How to crochet a big, billowy hood like the one elf character Tauriel wears in the Hobbit movies. With a slight different shade of green this could be Merida's Hood from Brave! Hoods are a great accessory especially when you don't always want to wear a hat on your head. This pattern is super simple & be sure to adjust it to your needs (materials, size, gauge, measurements/style, etc...)

Just finished this hood and I love it. I used two skeins of worsted weight merino I got from knit crate box that I have been wanting to use for almost a year now but couldn't find the right pattern. So glad I found yours. I added a bit of decoration in the cowl, some extended sc, a row of puff stitch, a row of shells and finished off with a picot round. Clever design!! Now I will look at the rest of your patterns.

Wow, sounds cool! I made my years ago and will now made a second one as soon as I finnish shawl I will attach it on. You gave me idea about making other changes instead of just making it bigger. I wanted to look like an assasin with my mask on. A detail or two of something wild will make it look even better!

@@lampyrisnoctiluca9904any chance you would know what length/how many chains to start for your starting chain, if using a size 8 mm hook and size 6 super bulky yarn?

This comment is for anyone needing help with the hood pattern. This comment is long so be warned! I tried to be as detailed as possible I hope it helps for those that need it!! But for the hood you would chain up 27 then do a half double crochet into the 3rd chain and every chain there after. Once you get to the last one put three half doubles in that same stitch and put a place marker in the middle one. Not counting those two extra half doubles you should have 26 stitches including the chain two at the beginning of the row! After doing the 3 half double crochet stitches in the last stitch you will work in the bottom of the foundation chain you should make a total of 25 half double crochet stitches this will give you a total of 26 when counting the extra one from our 3in1 stitch. We will not be counting the center one in any of our rows, but you do need to mark it because you will be increasing into that stitch every row. Once you have finished going down the other side of the foundation chain and have a total of 26 stitches on each side(the first one is a chain up of two where you started. It will be hard to see) plus an extra one in the center. Do a chain up of 2 and turn the work (we will be going back up the side we just did we are making a big U shape!) And into the 2nd stitch do a half double crochet and continue until you get to your stitch marker. Into that stitch do 3 half double check stitches, place the stitch marker into the center one and continue down you should have 26 stitches to do after the 3in1! Once this row is done you should have 27 stitches on either side not counting the center stitch with the stitch marker! You will continue this same thing for a total of 14 rows you just finished row 2 so you have 12 left once you finish row 14 you should have 39 stitches on each side not counting your center stitch. Then after that you will continue to do rows of half double crochet stitches but without increasing the center stitch. Of course depending on the type of yarn you are using and the look you want your hood to have you might need to start with a smaller or larger number of chain stitches in the beginning. She is doing a worsted weight yarn and probably a size 5.5 mm hook and is making her hood rather snug. If you are wanting a bigger oversized droopy hood I would say chain up more or do more increasing rows. It all depends on the yarn, hook and look you are going for but this is a good starting point. However many stitches you wish to start out with you have to chain one extra in the beginning. She wanted 26 stitches for her first row so she told us to chain 25 and add 2 that is because we have to do a chain up of two for a half double crochet stitch so keep that in mind when making yours. I hope this helps. ☺️

I didn't know this was a movie "thing", I just want something to cover my head loosely and protect neck and shoulders from chill without being beastly hot. Could you advise how to adapt it to a much finer yarn. I would love to use fingering or sport weight alpaca for light soft warmth but don't know how to figure out adapting. Thanks!

This is such a cool hood, and I want to make it myself, but I'm kind of confused on some of the steps. When you got to row 14 you had two symmetrical sides with out making and attaching the two sides like a regular hood, and I don't understand how you did that. Could you please explain?

Im not the one who made the video but~ i had that issue as well on another project, are working on one side or doing a " U" shape. Basically to get the " U" shape she did you go over and around the original slipknot you made. And continue to work on the other side of the foundation chain. I hope i explained this in a way you can understand!

If you make more foundation chains.. so that it matches the back of your head down to your collar, it will fit... That continues through your whole project. Increase where she says, eye measurements, where she stoped... Follow her pattern but you'll end up with more rows than she has. Does that mean sense?

When you say the rows increase by two each time, do you count those two stitches? So would it go 27 for the first row, then 29 for the next row, then 31 and so on? I can't figure out where to put the increase stitch because after the first few rows, the 27th stitch is on the side instead of the top of the increase. I love this project and really want it to turn out correctly. Thanks for your help!

I see someone already asked this without getting a reply, but I'm confused about the steps too. How do you end up with an entire hood? I followed the steps but only ended up with one side of the hood. Did you make two and attach them? I looked at the written instructions, but they don't really explain anything about that.

+Michele Feeley Sorry for the confusion! After row 14 I tried on my hood and saw that I had enough stitches for the hood to fit nicely over the top of my head. After this row I still needed more rows so that my hood reached closer to my face. I continued working in rows back and forth as I did before, I just stopped increasing since I had enough stitches for the size I wanted. I hope that makes sense and I apologize that I missed this step in the tutorial.

Christiana Bruins Slot That sounds really pretty!!! You will still be able to make this pattern with your materials but you will have to do some adjusting - You will probably need to start with a different number of chains (since you are using a smaller hook) and you will have to crochet more rows. Hope this helps & let me know if you have any more questions

Hello, when you say, “the hood should be at the nap of the neck to the top of your head” ...does that mean literally mean the top of your head like at the middle of your head or to your forehead, because Im just starting mines and I put it at the nape of my neck and the top part of the hood stops at the middle of the top of my head. Is that how it starts out or do I need to start over and make my chain longer? Please reply, as I’m actually in the middle of my project and dont want to go any further until you respond back. I know you posted this a while ago and have probably figured it out since then. I know your comment was so long ago that you have likely figured it out but I'm also responding for any future viewers that might have the same concern. ☺️
