I sat beside a sound keyboard operator on a plane early in 1976 back to the states, that informed me that Rainbow would be in Cologne Germany in September that year & not to miss it. He explained the million dollar or so rainbow lighting that was to be in that concert. I finally went back to Germany & found out the concert date so I got a couple of tickets. The concert hall was a classical hall that the ushers would take you to your seat with a flash light. The hall was packed with Polizei (Police) & the crowd was seated & tense. Ronnie, Powell, Bain, Carey & Richie came out on stage & sensed the tension due to all the cops. Ronnie grabbed a mic, walked to the edge of the stage, yelled in the mic & with his arm he motioned the crown to the stage & said, "come on". EVERYBODY stood up & rushed the stage. The Polizei could do nothing. A friend & me managed to reach about the 3rd row on stage left, right in front of Richie. 4 channel stereo was the rave back then & Rainbow had speakers forward stage & sound coming from far behind us also. The silk screen with the rainbow & hand would breath with the building & would move forward & backward as if it was coming at you. We did "rooms" that night & it seemed we were entering a time tunnel. It was so awesome. It was the loudest concert I ever went to. Richie played so fast, it just took you to another place. Will never forget that night.

"Rainbow Rising" was THE dream-team album of 1976. I mean, come on, Ronnie Dio, Cozy Powell AND Ritchie Blackmore in one and the same band? Right? Pinch me. Well, don't, because I lived those times and I bought the album. Listened to it back in 1976 and went batshit crazy. Still haven't recovered, to be honest, but hey, that's how life goes, ainnit? Hugs and kisses from Belgium.

Thanks for the reaction Elok, well done. I think the overall message of Stargazer/Light in the Black is to be bold and find your own purpose in life, and work towards that, rather than blindly following and working to fulfill the vision of others. A very important message, in my humble opinion.

When you did the reaction to Deep Purples Live version of Burn there's a huge rainbow on stage. There is probably no connection but Richie Blackmore who was with Deep Purple at the time is now with a band called Rainbow..Plus your history of these bands are awesome your a born music historian

RIP Cozy and Ronnie............ I think your next track with RJD on vocals should be 'Gates of Babylon'. Then 'Tarot Woman', 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves', 'Black Sheep' and the On Stage version of 'Mistreated' (origianally a Deep Purple song). I saw Rainbow for the first time at The Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park...... Rainbow at the Rainbow.. how cool's that? They always put on a show. .

1976, this album changed the world. The culmination of everything from Deep Purple - In Rock on to create the blueprint for power metal. This song is the partner to Stargazer, continuing the story after the Wizard failed to fly from his tower of stone. There has been some notes about the songs being influenced by a 1954 film called "The Silver Chalice" starring Jack Palance

I am so happy to be listening to Light in the Black :) Great song and one of the forerunners to the galloping style other bands started doing later. Not that I am a great fan of what became of NWOBHM very much though, in small doses for me, as I am far more rooted in the classic hard and heavy rock.

Hi Elok, A hard rocking song when heavy metal was in it's infancy, I was a metalhead when I was a teen and Ronnie James Dio and Richie Blackmore were the best. On your next reaction you should react to a newer band called Slipknot and the song "Psychosocial", It's a Banger

I bought this album when I was in high school. The song is side B. You should have heard of Stargazer. It is B side. In other words, Stargazer and this song are a set of two. It only makes sense to listen to it in a row. Only these two songs are included on the B side. I'm going home! Freedom from the darkness.

Great choice of song, and I agree with you that Dio-era Rainbow was the band at its finest. Graham Bonnet replaced Dio after he left, so check out “Since You’ve Been Gone” for an indication of the more commercial direction the band took. Cozy Powell apparently hated the change and quit soon after, and Bonnet only lasted for one album. Blackmore was irritated by the fact that Bonnet wouldn’t grow his hair long, and his image was totally wrong for a heavy metal band. Great voice though. Bonnet was replaced by Joe Lynn Turner (whom Blackmore called “Jolene”) and the band started to sound more like Foreigner or Bad Company, alas. I’m looking forward to your next video! Rock on! 🤘🏻

Some good points but also a lot of nonsense. Blackmore irritated? Was he ever anything else? He auditioned & recruited Bonnet & then complained about his image????? Blackmore is one of my favourite guitarists but has a terrible manner & attitude.

I have to say this was an amazing song, I recommend you to listen and react to the entire RAINBOW RISING álbum. Also you have to know that Deep Purple is the origin of three great bands: RAINBOW, IAN GILLAN BAND (later only GILLAN) and WHITESNAKE, this one led by the great David Coverdale, and you must listen to him, because he had wonderful musicians with him, like IAN PAICE AND also JON LORD. I recommend you begin with a classic tune called FOOL FOR YOUR LOVING. And here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaXdn5uegLSKa80
