I decided to do this with survivor like was recommended, and now I’m thinking about the implications on monk’s story. Survivor never goes to the void, never arrives at the slugtree… to Monk’s knowledge, their sibling just… disappeared off the face of the earth. They don’t know Survivor is kept in an unending limbo, not quite an echo, but the closest thing there is to one. And what about Survivor? None of the other creatures were able to break out of their stasis, so why would they? When will they realize the truth of their situation? Cracks will show, eventually. Can they even leave this fake slugtree? What about all those other creatures, who’ve been trapped for centuries, abandoned by their so-called “friend”? At least, in the void sea, it doesn’t matter if what they’re seeing is real, because they’re free. And besides, all living things will eventually escape the cycle, so it might as well be. Here, there’s nothing but delusions and unending dreams.

That Benefactor who created Preservatory had a flawed vision. Sure, the Void may turn you into an Echo, but at least ascension is absolute and irreversible. Preservation? It has flaws. Look at how Hunter still succumbs to its illness, it's not out of the question something similar could happen to any other creature. And what if the systems break? Then your false little Nirvana is over.

@@blackcat2333 I imagine that’s what happened to the grey lizards and paralyzed monster-kelp you find though-out the region. Being broken out of that limbo-state must have had irreversible effects on their minds, making them spacey, if not near-schizophrenic, from being forced back into reality without warning. That’s why they don’t move very much. They can’t tell if they’re dreaming or not. And without any real sources of food or water, apart from each-other, I don’t imagine they’ll last much longer, least of all during Saint’s time.

I have mixed feelings too, god damm Okay yeah, the Hunter one sold me on it, I do not think this is a 'better' ascension method, especially since the slugcat is still kept alive in that state, maybe not as bad as an echo where they're stuck in the skies forever looking down at their favourite place change over time before their own eyes with them being unable to do anything about it. The idea of just keeping a creature alive against their own will to me is very.. yeah.. That aside this mod and the concept is really cool! I cannot imagine the time it took to make all of this

They really popped off with this region. The lore fits almsot perfectly with canon, the design and atmosphere is extremely reminiscent of vanilla rain world, and the endings are exactly as bittersweet as the vanilla endings. And thats just the tip of the iceberg... So much to praise here :)

I had a story idea for my own scug story before i saw this in my recommended. The iterator that communicated with my scug puts him in a type of preservatory like this one at the end of his lifespan/cycle, minus the dreaming bit, endlessly sleeping for all its eternity til the body deterioates. His dna is what gets used to create the slugcats of today, a little bit of a prequel thing i was thinkin of. I thnk that would be neat.

If I have to guess Monster Kelp will not notice you if you slowly move. As such it's why one outright didn't notice you and why one only noticed at the last second. Other then that the Area looks very cool!

I really like the idea this mod is centered around lore-wise, it just turns the cycle into a sort of permanent death like the real world! I didn't take it as a happy dream at first, but as them just keeping their body sort of "frozen", so they're "alive" but constantly unconscious and as such, forever dreaming. I'm honestly surprised I haven't heard the idea be considered before! Just keep their body alive but brain unawake, its amazing!

Honestly we need more fan content that questions Void Fluid and Ascension. I've never thought the Slugcats would want to ascend like the Ancients did. Also, the implication that all those lizards you find in the fluid were alive, but just... Not there, is so weirdly horrifying Another ancient questioning Void Fluid is great, we know they existed in lore, everything wasn't in any way a Utopia for the ancients and they really seemed to be fascist monks more than anything. Honestly, this entire thing was more interesting than the entirety of Downpour.

Considering how difficult it is to survive at all in Rain World, I've always imagined that the reason the Slugcats wanted to ascend was because of the promise of a more peaceful existence. Like, even if Survivor and Monk did manage to reunite in the Outer Expanse, there's no guarantee that they'll be happy forever after that point. One of them could get carried off by a vulture, or eaten by worm grass, or even another freak storm like the one seen in the intro cutscenes could sweep them away again. In the Void, they wouldn't have to worry about that anymore, they could be together forever.

The fact that the final chamber is marked by a shelter symbol, and it is, ultimately, the slugcat's last hibernation, the final, and biggest, shelter from the living world it could ever have. Safe and happy in its dream, but in reality perpetuating a sad half-existence without meaning or importance. The ultimate symbol of purgatory.

SPOILERS: Y’know, the worst bit about all this is that this mod probably has what could easily be considered the best Artificer ending. Not consumed by genocidal rage, and not eternally stuck between planes of reality forced to watch the heat death of the universe, but in stasis with the dream of their pups, for however long it takes for the technology to fall into ruin and decay. THIS is the only way they gets peace, and wow! It still sucks!

What i can infer from the design of this map This is clearly a last ditch effort made to preserve animal life after the ancients vanished since the lower areas of the preservatory are pristine with little to no moss. Considering that the slugcat can inhale the liquids in the tanks and still breathe, its safe to assume that the liquid in these tanks keeps animals alive. I assume they are in a medically induced coma since the slugcat doesn’t get knocked unconscious by the liquid. I assume a small memory construct is what is regulating the pods considering the iterator arrays seen in the map

Now I'm curious about the kelp.... was it put in there to dream as well? Or is it just some kind of test to see if things are still alive in the fluid? Also, if this is used void fluid, that would mean that it would have to have been taken from ancients who used the void baths. If the pearl is true, then would that mean that those ancients are condemned to exist as impure fluid forever? That would mean that some individuals have to basically sacrifice their lives for others to have that eternal bliss.
