If your solid fuels are not dissolving into the methanol... then it will never get up inot the wick to be ignited. You need to find a liquid they will dissolve into, and then mix the LIQUID version with the methanol, if that will not cause a bad chemical reaction, and THEN it should burn nicely. :-)

Agreed. I did this one before with boric acid. I think I didn't use enough, but in my experience getting it dissolved is the key for the capillary action to work properly--it is like a paper chomatography effect.

Using an old green garden hose, and a piece of copper pipe, works very well in a camp fire. Cut piece's from the hose, and place inside a copper pipe. Smash both ends flat, and save it for your next camp fire. Great greens & blues. Really fun to slip in the camp fire without anyone knowing.

Your Senpai, there's no black colored fire or even close to black because black is the absence of light. The closest is burning hydrogen which produces an almost invisible flame because it produces mostly UV light.

dakota now here is the reason people need to have a science degree, the change of flame colour is Not a chemical reaction, taking CuSO4 as an example, the thermal decomposition temp of which is well above 600C , by submerging in burning methanol is nowhere close to that temperature, what really happened was , the energy released by the combination reaction of methanol excites the electrons of Cu to higher energy level, when they return to their original energy level, the excess energy is released in the form of electromagnetic wave , which is light if their wavelengths happen to fall in the range that can be detected human naked eye.

I always have a mini heart attack when you just expose lithium from the batteries like that haha! xD As a G1 metal it reacts violently with water - even water in the atmosphere, it's why its normally stored in liquid paraffin. I mean lithium in batteries isnt pure lithium, but its nice to know Energizer batteries use the better stuff lol!!

The lithium strips in the batteries can react with the moisture in the air and ignite. When you put lithium in water it will start sparking and eventually it will burst in to flames.

Following on from the flame colours, I think it would be very interesting to try making DIY catherine wheels (you know the spinny firework things?) with different coloured flames.

Ok here is a small tip. The metal salt should heat up to give the characteristic color. The best technic to do this is to put a little bit of crushed salt on the wick and burn it.

I have made miniature mediaeval thermal ammunition by wrapping pebbles in twine, I bet by using the color coded fuels by identify which ammunition is need. Green for fear and plague, reddish pink for the signal to the Warp(Warhammer reference)

Anhydrous copper sulfate is more of a white color so you probably used a salt hydrate like CuSO4·(H2O)5. I think it might work better if you were to first burn all the water off of it first.

I think most of us have seen the tinfoil boat floating on sulfer-hexaflouride, and we've heard what it does to your voice, but what else floats on top of it? Balloons? Ping Pong Balls? Bubble wrap? Styrofoam? Film canisters? empty bottles?

I know I’m a little late but do you think any of these would work in a zippo lighter? I imagine they would, since it works on the same principles, but I was wondering if it was something you’d consider trying.
