As a Chinese person- these things are driven by elders in rural areas- 3rd or 4th tier cities. Old folks can get away with these without a license, and police can't really do anything about the recklessness (The concept of throwing a 70+ yr old bloke into prison for operating a motor vehicle without a license doesn't quite work in my country, unfortunately.) (Edit: These were absolute piles of s**t when they were new. They are "like" cars in terms of styling and shape, but that's it. Slightly warmer than a bike was the whole point of these things. Some are still made today, but they are gradually getting banned in cities with higher population.)

You can do it man, just save save save. Hell, im 32 and just bought my first real vehicle. Spent about 3500 on it after saving for a little while, but I have made tons of sacrifices like basically never going out anywhere and just staying home and watching movies, playing games/guitar, or woodworking in my free time. Not having a car sucks, but it REALLY sucks as you get older. Especially if you dont live near any public transportation

I learned that the hard way when I was down on my luck, some idiot totaled my car, and I was stuck with a two-hour bus & train commute for nearly a year. I stood in the freezing rain at the bus stop one night staring at an absolute beater that was sitting at a red light. Just thinking “I bet it’s warm, dry, and safe in there.” Saved up enough to buy my own beater and loved it to death for years. Now, I’m a spirited enthusiast, so my cars are more than just A-B appliances to me. But when someone needs a car to get by, anything will do and they definitely appreciate it. There should be a lot more affordable and basic cars available for those people.

Imho I think that little red beater deserves a little more respect. It really ain't that bad if you were actually able to take it for a.spin. Someone obviously removed the door panels for unknown reasons, so when the thing was brand-new it must've been in much better shape. It's way underpowered compared to what we have in America but that doesn't mean it's useless in other parts of the world where regular people actually use them as commuter cars.

i'd drive this thing around all day here in germany. locked at 45kmh, this thing would be dirt cheap to maintain. The prototype 2CV (French Citroen, designed to be a simple car for rural use) had a 600 CC engine with a pull starter next to the steering wheel. The design specification was that "an elegantly dressed woman" should be able to start the car with "2 or 3" pulls. This was in the late 1930's, so not having an electric starter or battery would significantly reduce costs and maintenance.

While stationed in Okinawa I drove a 1970 Toyota Publica, 2 cylinder air cooled engine, front wheel drive. It WAS a tiny car but reasonable roomy for the front seat. Rear seat more suited for small children or packages. Standard transmission, floor shift. Listed as First, Second, Third and OT (or Out of Town), Gas mileage was terrific. Top speed was approx 40-45 but since the speed limit on the island was never above 50 it suited. Buddy of mine had a Subaru 360. 360 cc two cycle engine in the rear. For the location and usage they fit the bill. Would not mind having one here for just in town use, would be folly (suicide??) to try them on the highway.

Reminds me a bit of the Tata Nano. These vehicles are not designed for the US market. Throughout rural China, India, Indonesia, Thailand etc, it is common for the "Family car" to be a 90cc scooter. There are millions of families in that situation. Not uncommon to see mum, dad 2 kids and some luggage on a motorbike. This vehicle is a next step up from a motorbike.

Your "like a moped scooter" analogy is on point. In many parts of Europe, cars like this are (or were) available. They have limited registrations, and are not allowed on highways. They can be operated with a limited license and most of the ones I remember seeing were driven by older folks on limited incomes in rural areas. They aren't much, but it beats walking or riding a moped in bad weather.

I had to give that car at least one good run for him. He was a car and motorcycle guy. Also big time into guns. I got his little 2023 GR Corolla up to 150 MPH on the way back from his funeral. He never has maxed it out like that so I had to see what it could do. He liked going fast on back roads i only seen him hit 125MPH in it. I had to show him what it could do. He was so proud of that car. I really take pride in my work. He only trusted me touching his cars. I also did work on all his cars. But the GR Corolla was the fun car. Often used by elderly people as motorised shopping trolleys and, in France, can be driven from age 14. Given a wide berth by conventional drivers but very ecologically sound because in a collision they just leave a pile of carbon fibre which is simply swept up. 😂

You are speaking about "LIGIER" or other brand of "microcars" ... driven by a small diesel-engine. Indeed no speed above 45km/h ... but I know a lot of people that are very pleased with those vehicles. And YES ... they are quite expensive. Too expensive in my opinion.

I love the simplicity of it. People here have been spoiled by all the luxurious amenities in bigger modern overpriced American vehicles. Yes safety isn’t a big factor here but for a tiny thing to run around a small private community or property like a college campus/school, it does the job. Surely better than a golf cart. You have AC, radio and protected from the elements (rain or bugs). Yes the seals aren’t great but your other alternative is wide open. You can easily add rubber seals and better radio etc. it’s minimalist and simple to fix. Not all computerized. Spare parts at your local hardware store. Ha!

Just keep in mind, Geely owns Volvo Lotus Cars, UK Maserati And some other brands. You should see Geely crash tests. You're safer on a motorcycle. ETA: No, you cannot title it. It does not meet DOT and NHTSA safety standards. It will be 2044 before you can import it under the 25 year rule, and since it's already here, it cannot be legally imported as a road vehicle. You can totally drive it on private property and cross the road between two pieces of private property, but it is not street legal for safety, bumper height, emissions, and a ton of other reasons.

No, the rear logo implies GAC Group. The steering wheel logo looks like a cross between GAC Group and Foton (GAC Group has had many subsidiaries and manufactured vehicles for Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, etc.) Many of these subsidiaries have come and gone over the years; presumably this vehicle is obsolete or discontinued within the past few years. This type of car is for pensioners; they give away their nice car to the grandkids so they can have something decent for college/starting off their lives. This car minimizes expenses, lasts a few years. When the owner passes away, either someone in the family will take the car or give it away to another pensioner. The car doesn't need to last forever; just longer than the people owning it. Then it either gets chopped for parts or scrapped like a disposable product to make a new disposable cheap mini-car.

I remember falling into the chinese micro car rabbit hole about 5 years ago when I went to Roanoke, VA and spotted a small 4 door 3 wheel car which turned out to be a "Wildfire WF-650", a SD650ZK that was imported to America and rebadged after it arrived in a small dealership in Ohio. This company also sold a taller 4 door, a pickup, a pickup with dump bed, as well as mopeds and small electric cars before moving on to sell small houses on trailers. The engine parts were surprisingly easy to find since a company called Joyner also sold buggies with the same 650cc engine which is also readily available to this day (if you're willing to spend 1.4k on a full drivetrain) The cars are so poorly made, but they seem fun to mess with when they're new. They're so barebones, it's probably a fun way to start working on small engines and even electronics since the fuse boxes are easily accessible.
