our biggest pest up north is earwigs. They eat other pests but also munch on any leafy veggie in the garden. In wet weather, I'm forced to sprinkle some DE around the base of the plants. Knocks down their population. 😊 Love watching Riggs munching as he scoots along. 😅

We live in a high mountain desert climate… no slugs anywhere in our area and we have had the same issue with strawberries in our greenhouse. I thought at first it was mice but it is definitely pill bugs that have been eating our strawberries. I think they could for sure be your culprit!

I can imagine how stressful it is to start everything 2 weeks behind when you grow all the veggies you eat! Right now my garden is recreational as I just started last year. This year I'm beginning to get my fruits taken care of first. Strawberries galore because my first baby will be a toddler next year and I would love to be able to feed him all the berries he wants!

The pill bugs have been very aggressive this spring in the high tunnel! They chewed the bases of a tray of tomato starts and killed them, I've never seen them do that much damage.

Definitely could be the pill bugs! I was shocked to catch pill bugs going to town, munching fresh gladiolus blooms whose stalks had been knocked to the ground during a storm in my garden last summer. I thought slugs were the culprit as well until I caught the pill bugs in the act--in broad daylight!

Pill bugs are very annoying! They definitely eat the strawberries. I have literally seen them eating them enough to know they are a bug problem. I have been using cut citrus to attract them and them shake them if in the trash. They are over running in my greenhouse!

@@taranr1242 I cut up toilet paper/paper towel cardboard tubes and plastic water bottles and place the ring around the seed. Most of the time the pill bugs can’t climb the ring to get to the new seedling. I try to aim for a couple inches tall.

Becky, why are you fighting the weeds? Why are t you covering it with leaves/pine straw. I’m also in Arkansas. I’ve gardened in North Central and Southwest. We just take it from the tree line and it works wonderful. Plus, it inoculates native soil with native bacteria. I have 100lbs of potatoes planted and we mulched them. No weeds and they are thriving. The time it took me was minimal compared to the weeding I e had to do in the past.

I saw this thing where you take aluminum screen or steel screen I can't quite exactly remember right now but this guy made like he took like a rectangular piece and then bent the sides it wasn't necessarily screen I think I'm sorry I'm not really remembering it correctly but anyways he made it so it was like a little table and he put it down and it was about an inch or two above the ground. Probably just about an inch but anyways he put the strawberry that was growing on top of that steel or aluminum I can't remember now

9:47 i know you mentioned you aren’t “tilling” but tech you are disturbing the microbial life by tilling the top. Why not no-till it fully, and layer? Lasagna Gardening? Edit: oh i see you are out of compost…ok makes sense.
